Can you think of a better way to spend a summer Saturday than touring beautiful water features? This year s tour covers the Southwest part of the Metro area around Southwest Denver (including Centennial and Englewood), Lakewood, and Littleton. Twelve different ponds and various water features will be included in this year s tour. We are combining our Tour with the Koi Club s Pond Tour, so several features will show-case beautiful Koi ponds. Descriptions of the Pond Tour sites, a take along area map, and suggested route are included with this Newsletter. Eight of the ponds are in relatively close proximity and three are a bit further out. The suggested route starts with the Eastern most pond, works its way Northwest, then South, and ends at the final destination, Hudson Gardens, where the Picnic will take place. There is no admission fee to enter Hudson Gardens. Please park in the South parking lot and enter the gate to the South of the Gift Shop and proceed to the Welcome Garden. The Picnic starts at 4:00 pm. Online at: The tour will operate from 10:00 am through 3:30 pm and is self-guided. The tour is free to all CWGS members and their guests. (continued on page 3)

3 Feature Articles 3 CWGS 2013 Pond Tour & Picnic (continued from front page) Along with the provided insert, you will need a good Denver Metro area map and/or a GPS. The tour covers a lot of area and contains numerous cul-de-sac neighborhoods where streets are discontinuous and meandering. The map should help you orient where each pond is in relation to the next, but since it is in relatively small scale, it cannot show detail. To assist with this, a written itineray is included with the map with keyed directions associated with the insert map. You ll also want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Please remember, only the ponds and gardens are open, the houses and restroom facilities are not. If you need a bathroom break, take time to stop along the way. It will not be necessary to bring a chair this year, Hudson Gardens will have plenty of seating available. We will provide the main dish (fried chicken and ribs), side dishes, drinks, and dessert all for only $4 per plate for adults, children under 12 are free. Your plate charge also buys you a ticket for door prizes, which will include a range of aquatic plants and maybe a few other items. Larry & Kim Hutchinson 6363 E. Dorado Circle, Centennial Our pond is a formal, rectangular, raised Koi pond designed for ease of covering it with a polycarbonate greenhouse roof for Winter heating. It was designed as a centerpiece for formal patio entertaining. It s primary focus is Koi. Our feature also contains a stairstep stainless steel waterfall and the lower waterfall acts as a skimmer. Our pond is approximately 12 by 20 and contains about 6,500 gallons. Park on the street or upper driveway and enter on the East side (to the right) near the garage. 2. Chuck & Jean Mitton 3961 S. Birch Street, Englewood Our ponds begin at the top garden-level of our yard with a formal water feature displaying a favorite bronze sculpture that is a fountain. Water falls from that feature down to a middle-level pond of about 700 gallons and from there, down a larger waterfall to the main 5,000 gallon pond featuring Koi (many were born in our pond) and various water plants. Between the main lower-level pond, the middle-level pond, and the upper-level water feature, we have approximately 6,000 gallons. The main pond is about 20 in diameter and 4 5 deep. Columbine Design designed and built the pond in Many modifications in filtration have been made along the way. Park along the street and enter through the gate at the North end of the property at the end of the driveway. 3. Mark Bussinger/Jennifer Trueblood 1630 S. Wyandot Street, Denver Our pond is approximately 7,000 gallons. There are multiple waterfalls and streams that are heavily planted to act as natural filtration. The pond structure consists of 3 tiers with an area for plants on the back level. The main pond is full of iris and has a large crabapple tree as a backdrop. The deck and paths around the pond are on 3 different levels for different viewing points. We have many Koi ranging in size from 4 to 24. Our filtration system is a homemade gravity flow system and keeps the pond algae-free and very clean. The pond was constructed in 1996 by Mark. The larger pond is 1,200 gallons and was designed and built by us in It contains Koi and three overflowing pots. We added a smaller 500 gallon pond in We typically use this pond for our tropical water lilies. We hope you enjoy our ponds as much as we do. Park along the street and enter through the South (left) gate. 5. Gary & Joyce Blubaugh 3064 S. Holland Court, Lakewood Our pond was built in 2003 by BR&D Landscaping. Our biofalls empties into a small pool where two streams branch into a 4,200 gallon pond. Our pond is home to 12 adult Koi and countless babies, as well as a pair of Mallard ducks. We have an assortment of hardy water lilies and two tropical water lilies that span the length of the pond. Enter the backyard via the gate on the South side (to the right of the garage). 