3 WVGC President Carolyn S McCafferty Yesterday, I began to decorate my house for fall. What a wonderful time of the year!! The colors of red, yellow, and orange, are just so pretty! I love it! It's like my house has sat dormant over the summer months, no special decorations, just the same old stuff. But then as fall comes, I bring out the beautiful colors of fall, followed by the reds and greens of Christmas! And...Wow! I love the change I bring out in my home!--and sometimes, I just sit and admire it! As you get out and about in your neighborhood or take a walk or hike, do you ever consider that trees do not cling to their leaves? They let them go, freely. As if fall is releasing the old to make way for the new. The spectacular colors I will see as I travel around our state, reminds me why I love West Virginia. As summer has made a time for us in garden club, to relax--although we do a lot of planting, weeding and watering over the summer, we usually don't have as many meetings or planning times. But as fall comes, like the trees, we are ready for a new season and fresh new ideas! Have you taken pictures at your activities to apply for an award? Every club in West Virginia, does something that is "award winning." I bet your yearbook could win an award! But you can't win, if you don't apply!! The deadline is November 15th and the application is in this issue--you have no excuses! I have offered 4 Presidential Awards...They all have pretty easy rules--did you plant a pot of flowers?--then you could apply for the Container Award. Did you have children or youth work with you this summer?--then you could apply for the Youth Award. Did you attend Landscape Design School?--then you could apply for the Education Award. Do you have junk?--we all have junk...then incorporate it into your garden or a container.--and you can apply for the Recycle Award. Please read over all the award descriptions...find some that work for your club. I attended National Garden Club's Convention in May, and West Virginia did not win any awards--how embarrassing for us Let's not let that happen again! Wouldn't it be great, if every club won an award? Let's pull up our sleeves and get to work! Send in those award applications!! I am anxiously preparing for my travel this fall. The anticipation of your Fall District Meetings is sometimes overwhelming. I had such a wonderful time last fall. I enjoyed every minute! And now as the time approaches, I have prepared my speech, packed my suitcase, got the GPS ready, and now...let's go, Lea Ann! I look forward to seeing all of you very soon! 4 New Cumberland Garden Club Interesting Garden Clubs On June 9th, the 83rd Blue Star Marker was dedicated in New Cumberland, West Virginia. Mountaineer Garden Club: The TVEMS 4th grade students of Christine Poling Ward invited the Mountaineer Garden Club to assist in planting a variety of perennials in their Butterfly Garden. On Wednesday the 30 th of May, Members of the Garden club gathered with the students, assessed the plantings for appropriate location within the prepared ground and together planted several perennial specimens. Mrs. Ward recognized that young people can experience deeper understanding of natural systems and become better stewards of the Earth by designing, cultivating, and harvesting school gardens with their own hands. The Mountaineer Garden Club encourages school garden projects that nurture community spirit, common purpose, and cultural appreciation by building bridges among students, school staff, families, and local businesses and organizations. The plants were donated by Adkins Home Store of Parsons and Mary's Greenhouse of Elkins 4

6 2019 West Virginia Garden Club Convention Carolyn McCafferty, President, West Virginia Garden Club and Carol Hovermale, Chairperson for the 2019 West Virginia Garden Club Convention would like to extend our invitation to each of you to the Spring in the Shenandoah 2019 WVGC Convention that will be held at the Holiday Inn located in Martinsburg, West Virginia, on March 21 st, 22 nd and 23 rd. We have planned an entertaining convention for all members and guest to enjoy. The cost for the hotel room will be $ plus tax. If you prefer a suite that will be $ plus tax. There will be a tour of the WVGC award winning Gateway Children s Garden, a tour for the gentlemen to the Antietam battlefield and grounds, a program on How to Make a Holiday Container, flower designs, door prizes, vendors, silent auction, sale of arrangements, raffles and a 50/50. We are planning to have group pictures taken of each garden club and district attending the Friday night banquet. If you plan to come ahead or after the convention we will have places for you to visit. The room rates will be the same as the convention. 