A wide selection of light sources and configurations give you a custom lightbar with off-the-shelf convenience, that is easily upgradeable later. Edge e ULTRA Series Strobe Lightbars Edge Ultra starts with modular architecture snap-in/lock-in components, and an internal wiring harness that lets you select strobe, LED and halogen warning configurations. Easily upgradeable. For example, buy a four-strobe version today; add up to eight more strobe modules or other options at a later date. Distributors will appreciate the convenience of stocking basic assemblies with factory installed wiring harnesses. All Edge Ultra lightbars have a slightly wider footprint, which provides greater stability and weight distribution. These low power function wires need less than 1/2 amp to operate, allow for simple operational independence of each lightbar control function, and make wiring a snap! 8 SERIAL COMMUNICATIONS LIGHTBARS Since 1992 Whelen has lead the industry with Serial Communication products for law enforcement. Tens of thousands of these system components are out on the road working for you already. Their reliability and enhanced performance add the extra measure of safety for the hazards you face every day. Edge Ultra Serial Communication Lightbars Serial Communication two wire network makes it easy to add, upgrade and change modules to the lightbar Systems. With the classic appearance of the successful Edge 9000 Series, this lightbar is two inches wider in stance and features two-wire Serial Communication and modular construction. Edge Ultra lightbars are strobe based, Ultra Freedom lightbars are Super-LED platform. Edge Ultra, strobe lightbar with halogen take-downs, LED flashers, duplex strobe/halogen and duplex alleys Ultra Freedom, Super-LED lightbar with halogen take-downs, and duplex alleys 8 Ultra lightbar offers four, six, eight, ten or twelve strobe models. Ultra Freedom offers the standard FL basic four corner Super-LED model, or new FD upgrade with extended corner module for added light to the critical corners, then add up to twelve directional modules for a total of sixteen Super-LED modules. Duplex modules front, rear or sides allow many options including Traffic Advisor capability. Two inches wider, same aerodynamic height as classic Edge 9000 models. "Hands-Free" operation keeps your attention on the road for added safety. Cycle through flash patterns and siren tones at the touch of one button or a tap on the horn ring. Serial Communication design integrates warning components, provides a system response model easier to initiate by the operator. Operating characteristics are programmed via a personal computer or laptop with the Serial Communications Programming Kit which includes transporter, software and interconnect cables. Secure at the user level, not allowing the user to change the switch functions without approval. Programming for operation is not affected by loss of power and will not be lost or disabled at the operator level by pressing the wrong sequence of buttons on the controller. Easy to upgrade and service in the field with snap-in lamp modules. Only eight (end cap) screws and nuts are used for ease of service of power supplies and I/O boards which are located at the ends of the lightbar for easy access. 9 SERIAL COMMUNICATIONS LIGHTBARS LFL Liberty Super-LED Serial Communications Lightbars Systems are sold through Authorized Serial Communications Dealers only. The LFL Series uses Serial Communication to link together the light and siren operations in your vehicle so they work together as an integral warning system. LFL lightbars are extremely low profile with state-of-the-art optics for outstanding light output and performance. LFL Liberty features an all Super-LED module design for long life and low current draw. Options include take-downs, alley lights and a five or six Super-LED Traffic Advisor built-in. Extreme low profile lightbar (2-1/2" high) with "Hands-Free" operation for added safety. Easy to install with two power wires and two serial communication wires. Pre-wired with 15' passenger side exit cable. 31 MOTORCYCLE PRODUCTS This article originally appeared in the November, 1956 edition of the Joliet, Illinois Spectator. Police cycle gets first rotating lamp Joliet police yesterday accepted as a gift the first rotating emergency light ever to work successfully on a motorcycle. It is believed to be the only such device in the country. There has long been a need for such a warning light, Police Chief Joseph Trizna said in accepting the gift. We naturally are quite proud that the All American city of Joliet has been honored with this important first in the field safety. The rotating emergency light mounted on a bracket to fit on a motorcycle s front fender was presented to the police department by its inventor, George W. Whelen of the Whelen Engineering Company. He has been testing the safety device for a year. For the past three months the light has been mounted on the cycle of Capt. Orville Belfield and has received his approval as having met every test. The story of the rotating safety light, similar to the ones mounted on top of squad cars, began in August of That was when Officer Louis Barney met his death on a motorcycle. It was an overcast day when he came upon a traffic jam. He moved out into the left lane of traffic to investigate. Oncoming cars were unable to see him until it was too late. Shortly thereafter Whelen and then Capt. Trizna and Belfield discussed the need for an emergency light for motorcycles. Trizna, who formerly patrolled the streets on a motorcycle, was aware of the problems. The pursuit lamps on a motorcycle throw a direct beam and give the rider no illumination of side areas. A rotating reflector type light was needed, such as in use on squad cars. The problem was that a motorcycle creates a special problem for such a light. The vibration of the cycle make it difficult to find a lamp which will function under those punishing conditions. Whelen brought to the project experience in manufacturing lights for aviation. After a long period of experimentation, he had the problems licked. Chief Trizna said he hopes eventually to have all ten motorcycles in the department equipped with the rotating lights. He added that he expected other police departments throughout the United States also to equip their wheels with the device. Survival gear for the motorcycle professional.