6. Rich & Katy Haas W. Rice Place, Morrison Inspired by Utah s Canyonlands, Katy designed the waterfall, stream, and pond to resemble the serene atmosphere of the red rocks wilderness. The various water features are approximately 1,200 gallons and traverse a deck and open area. There are many large goldfish, frogs, and plants including water lilies, marginal plants, bog plants, and lotus. In 2005 we designed and built the initial waterfall, stream, and 950 gallon pond. In 2011, we added to the larger pond and we also added bog areas. In 2012 we added two manufactured ponds of 50 gallons each. Please enjoy the various water features, the lilies, and lotus. Park on Rice Place or Union Street and enter through the East (left side) gate near the driveway. 7. Mike & Bonnie Collins 3942 S. Chase Way, Denver We bought the house in 2011 during the Winter with a foot of snow on the ground. Once the snow melted, we discovered we had a concrete lined pond. The concrete was cracked and rendered the pond useless. AOK Plumbing & Heating bid on the reconstruction of our pond. It took the entire Spring of 2011 to remove the concrete and rebuild the rock face of the stream and waterfall. The pond now has a heavy plastic liner that should last awhile. Our pond is about 3,000 gallons and is about 4 deep near the waterfall with a cave-like area for the goldfish to overwinter. The stream and waterfall are fed by one pump. Our pond has many hardy water lilies and marginal plants. Please park in one of the two parking areas behind the brick colums on either side of the driveway. If those spaces are not available, park on the street. Go up the steps leading to the octogon, petunia filled area, continue to the gate (on the right) nearest the wood fence, into the backyard, and stop at the rose garden on the hill with the fountain in the center. Go down the stepping stones to the flagstone patio to view the pond. When finished, please exit throught the backyard, past the putting green, and back out to the driveway. 8. Lois & Bob Mayerchak, 4905 Bow Mar Drive, Littleton When we first bought our house in 1976, there was a small concrete pond with serious cracks and leaks. Several years after Bob and I joined the Colorado Water Garden Society, we designed and built a new lily pond. John and Mary Mirgon provided excellent advice for placement of the liner. We installed a bio-filter behind the waterfall. The pond is approximately 18 x 23 and was built strictly for water lilies. The pond is 24 deep with a 12 deep shelf halfway around the pond for dwarf water lilies and iris. It holds approximately 5,600 gallons of water. Park in the driveway (if there s room) or park along the street in front of the house. Enter through the gate on the South (left) side of the house. 9. Bob & Fran Hoffman, 5110 S. Estes Street, Littleton We built a series of ponds that total about 3,000 gallons. We have two smaller water gardens with a waterfall between them, as well as a larger water garden. There is also a Koi pond connected to the water garden via a small stream. We maintain these ponds with 3 filters, a skimmer box, a 50 gallon barrel filter, and a bead filter. In the water garden, we have lotus, hardy and tropical water lilies, and numerous marginal plants, as well as about 15 Koi. An added bonus is our garden railroad. Since this is a cul-du-sac neighborhood, parking can be challenging, so please use the driveway or wherever you can find a spot. Enter the backyard on the East (right) side of the garage. 10. John & Pam Witt, 5478 S. Garrison Street, Littleton Our pond is approximately 300 gallons. It flows between our aspen trees on a hill in our backyard. We have had many comments from people about how natural the pond looks. I designed the pond myself in 1992 and it was refurbished in 2007 by Autumn Leaf Designs. Although our pond is small, its looks and sounds are very soothing and add a relaxing touch to our backyard and patio. Park on the street in front of the house and enter the yard through the gate located to the South (right) of the garage. (continued on page 5)

5 Feature Articles 5 CWGS 2013 Pond Tour & Picnic (continued from page 3) 11. Reflections Community Water Gardens, Littleton Located on both sides of S. Kline Street/W. Ida Avenue through to S. Lewis Street, the various ponds meander through the Reflections Community/Subdivision. They were created as part of the subdivision s drainage system. The ponds, constructed with plastic liners, were designed to capture and mitigate excess stormwater from the subdivision. The ponds contain hardy water lilies, water iris, sedge, and cattails. They re also home to numerous wildlife including blackbirds, frogs, crayfish, herons, mallards, and geese. Most of the ponds are located along the street, so park along the street and walk to the various ponds. 12. Larry & Laura Lunsford W. Parkhill Drive, Littleton Our contemporary-design Koi pond was built in It is 11,500 gallons and is home to 17 adult Koi and numerous babies. We also have a smaller water garden pond with water lilies and a variety of marginal plants. We built the ponds ourselves with the Koi pond design focused on viewability and predator control. The fused glass design accents were designed and made by Larry to provide some bling to the waterfalls. The Koi pond is adjacent to our Sunroom. The deck outside the Sunroom has an overhang, which provides excellent Koi viewing and also a shelter for the Koi. Park on the street anywhere near the house and enter the backyard through the gate on the West (right) side of the house, next to the garage. 