7 We Need Bees Pollinators are in trouble. Bees, bats and other animal pollinators face many challenges in the modern world. Habitat loss, disease, parasite, and environmental contaminants have all contributed to the decline of many species of pollinators especially bees. Bees are the main pollinators for fruits and vegetables. There are over 4,000 species of bees native to North America. They nest underground, in twigs and debris, or in dead trees. This year I attended the State Fair of West Virginia in Lewisburg, WV. I met Cindy Bee, a Master Beekeeper, who works for Appalachian Headwaters, a beekeeping collective. Each year, Appalachian Headwaters trains and supports a class of new beekeepers as they learn the art and science of beekeeping. The following is from their website Through the fall and winter, staff members teach a series of programs designed to introduce beginners to the skills and knowledge required for successful beekeeping. We then use an application process to select a class of trainee beekeepers from the pool of people who attended our classes. In late spring, we provide our new partners with strong hives of overwintered bees and the equipment necessary for their hives to thrive. Headwaters provides these materials on a sliding scale based on household income. Many of our members receive their materials for free, while others have their portion of the cost deducted from honey sales later in the season. Our staff works closely with our partner beekeepers throughout the year as they maintain their hives and process their honey. We support ABC members with regular visits to their apiaries, open hive demonstrations, and on-call help for any beekeeping issues. This support also ensures that all members are abiding by our natural beekeeping protocol. 8 Fall Craft Project This sweet little DIY fall leaf bowl will be perfect to add to your fall decor this season. It s super easy to make, and I love that you can customize it to create it in any size that you want. Here s what you'll need to make your own fall leaf bowl: A bowl to use as your mold (any size you want), cooking spray, plastic wrap, silk fall leaves, Mod Podge, and a sponge brush. Start by spraying the bottom of your bowl with cooking spray. Then, fully wrap the bottom of the bowl with the plastic wrap. Apply Mod Podge to the bottom of the bowl and begin adding your leaves, brushing on the Mod Podge as you go. Continue until your bowl is covered with leaves, and add a layer of Mod Podge to the top of all of the leaves. Let sit to dry overnight, or use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process. I wanted my bowl to be a shallow candy dish, so I didn't go all the way up with my leaves. Cover more or less of the bowl depending on the look you want. Once the Mod Podge has dried completely, remove the plastic wrap from the bowl, and then remove the leaves from the plastic wrap. That s it! Now you have a cute leaf bowl perfect for fall candy, acorns, or adding to your Thanksgiving table. Good luck! ************ West Virginia Garden Club, Inc Awards The WVGCI Board of Directors adopted the following standing rule: Awards and award rules shall be printed in the September issue of the West Virginia Garden News every year. THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE AWARDS AND APPLICATION PROCESS - PLEASE CHECK THEM CLOSELY. Martha Hilton, Awards Chairman agentwv@mountain.net Award Rules 1. Award Year: November 15 to November 15 annually. This applies to all projects submitted in application form. 2. Deadline: November 15 annually. All applications and supporting evidence must be in the hands of the State Awards Chairman by this date each year. Exception: Holiday Flower Shows--See Flower Show Rule #3.; Pressbook award January 25 of each year; Youth awards (to Youth Chairman) November 15 of each year. 3. Application: The application process coordinates with SAR and NGC application processes, except where otherwise indicated in awards description. One (1) application form is required for each award you apply. However one project may qualify for more than one award. Choose your first award and complete application, then, please provide one (1) additional application blank for each additional award. The entire application does not have to be filled out for every award. The original Application contains data/proof of work, "subsequent Applications" need only supply award number, name of award, club/council and person submitting. Only one entry per award may be submitted from each club. The application form contains topics to be addressed along with any supporting photographs, so please read award descriptions carefully. The new application form is printed in this issue. Additional forms may be duplicated or obtained from District Directors, State Awards Chairman or on our website, 4. Requirements for Award Entry Submissions: A. There is a three (3) page limit, using only the front of the page. Binders and vinyl sheet protectors (books of evidence) are not allowed. Exceptions to these rules are Pressbook, Flower Show and Yearbook entries. Pressbooks and Flower Show awards still require a book of evidence. Again, read the award descriptions carefully. 10

