OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Flora and Fauna The Mahoning County ANR Volunteer Newsletter Ohio State University Extension Mahoning County 490 South Broad Street Canfield, Ohio June 2016 Volume 15 Issue 6 Marilyn s Musings I wish! I m busy! I know you are too. Here s the Essential Summer Garden Checklist. Grow what you love Play in the dirt Nap in the shade Laugh at yourself Eat the best berries Listen to the birds Watch the fireflies & the stars Marilyn McKinley OSUE MGV and OCVN June MGV Meeting Our next MGV meeting will feature a trip to Kridler Gardens in Homeworth. Kridler Gardens is a 40-acre botanical garden and home to a garden center specializing in rare perennials, trees, and shrubs. They also specialize in hosta with an inventory of over 100 cultivars. The entire property covers over 100 acres of native woodlands, walking paths and landscaped grounds. Owner Barrie Kridler will give a presentation on New and Unusual Plants. Those interested in carpooling should meet at the OSU Extension office no later than 5:45 pm. Directions from the Canfield Extension office can be found attached to this newsletter. July MGV Meeting Our July flower event will be a fun flower show with people's choice judging. We'll see what we've learned after Hugh s presentation and the articles I've included in our newsletter. I wanted this to be a less formal flower show, where we can have a good time while learning some of the basics of showmanship. Hope I'm not offending anyone who enters competition events. Your entry will be given a number so it will be a blind judging. You'll fill out an index card with your plant information. Everyone will be able to vote for their favorites by putting a chip into a bag located in front of entries. There will only be four classes: 1. cut foliage 2. cut flower- annual 3. cut flower- perennial 4. houseplants

I'll talk about it at our meeting in June. I'll put scheduling information in the July newsletter for bringing your entries to the extension office. Thanks to Hugh for his presentation and to Mary June Emerson for her suggestions and help. Hope to see you at Kridler Gardens! Pam Baytos OSUE MGV July OCVN Meeting The July 20 meeting of the OCVN will be a field trip to tour Quail Hollow State Park in Hartville, Ohio. We will meet at 6:00 pm at the Quail Hollow parking lot near the house. Volunteer guides will give us a tour of the house and herb garden. The original rock garden is being renovated, but will also be on the tour. We will then explore one of the trails in the park either on our own or with a guide from Stark Parks who have taken over management and programming in the park from the state in January. All Master Gardeners are invited to join us for this crossover field trip. We will arrange carpooling from the Extension Office closer to the meeting date. Those who work can come later and join us in progress. You may miss the house tour, but the garden tour and hiking will be available. RSVP in July so we can give an estimate to our volunteer guides for planning purposes. Sheila Cubick OSUE OCVN and MGV May MGV Meeting The May MGV meeting was our annual member plant exchange and covered dish dinner. The meeting featured the introduction of several of our new MGV interns. MGV Class of 2016 In Their Own Words Henrietta Lewis I was born and raised in Seabrook, South Carolina. Seabrook is a rural area in the county of Beaufort, South Carolina. I graduated from Beaufort High School. My family lived with my grandfather on a 50- acre small farm, which he farmed with his brother. We later moved to our new house when I was 10 years old. They grew cotton, tobacco, and corn as the cash crops, and vegetables for the house. He had 2 cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, and turkeys for food. Growing up in the Gullah community, we ate from the land and rivers, mostly seafood. I met and married my husband in South Carolina. We moved to Youngstown in I planted my first garden in It was my first and last experience with a rototiller. I planted cucumber, peppers, tomatoes, and radishes. The only thing that grew that summer was the radishes. I planted the entire seed package, and they grew abundantly. I could not give them away. The next year I planted tomato plants on the east side of my house. The plants produced tomatoes until it snowed. I have always planted flowers in my yard. Roses, hostas, and daylilies grew many in my yard. YNDC started a community garden in Youngstown about five years ago. Their workers came around recruiting for the garden, and I signed up for one plot. They gave the seeds, plants, guidance, water, and

tools to work the garden. YNDC turned the garden over to the two remaining people in the garden, my friend, and me. We have many problems in the garden, insects, pests, and people. I met Eric at a YNDC class and he introduced me to the OSU Extension office. I intend to make many changes in my garden. Henrietta Lewis MGV Intern MGV Class of 2016 In Their Own Words Susan McMann My name is Susan McMann and I grew up in Austintown, Ohio! I have lived in Mahoning County all of my life. Currently, I live in Boardman. My grandmother, Florence Barron, was the person who first introduced me to gardening. My grandmother, who was an avid rose gardener, encouraged me to enter a rose into a competition and I won a second prize ribbon! I must have been hooked from that point on! I think I was about seven or eight at that time. That rose show was held at Fellows Riverside Gardens, in a small house that used to be on the grounds where the current building now sits. I have loved Fellows Gardens ever since. Presently, I enjoy growing dahlias, roses, herbs- in containers, zinnias-from seeds, wave petunias and other annuals in baskets, peonies, houseplants, and vegetable gardens. My favorite plants include dahlias, blackeyed Susans, roses, and peonies. In reality, I enjoy the beauty of most all garden plants, shrubs, and trees. Starting last year, I have experienced problems growing tomatoes. 2015, was the first year that my husband and I grew vegetables in many years. The tomatoes we grew had the End blossom rot. This year I have been researching ways to correct this problem. I have discovered from the MGV classes that the black spots on our tomatoes could be from a fungus, calcium/lime deficiency, and/or other problems. I have learned many techniques through the MGV classes to hopefully correct the problem. Some interventions I have learned include, having the soil tested to find what is deficient, add amendments to correct the deficiencies, put newspapers downcovering the soil to help stop fungi from splashing up onto the tomato fruit, etc. I found out about the MGV classes through a notice in the Vindicator. I faithfully, read the articles the MGV s submit for publication each Thursday. I was/am very excited to be offered a MGV position. I enjoy learning new gardening techniques and teaching others what I know. Susan McMann MGV Intern Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless. Volunteer Voice Thresea Harris Notice: 2016 Recognition Banquet The 2016 ANR Volunteer Recognition Banquet will be held on Wednesday, November 30 th at A La Cart Catering (429 Lisbon Street, Canfield). We will begin promptly at 6:00 pm. Banquet details will be forthcoming. Notice: MGV & OCVN INTERNS The newbies are jumping right in and accumulating hours. To the INTERNS: Thanks for your enthusiasm, your willingness to just dig in and go to work

