We re all probably ankle-deep in mud catching up on yardwork but don t forget this is prime orchid blooming season for many species. My greenhouse is full of multiple color varieties of two of my favorite cattleya species: mossiae and (Laelia) purpurata. If this newsletter deadline hadn t snuck up on me I would have included pictures, but they will be at the next meeting show table. I want to encourage everyone, both new members and longtime green thumbs, to bring plants to our meetings. Don t be intimidated if you only have a few plants or haven t been growing for very long. We have three entry classes for the meeting show table: Novice: Under 3 yrs growing experience Intermediate: 4-10 yrs exp Experienced: over 10 yrs Plants can be huge specimens or first-time bloomers doesn t matter as long as it s an orchid Membership Roster Attached to this newsletter is the updated roster. 2 April Meeting Report April s meeting was a very well-attended repotting seminar. After brief introductory lectures on different aspects of orchid repotting Wayne Roberts, Edger Stehli, Dr. Bill Schumann, and Dave Miller each manned a repotting station that focused on different species. The club provided pots and media for members to have an orchid repotted and questions answered. This was a great opportunity to pick the brains of the orchid experts. 3 May Meeting Our next meeting will be Monday, May 16, at the South Euclid Community Center at 1370 Victory Drive, South Euclid Doors open at 6 pm for show table set up and conversation. Edgar Stehli s Beginner s Corner will begin at 6:40 pm and the main meeting at 7 pm. Edgar will do a follow up on last month s orchid repotting, and if extra time will talk about taking your plants outside for the summer. This month s speaker is American Orchid Society judge and Greater Akron Orchid Society president Dave Miller presenting A to Z Orchids: an alphabet of easy to grow orchid choices for building an orchid collection. We will also be holding an election for Vice President. After 6 ½ years as president Tom Peckis is taking a well-deserved break. Thank you Tom for your hard work and dedication to the club. We ll miss you as an officer but expect to still see you at meetings Current Vice President Cas McBride will be stepping up to the position of President, leaving the office of VP vacant. Nominations were taken at the last meeting and will be again accepted prior to voting this month. So far Allan Lund has been nominated. GCOS Meeting Calendar Meetings are held on the third Monday of the month unless otherwise noted. Speakers & projects are subject to change. June: Guided tour of Edgar Stehli s greenhouse July: Society Picnic and Plant Auction. Location: The West Woods (part of the Geauga Park system) 9465 Kinsman Road (State Rt 87) in Novelty. Note that date is Sunday July 17 th. August: Summer break, no meeting September: Dr. Bill Schumann: Moving compots to separate pots. Come early for the best selection! Taylor Orchids 3022 Bluebush Monroe, MI My wife Cinda and I spent the month of March, 2016 in Sanibel, FL. Sanibel is a small island on the gulf side near Fort Myers, about 50 miles north of the everglades. During our stay we visited three botanical gardens and two orchid growers. Here is a summary of our visits. sign of them there. Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens in Coral Gables (near Miami) is the home of the American Orchid Society. They offer free admission to members of the Cleveland Botanical Garden. They have 83 acres of land with lakes, alligators, and spoonbills, and several glasshouses for subtropical plants and butterflies. They had an orchid show with over 30 spectacular club displays like the one at the left. There were also over 30 vendors in tents outside. Fairchild s orchid display was entirely outdoors scattered throughout their rainforest area. AOS has a beautiful new library in an old tearoom at Fairchild, but that is the only Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota also offers free admission to CBG members. Their spring orchid show was inside their one public glasshouse, and I have never seen so many beautiful and unusual species in one place. The gardens cover about 12 acres with spectacular views of Sarasota Bay all around. The children s 5

6 garden features tree houses and catwalks throughout a gigantic Ficus tree. The Naples Botanical Garden is about an hour south of Sanibel. It is relatively young and wealthy garden, but no one gets in free. They have 8 or 10 theme gardens scattered over 170 acres of land. All of their orchids are outdoors in a courtyard that just opened last year (left.) When we visited there was a flower show going on with a huge room full of unusual floral displays. Several orchid and bromeliad dealers were with the vendors in a large tent outside. Marilyn s Exotic Orchids in Ft. Myers is a medium-sized orchid grower just across the causeway from Sanibel. They have a small greenhouse for sales and a larger one for stock. This is Cinda in the sales area. They had huge Vandas hanging from the ceiling that looked like they d been there for 20 years, and a pile of big Cat-like divisions labeled GOK orchids God Only Knows - $5. The owner said that people come in all the time and want something to hang in a tree, so he sells them some GOK orchids. Sundance Orchids and Bromeliads is near the Fort Myers Regional Southwest Airport. They have a couple of acres of bromeliads under glass. Bromeliads seemed to be planted in every yard in Sanibel. They have a large greenhouse for orchid sales and stock, and two areas for Vandas (left.) I assumed that that the Vandas were under glass until the rain started and I discovered that they were under screens. I brought five new plants home from Florida two Cats, a Brassavola, a Dendrobium, and a Ludisia. I wished I had more room in my car. 6