Submission Topics - These topics of supporting evidence should be completed, if applicable, using numbering as listed, when submitting: (1) New Project: Yes or No; Beginning Date; Completion Date (2) Brief summary and objectives of project (3) Involvement of club members, other organizations, etc. (4) Project expenses and means of funding (5) Continuing involvement, follow-up, maintenance (6) Attach or insert photos, digital photos, and/or landscape plan (does not need to be professionally drawn) C. Applications may be submitted via U.S. mail or to the Awards Chairman. All applications, with the exception of those listed under Item #2 above, must be received no later than November Yearbooks: Should be submitted with Section 1 of Application form attached. 6. Applications will not be returned: (Exceptions for publications/cds/dvds) This committee is permitted to reclassify applications if deemed necessary and may rework an application to submit for Regional or National award consideration. 7. Award Presentation: Will be at the annual meeting in the spring. If club president is unable to attend, awards will be given to the district director. 8. Return of Award Trophies: All Silver trophies are being retired. Any club that is in possession of a trophy is to return it to the Awards Chairman by November 15th. Clubs will be responsible for any damages to trophies. Description of Awards 1. THE WEST VIRGINIA GARDEN CLUB AWARD* Donor: Joan M. Tuckwiller, Past President A $100 cash award presented annually to a club for outstanding civic contributions including educational activities, which emphasize the objectives of WVGCI. This may be one large project or several small ones. Completed Application including Submission Topics required) 2. THE COUNCIL AWARD* Donor: Judy Guye, Past President A $25 cash award given annually to a council for an outstanding community project. This may be one large project or several small ones. Completed Application including Submission Topics required. 3. THE VIRGINIA C. MABLEY AWARD Donor: Mrs. Gaytha Jones, Past President A $50 cash award is given annually to an individual for his or her meritorious achievement or outstanding contribution to the welfare of the community, local, state or national, through the media of gardening activities. Rules for the award are as follows: 1. Completed Section 1 of Application required. 2. Nomination may be submitted by the president or secretary of any garden club, which is a member of the WVGCI. List organization making and individual submitting nomination and their title (president or secretary). 11

12 3. On a separate sheet of paper submit nominee s full name and address. List activities and achievements of nominee in garden club work. Be specific and list all activities in the following areas: gardening, flower arranging, landscaping, official duties in Club, District, State, National or other areas of Garden Club, teaching or instructing, community beautification, civic improvement, exhibiting, youth projects and other. 4. Only winner's name will be announced each year, as candidates for this award may be nominated the following year. Individual may win award one time. 5. Only federated garden club members are eligible to be nominated. 4. BEAUTIFICATION AWARDS* A.) Rockwell Small Club Beautification Award Donor: Mrs. Carol Rockwell, Past President A $50 Cash award to be presented annually to a club of 20 members or less for an outstanding project of civic beautification. Completed Application including Submission Topics required. B.) Cunningham Large Club Beautification Award Donor: WVGCI A $50 Cash award to be presented annually to a club of 21 members or more for an outstanding project of civic beautification. Completed application and Submission Topics required. 5. THE LORETTA LIVELY COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT AWARD Donor: Family of the late Mrs. Loretta Lively, Past President A $50 cash award will be presented annually to a garden club for the most outstanding project in litter clean up and beautification in the community. Submit proof of project, giving locations and details of the project. Completed Application including Submission Topics required. 6. THE SARA H. TOWNSEND LANDSCAPE AWARD* Donor: Mrs. C. Vincent Townsend, Past President A $100 cash award to a garden club or clubs for the most outstanding civic landscaping project undertaken in cooperation with a non-gardening group or promotion of the project by the garden club or clubs. Submission topics on application must include plans and specifications and evidence of plans for future maintenance. Completed Application including Submission Topics required 7. GENEVIEVE PAYNE AWARD FOR GARDEN THERAPY* Donor: WVGCI in Memory of Mrs. E. M. Payne, Jr., Past President A $25 cash award to a garden club or clubs for outstanding garden therapy work whereby handicapped individuals received noteworthy benefit. Points for Judging: 1. Outline of project - 25 Points. This project must possess therapeutic value and emphasize horticulture and gardening activities by the handicapped person. Plan for the year must be clearly outlined. 12