volunteering! Lots of opportunities to get hours are coming up over the next few months stay tuned. Volunteer Voice Pam Baytos Tips for our July 14-1st. Annual Master Gardener Flower Show: Preparing Cut Flowers, Foliage and Houseplants for Show Select the best: if you can see something wrong, the judge will see it also. Harvest with care: Plan to cut your flowers in the evening or early morning. Always cut the stem several inches longer than necessary to allow for later trimming. Use a clean, sharp knife to make a smooth even cut. Scissors tend to pinch the ends of the stems and close off the water-conducting vessels. Plan to recut the stems just prior to exhibiting. A new clean cut opens up vessels for water uptake. Fresh cuts on woody stems, such as roses, should be made under water so that air does not fill the exposed vessels and block water uptake. Floral preservatives can be added to the water to extend the vase life of cut flowers. Groom for the show: Remove all soil and spray residue from the foliage, stems, and flowers. Faded blooms, petals and ragged leaves can be removed but lower ratings may result if there is visible evidence of groomingsuch as stubs or wounds. Pack carefully: Put individual flowers in soft drink or other narrow-necked bottles that are partially filled with water and placed in cardboard soft drink cartons or surrounded with newspapers inside a box. Label correctly: Correct and complete labeling helps make your exhibit a teaching tool for others. most guidelines ask for both plant name and cultivar, for example: Dahlia, "Lilac Time". Houseplants: All potted plants should be free of insects and diseases. Foliage plants are judged on the quality and appearance of leaves and stems. Colors should be bright, clear, and typical of the cultivar. Flowering plants are judged for their display of flowers but should not show obvious foliage damage. Should label with both common and scientific names; for example heartleaf philodendron, Philodendron cordatum. Remember that different shows may use different rules. Always review the rules before you prepare your entry. Pam Baytos OSUE MGV Volunteer Voice Marilyn McKinley Growing Giant Sunflowers I planted Mammoth sunflowers last year and got one that measured 13 2, would love to top that this year. From Renee s Garden: Tom Horton, world s foremost sunflower breeder for 30 years had a sunflower that grew 17 feet tall with a seed head of 24 inches! Wow! He has developed a variety of colors from burgundy and ruby red to orange, peach, apricot, and bright yellow the giants remain traditional yellow with brown centers. Site and soil preparation are critical. Full sun, direct 6-8 hours per day, the more the better. Choose a well-drained location, prep the soil by digging an area 2-3 feet around and 2 feet deep. Really!?? Sunflowers are heavy feeders and deplete the soil. Work in a slow release fertilizer (with trace minerals), sow directly, rather than starting in pots. Spacing should be 20 inches to get large heads. Planting closer may get tall stalks with small flower heads. To sow. Water soil, press seeds in one

inch in clumps of 5-6 seeds about 6-8 inches apart. You might want to use some snail bait. Cover lightly with soil, maybe bird netting too. Keep moist, seedlings should appear in 5-10 days. When 3 inches tall thin to most vigorous 3 or 4 plants. At one foot tall thin to 2 until they reach 2 feet, then pluck the weakling out. This method ensures you should get at least on strong plant. Feed me! Feed & water often. While plant is small water around the root zone 3-4 inches with 2 gallons of diluted fertilizer per week. When plants get larger scoop out a doughnut shaped moat 18 inches around and 4 inches deep. Pour several gallons of diluted fertilizer into the moat every week. Roots and grow 4 feet below the soil surface. To avoid rots from rotting do not pour water or fertilizer on the stem. Now I admit, this is more trouble than I went to get a 13 2 sunflower, maybe I ll settle for this year! Marilyn McKinley OSUE MGV and OCVN Volunteer Voice Marilyn McKinley Smallage I am into herbs but have never heard of this one until recently. Smallage is a wild variety of celery. Its leaves and flowers resemble parsley and Queen Anne s lace. It s very leafy, with a thin hollow stalk, grows up to 3 feet. The stalks are slender and pliable. It s a biennial, grows the first year, blooms and seeds the next year, and then dies. The stalks do not make for good eating, but the leaves are said to be very tasty in salads, soups, and sauces, good on eggs, in potato salad, and on peanut butter sandwiches! The celery seeds we purchase in the grocery store are likely smallage seeds. Now about another celery like plantlovage. I have too much! It grows to at least 5 ft., I use it like celery. Want some?
