10 Chickney Currently no wells or handpumps have been reported or found by the Author to date. The following pumps are recorded in Whitaker, W & Thresh, J (1916) Memoirs of the Geological Society England and Wales. The Water Supply of Essex from underground sources, Great Britain, Jas Truscott & Son These Wells and pumps are still to be confirmed to the Author, they come from records made in 1916, so it might be that they no longer exist. Many though are on private property and the Author would welcome confirmation of their existence and to record them. CHICKN01: Station House, Sibleys, Chickney Well date unknown- visible but dis-used in 1965 CHICKN02: Chickney Hall, Chickney Works to well noted done by J R Brown & Co, Ipswich 1935, in-use and had electric pump in 1965
11 Chesterfords (Great & Little) Great Chesterford: According to the report of the medical officer (W. Armstead) for 1912, there are many private Wells. Most in the village are dug into chalk or into gravel, but some are bored, one at Crown house to 220ft, one at the Brewery to 200ft and two others at the same. There is no public supply and the private Wells mostly vary form 10-60ft. Little Chesterford: According to the Dr Thresh s report of 1905, p.61, there are no public works. But several private Wells, mostly in chalk. Pump/Well. The excavation lies within the area of a possible second enclosure to the s-e of the walled town. 5 phases of activity were identified: 1. 2nd C or earlier-an industrial or agricultural use; 2. Mid-late 2nd C-first indication of occupation in the form of gravel surfaces, boundary ditches, a well and possible structural remains; 3. Late 2nd C-mid 3rd C-levelling and sealing of Phase 2 features; 4. Late 3rd-4th C- construction of a timber-framed building (Building I); 5. Later 4th C- replacement of Building I with one of masonry footings (Building II). One is at the new Well 1912, Sheepcote Green, about 370ft above Ordnance datum, water level at about 244ft, shaft 135ft, bored 20ft. One is in the middle street supplied by a spring. One on stickling green is supplied by a well in boulder clay then gravel. There are now (1913) five public wells, three getting their water from springs in the gravel. Pump/Well.