13 2. Actual Work - 50 Points. This project must be undertaken according to plan with the handicapped such as Veteran's, Children's or Mental Health Facilities; classes, workshops or camps for the handicapped or underprivileged; with homebound patients. 3. Record - 25 Points. A complete record of plan, procedures and achievement, and publicity should be covered. Completed Application including Submission Topics required. 8. THE ASHWORTH ARBOR DAY AWARD Donor: Mrs. June Ashworth, Past President A $50 cash award to be given annually to a garden club/clubs, or a council for meritorious tree and/or shrub project including one or more of the following: (1) The planting, protection and preservation of trees and shrubs, especially our state flower - the Rhododendron. (2) A community-wide promotion with plantings of a single variety of tree or shrub. (3) Planning/promotion with planting of many varieties of trees and/or shrubs. (4) Arbor Day Activities 5. Completed Application including Submission Topics required. 9. THE JIMELLE F. WALKER RHODODENDRON AWARD Donor: WVGCI in Memory of Mrs. Henry L. Walker, Past President A $25 cash award given to the garden club with the greatest percentage of Rhododendron planted per member. The plants must be at least 2 years old when planted. Application form must include: 1. Number of members July 1 of the year in which application is made. 2. Number of Rhododendron planted during the award year - November 1 to October 31. Award Committee to calculate percentage to determine winner. Completed Application including Submission Topics required. 10. McDONALD AWARD FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION* Donor: WVGCI in Memory of Marjorie Hollingsworth, Past President A $50 award presented annually to a garden club(s), or council for the completion or continuation of a historic preservation project such as the restoration of a park, building and/or garden of importance to the heritage of a specific locality. Good landscaping and/or architectural design to enhance the value and significance of the site will be considered. A landscaping plan (need not be by professional landscaper) should accompany the application. It is important to use plantings that are authentic to the locality and period and to follow rules relating to the plantings of the period. Completed Application including Submission Topics required. 11. THE BIRD PRESERVATION AWARD* Donor: WVGCI in Memory of Mrs. I. D. VanMetre, Jr. A $25 cash award given annually to a garden club for outstanding accomplishments and contributions toward the environmental protection and preservation of beneficial birds, such as establishing sanctuaries, furnishing food and shelter or planting habitat to attract birds. Completed Application including Submission Topics required. 13

14 12. AWARD FOR ARTICLE ON GARDENING Donor: WVGCI A $25 cash prize to the garden club member submitting the best article on any subject of gardening or garden club activities. Rules: All articles become the property of the WVGCI and will be used as program material. The articles may be unpublished or published, but if they have been published, written permission from the publisher for submitting the articles must accompany application. None will be returned. Articles must be correct form, typed and all pages securely fastened together. Length of article must be between 500 and 2,000 words. Completed Section 1 of Application required. Points for Judging: 1. Interesting informative data 50 points 2. Educational Value 25 points 3. Composition 10 points 4. Presentation 10 points 5. Neatness 5 points 13. PUBLICITY PRESSBOOK AWARDS Donor: WVGCI A $25 cash award to the first place winner in each of three classifications as follows: A. Small Club - up to 25 members B. Medium Club - between members C. Large Club - over 50 members Eligibility: All garden clubs, districts, councils and garden centers belonging to NGC may submit a press book. Garden club entries are divided into three (3) categories based upon club membership: small: up to 25 members; medium: members; large: over 50 members. Completed Section 1 of Application required. Awards: Winners may be named: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention in each category in NGC's 8 regions. They will be presented a National Council Certificate of Commendation at Regional Conference. State Deadline: January 25 of each year. Send your entry to State Awards Chairman. State Judging: First Place winners in each category will be sent to the Regional Publicity Chairman for competition among the 1st place winners from each of the states in the region. Format: Entries must be submitted in a folder with holes to firmly hold the pages; a theme-style binder, amphile or oxford brief folder. No heavy scrapbooks, oversized portfolios or loose clippings will be judged. Size x 11" or 9 x 12". The cover must have a label affixed stating the category. Garden Clubs: Note category (Small, Medium or Large), name of club, city, state, region and name and address of person submitting Pressbook. District: State name of person submitting pressbook, number, state. Councils and Garden Centers: State name, location and state. Contents: 1. Materials must consist of only actual newspaper, magazine, newsletter or any 14

