1 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION The Greene Leaflet News for Greene County Master Gardeners Greene County Extension June 2018 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE President s Message Page 1 Calendar..Page 2 Continuing Ed Page 2 Announcements Page 3 Did You Know?...Page 3 Scholarship Winner Page 4 Contact Info...Page 6 Whatsoever whether great or small, ugly or handsome, sweet or stinking, everything in the universe in their own nature appears beautiful to me. - John Bartram, ( ) I hope everyone is enjoying the wet and warm weather lately. Many of our plants are growing fast and looking beautiful. Mr. Sun is our friend but as Brenda-Sandman-Stover presented in the training session after the last meeting, we need to respect Mr. Sun and protect ourselves from his harmful rays. She showed many ugly examples of skin cancer that can result from overexposure. So, if the sun s up, cover up. Use that sunscreen, wear light clothing and sunglasses, and cover your ears with a hat. Go to your dermatologist to get checked if you see something suspicious. Enjoy the sun with caution. I recently found an article from AARP ( that expounds on why I and probably you enjoy gardening. Granted this article is geared for us older folks but offers good insight. The title is 5 Secret Health Benefits of Gardening, Working in Dirt (soil) Boosts Mood, Lowers Dementia Risk. The five health benefits subparagraphs are: Helps Combat Loneliness; Enjoyable Aerobic Exercise; Exposure to Vitamin D; Mood-Boosting Benefits; and Decreased Dementia Risk. Let me summarize some of these benefits. We all enjoy the socialization and engaging with friends. Pulling weeds, reaching for tools, twisting and bending as you plant or harvest works muscles we forgot we had and helps with strength, stamina, and flexibility. Exposure to sunlight helps achieve an adequate vitamin D level, which increases your calcium level. Gardening reduces stress by lowering the stress hormone cortisol as found in a study in the Netherlands. A research study of 2,800 people over the age of 60 for 16 years concluded that physical activity, particularly gardening, could reduce the incidence of dementia in future years. I m not a medical professional by any means, but gardening offers a variety of health benefits in addition to providing nutritious veggies and fruits for your dinner table and beautiful flowers to decorate it. Enjoy and happy gardening! The Greene Leaflet 1 Greene County Master Gardeners

3 Did you Know.. That John Bartram ( ) is considered the father of American Botany? In fact, George III paid Bartram 50 pounds per year as the King s Botanist for North America. His intense interest in Native American flora lead him on many quests to collect Native plant species. He propagated his collection on his eight acre Pennsylvanian farm. Bartram s botanical hobby soon leads to a thriving business. Bartram was instrumental in sending seeds and live plants to Europe, a growing market for American native plants. His seeds and plants went to the royal collection at Kew Gardens. Bartram sent magnolias, mountain laurels, azaleas, and rhododendrons to Europe through London agent, Peter Collinson. Bartram invented special boxes Bartram Boxes - in which he packed seeds and live plants in moss or sand. The boxes measured 3x2.5 feet and were designed to survive a sea voyage. Bartram is also credited with publishing the first seed and plant catalogue (1783). Some of his most notable customers include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin with whom he co-founded the American Philosophical Society in Jefferson especially relied on Bartram to fill Monticello with trees and shrubs. Bartram s family garden eventually grew to a 102-acre botanical garden considered the first botanical garden in the United States. Bartram propagated over 4,000 native and exotic plants, and by 1830 there were 10 greenhouses on the property. In 1850, the property was sold to Andrew Eastwick, who hoped to preserve the gardens, but the gardens became neglected upon Eatwick s death in Eastwick s former gardener and a member of the Philadelphia City Council, Thomas Meehan, successfully added the garden to the city s park system in The Bartram home became a National Historic Landmark in ANNOUNCEMENTS The Owen s Place Garden Group is hosting the June 12 business meeting. This is a carry-in meeting, so please bring a dish to share. Bring your own chair and drink. Water will be provided. We will meet in the gazebo in front of Owen s Place (Rotary Park in Beavercreek). A tour of the garden will follow the meal. Please direct questions to Janette Brawn at twinbraun@gmail.com The GCMG organization is a tax-exempt organization. Please use the tax-exempt form found on the VMS (click on Newsletters and Documents and then MG forms and documents. It s the last one on the list.)