13. Hudson Gardens S. Sante Fe Drive, Littleton Enter Hudson Gardens via the main entrance and park in the South lot. Proceed to the Welcome Garden via the gate South of the Gift Shop. Tours of Hudson Gardens will be provided by Bob Hoffman, President of the Colorado Water Garden Society. Joe & Carla Mascarenas Pond, (photo courtesy of Dorothy Martinez) Leaf Casting Class/Seminar by Theresa Rounds & Dorothy Martinez The Colorado Water Garden Society will be hosting a Leaf Casting Class/Seminar on two consecutive Saturdays during August. What is leaf casting? This art form is where you make an impression of an actual living leaf in a permanent media such as concrete. The concrete leaves are a fun way to add sculpture to your garden or house. The leaf impressions will be made out of a portland cement mixture. The leaf casts need about a week to dry and cure before they are revealed. The casts can be painted with acrylic paint after they cure. After curing, the casts are sealed with a concrete sealer, allowing the cast to be placed outside in the garden or inside your house. Lois & Bob Mayerchak s Pond, (photo courtesy of Dorothy Martinez) The first class, to be held on Saturday, August 17 th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, will be when we make a cast of a leaf. The second second class, to be held on Saturday, August 24 th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, will be when the casts are revealed by peeling the leaf back and cleaning the cast. The group can decide if they want to gather for a third session to paint the leaves together. Space for this class/seminar is limited to a maximum of 15 people. If you are interested in participating, please contact Dorothy Martinez at as soon as possible. The fee to cover the instructor s (Theresa Rounds) time and the cost for materials will be $60 per person. The class fee will be due no later than Friday, August 9 th. To see an example of one of Theresa s leaf casts, please see Page 5 of the August 2012 Newsletter. CWGS 2013 Plant Sale Wrap-up by Vicki Aber Another Plant Sale has come and gone. In Colorado, the weather can be very strange. This year, strange took the form of late Winter snows. This made for a late start for ponds. We had fewer donated plants, especially marginals, and I feel that was why. On the upside, the pond sale occurred when everyone was finally ready to get going, resulting in brisk sales. The plants I bought at the sale seem to be thriving. I would like to put in a plug for some of the sad looking plants. Some of the plants we order come from Florida and going from 90% humidity to 10% overnight makes the plants wilt. They crinkle up and look really bad on the day of the sale, but soon adjust and end up doing well. Many of these revived plants end up being door prizes at our Pond Tour Picnic. The sale couldn t take place without a lot of hard work and planning. The Plant Sale Committee starts meeting early in the year to decide what plants to order and discuss logistics. This year, on the day of set up, many hands helped us get done in record time. All the people who helped the day of the sale made sure people found what they were looking for and made sure people bought plants they would be successful with. We have such a great knowledge base in this club, it is great to have the opportunity to share it. Some people were there for every stage, others volunteered a few hours, and some only shopped. We appreciate everyone who helped and attended the Sale! The Sale would never take place, let alone be so successful, without each and every person who takes part. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. It s an ideal time to enjoy lilies in bloom and to pick up tips about their propagation. It s also a good time especially this year to learn about the history of the Club. Save the date of Saturday, August 10 th to join CWGS members and the public as we celebrate the Water Blossom Festival at Denver Botanic Gardens. The Festival will run pond-side at the Monet Garden pool from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Docent-guided tours of the Gardens many water features, including the 2013 IWGS New Waterlily Competition, will operate out of the Festival tents. We ll also have demonstrations, lots of information, and a history table where you can learn a bit about the founding of CWGS 30 years ago and the club s ongoing ties with Denver Botanic Gardens. Joe Tomocik, the Curator of DBG s water gardens for many years, will have lots of stories to share about the early years. At 1:00 pm in the DBG Plant Society Building, CWGS member Joe Mascarenas will share his insights on photographing lilies, lotus, and other aquatic plants. Perhaps we ll receive some updates from the current DBG water garden horticulturist Tamara Kilbane, and we ll enjoy some refreshments. Look in next month s issue of The Water Garden for more detail on the Water Blossom Festival and the celebration of the Club s 30 th anniversary. You will need a detailed city map or GPS to determine your route because roads are discontinuous and there are multiple, alternative (and often circuitous) routes.