15 printed publication clipping with the name and date of publication over each article. No decorative embellishments will affect judging. Affix contents in chronological order beginning January 1 and ending December 31. Pages must be numbered and an index is required. 2. Each published item must contain name of the club, district, council or garden center and/or individual(s) identified as a garden club member and/or member of the district, council or garden center. Underline the first use of the club s name, district, council or garden center s name in the story or article. 3. Pressbooks will be judged on quality, quantity, diversity of coverage and requirements set forth on attached Guideline for Evaluation of Publicity Pressbook. 4. Pressbooks will be returned if stamped, self-addressed envelope is included with entry. 5. Number of pages unlimited. Guidelines for Evaluation of Publicity Pressbooks: 1. Pressbook Criteria 30 points 2. Quality 35 points 3. Quantity 20 points 4. Diversity of Coverage 15 points Total 100 points 14. AWARD OF HONOR CONSERVATION CITATION 1. Honorary citation to a person or persons not affiliated with a garden club for extraordinary contribution in some area of conservation. 2. Honorary citation to an industry, commercial enterprise, or civic organization for extraordinary contribution in some area of conservation. Rules: One or more conservation citations may be presented annually. Nominations for the Award of Honor, along with supporting evidence, may be made by the president of a local garden club or council upon unanimous approval of its members and presented to the awards Committee for consideration. The Awards Committee may include one or more conservationists in judging nomination for this award. Completed Section 1 of Application required. 15. AWARD OF MERIT CITATION A. An Award of Merit to recognize meritorious efforts in related garden club activities, which may be given to a garden club member, non-garden club member, federated club or group of federated clubs. This is to be awarded at the discretion of Awards Committee and President. B. An Award of Merit to be awarded at the discretion of the Awards Committee and President. No Application necessary. 16. AWARDS OF HONOR WVGCI will present Awards of Honor to business and industrial establishments in West Virginia which have taken an interest in landscaping, maintenance and other means, either on-going or completed, in making their buildings, grounds and surroundings attractive to deserve commendation for their outstanding efforts. 15

16 Garden Clubs, after choosing the establishment they wish to sponsor, should contact an official in charge and ask permission to submit an entry to avoid duplication of sponsorship. Each club is permitted one entry which is to include a typed report on x 11" paper setting forth reasons why entry deserved consideration. Such evidence as pictures, news clippings, etc. may be included with typed report. Ten (10) of these awards may be presented at the annual meeting to the president or representative of the club(s) sponsoring said establishments. These awards will be presented to the winning groups by sponsoring club(s). Awards may not be selfsolicited by firms. Government agencies and private properties are excluded. Completed Section 1 of Application required. 17. THE ELEANOR W. CAIN MEMORIAL AWARD* Donor: Family of the late Eleanor W. Cain, Past President A $100 award will be awarded to a club for making landscaping improvements around an already established Blue Star Memorial or by-way marker. Patriotic colors/themes will be given preference. This project may be a replacement for a destroyed or long neglected landscape. Completed Application including Submission Topics required. 18. SHRIVER ARTISTIC FLOWER DESIGN AWARD Donor: WVGCI in Memory of Jerry Shriver, Past President A $50 cash award and a certificate may be awarded to an individual garden club member for distinguished achievement in flower arrangement. Entrants must submit a standard (3x5" or 4x6") color photo and the negative of the arrangement or the photograph saved on a disc. Entries will be judged by panel with a representative from the Council of Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judges of WV. It is not a requirement that the entry be from a flower show. There is no restriction on the material and/or type of container used, but a list of materials must be attached to each photograph with name, address and garden club of the individual submitting entry and title of arrangement. SMOKEY BEAR & WOODSY OWL POSTER CONTEST* First thru fifth grade students are invited to participate in the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest. The entry posters should encourage children to take a personal role in preventing wildfires or conserving natural resources. Winners on the State level will be sent to SAR and their winners receive a $10 cash award; then sent to NGC for judging. The National winner will win a free trip to Washington, D.C. for a presentation ceremony, with round-trip airfare and accommodations for four. A $100 US Savings Bond will be awarded to the first place winner for each grade level as well. National Winners to be announced at the NGC annual meeting. Poster Topic is the basic message for the Smokey Bear poster is Remember, Only You Can Prevent Wildfires and for Woodsy Owl poster is Lend a Hand-Care for the Land Poster Rules: 1. Poster must feature Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl. 2. Smokey Bear poster should be based upon preventing wildfires and the topic for the current year s poster set by NGC (see above). 3. 24 Presidential Awards Carolyn McCafferty, WVGCI President (All are Yearly Awards) Keep Planting America P1. $50 This cash award will be presented annually to a garden club for the most outstanding community container garden. It can be one container or several (such as hanging baskets around town). To be considered, it must be movable. It can be a newly established container garden or an existing one your club maintains. Completed application including submission topics required. Educational Opportunities P2. $50 This cash award will be presented annually to the garden club that has the most members attend WVGCI schools. (Flower Show School, Landscape Design School and Environmental Studies School) in one year. A list of attending members will be verified with the school s registrar. If there is a tie, it will then be awarded to the largest percentage of club members. Youth Involvement P3. A $50 This cash award will be presented annually to the garden club for the most outstanding project involving youth. (church group, girl scouts, boy scots, 4-H group, etc.) It must be a gardening related activity. Completed application including submission topics required. Saving the Environment P4. $50 This cash award will be presented annually to the individual garden club member with the most unique project that uses some type of recyclable material. Acceptable uses are recycled items to decorate your garden, planting in recycled products or making recycled items useful in your gardens. WVGC Life Membership Scholarship* Juniors, Seniors and Graduate students from WV attending any college may apply for the $3,000 scholarship from WVGCI. The student must be majoring in Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Botany, Forestry, Biology, Agronomy, Conservation, Plant Pathology/Science, Environmental Concerns, City Planning, Land Management, Habitat or Forest/System Ecology, Agriculture Education and/or other allied fields. The West Virginia recipient is then eligible for consideration for the SAR scholarship and one of 35 scholarships of $3,500 awarded by NGC. 25 S2. ESTHER J. HINCHMAN SCHOLARSHIP Donor: Esther J. Hinchman A West Virginia High School Senior planning to attend college (in state or out) may apply for this $500 Scholarship. The student must plan to major in some form of Environmental Studies (Horticulture, Landscape Design, Forestry, Botany, Conservation, Land Management, Environmental Concerns, Geology or related studies). WVGC will forward funds in the winner s name, to the college/ university of his/her choice for books or tuition. A qualifying student is one who is majoring in the study of Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Botany, Plant Pathology, Biology, Environmental Conservation, Forestry, Land Management, Agronomy, Agriculture Education, Wildlife Science, City Planning and/or allied subjects. 29 57th West Virginia Wildflower Pilgrimage (May 2018) I had to have my arm twisted to attend the Wildflower Pilgrimage at Blackwater Falls this past May. As Tygart Valley district director, it was my responsibility to deliver cookies and door prizes as part of the rotation, our turn. I hesitated, not sure about wildflower hikes, being less abled bodied than in the past, could I keep up, etc. Patty McComas, TV assistant director, who attended before, encouraged me, informing me that there were classes offered and not all the walks had the same degree of difficulty. The WP is an overlooked jewel that not enough garden members take part in. This past year, 57th, is a well organized event with over 300 people attending. Pilgrims, and birding aficionado, professors, DNR staff, retired folks, 60 or so names on the roster, as leaders for the hikes, speakers for a class or program. A very enthusiastic and knowledgeable group to spend a couple of days and share with the pilgrims. Garden club members manned the tour signup table. Emily Shirey, state chairman, did comment, that it had been awhile since, the WP had two mild days together for Fri and Sat. I m sure it contributed to the camaraderie and enjoyment. She had advised me to check the weather, and dress accordingly, boots and mittens. raincoats. sneakers, not a dress up activity, and they went on tours regardless. Tours are rated from 1. Easy, mostly even terrain, to 4. Extremely Difficult be extremely fit. 13 were offered on Fri. and 14 were offered on Sat.: concluding with a banquet on Sat. evening. Wildflower and birding classes were offered Thurs. of registration and the evening programs were educational. Of course, most of the expense of attending the WP is accommodations and meals. Patty and I were guests since we provided cookies and door prizes. (Thank you very much.) However, I am putting the 58th WP on my calendar for I didn t finish reading the wall with the historical articles when WVGC, Inc. first started the event.
