THE MINI-RADIAC IS A PERSONAL DOSIMETER/RADIATION MONITOR. IT IS USED TO DETECT ACCUMULATED DOSE AND/OR RATE OF RADIATION EXPOSURE. IT IS DESIGNED TO ALERT AND INFORM THE WEARER OF THE PRESENCE OF GAMMA RADIATION BY FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF WARNING/ALERT ALARMS AND DISPLAYS WHICH INCLUDE A DIGITAL LCD DISPLAY, AN AUDIBLE ALARM, A VIBRATING ALARM, AND BLINKING GREEN LIGHTS.
THE MINI-RADIAC IS ABLE TO DETECT AND DISPLAY LOW AND HIGH LEVELS OF GAMMA RADIATION BOTH AS ACCUMULATED DOSE AND RATE. THIS UNIT WILL DETECT AND DISPLAY LOW LEVELS SUCH AS NORMAL BACKGROUND RADIATION ( 5 20 micro R/hr ) ALL THE WAY UP TO 999 R/hr AS EITHER RATE OR DOSE.
THE MINI-RADIAC IS BUILT TO MILITARY SPECIFICATIONS AND IS ACCURATE AND EXTREMELY DUARABLE. IT IS WATERPROOF, INTRINSICALLY SAFE FOR USE IN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES AND IS DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND AN ELECTRO- MAGNETIC PULSE ( EMP ) THAT OCCURS DURING A NUCLEAR DETONATION.
INTRODUCTION THE MINI- RADIAC CAN MEASURE AND DISPLAY BOTH THE RATE OF EXPOSURE (RATE), (which is the amount of radiation being measured at the moment) AND THE TOTAL ACCUMULATED RADIATION DOSE RECEIVED (DOSE). THE ALARMS: THE MINI-RADIAC S PRESET ALARMS FOR BOTH RATE AND CUMULATIVE DOSE CAN ALERT YOU TO HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS. WHEN AN ALARM THRESHOLD IS EXCEEDED, THE DISPLAY WILL BEGIN FLASHING,BEEPING AND VIBRATING. THE RADIATION UNITS: THE MINI-RADIAC IS DESIGNED TO READ EFFECTS OF GAMMA RADIATION IN ROENTGENS (R) PER HOUR

AT THE REQUEST OF THE LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT, THE FOLLOWING LOW AND HIGH ALARM LEVELS HAVE BEEN FACTORY PRESET. DOSE RATE LOW ALARM LEVEL: 2 mr/hr HIGH ALARM LEVEL: 10 R/Hr ACCUMULATED DOSE LOW ALARM LEVEL: 5 R HIGH ALARM LEVEL: 10 R ADDITIONAL FEATURES THE ABILITY TO CHANGE ALARM LEVELS FROM THE FRONT PANEL HAS BEEN DISABLED. THE ABILITY TO RESET THE ACCUMULATED DOSE FROM THE FRONT PANEL REMAINS ENABLED.
QUICK START TO TURN ON, PRESS AND HOLD ON/OFF * THE DISPLAY WILL SHOW THE NUMBERS 0,1,3,4, IN SEQUENCE. * THE DISPLAY WILL CHANGE TO THE RATE MODE; THE WORD RATE WILL BE SEEN AT THE TOP LEFT OF THE SCREEN.
QUICK START CONT. *TO CHECK THE ACCUMULATED DOSE * PRESS DOSE; THE ACCUMULATED DOSE WILL BE DISPLAYED * WHILE IN THE RATE MODE, THE UNIT WILL CONTINUE TO TO COLLECT AND STORE DOSE MODE DATA. *TO RESET THE ACCUMULATED DOSE TO ZERO * PRESS BOTH DOSE AND CLR/TEST. * THE DOSE WILL FLASH ALL ZEROS AND CLEAR THE ACCUMULATED DOSE.
* THE ALARM INDICATORS, ALARM, AUD AND/OR VIS, WILL BE SEEN ONLY IF AT LEAST ONE OF THE INDICATORS HAS BEEN ACTIVATED. * THE UNIT WILL START COUNTING AND DISPLAYING THE CURRENT EXPOSURE RATE. NATURALLY OCCURING BACKGROUND RADIATION WILL CAUSE THE UNIT TO DISPLAY A LOW READING. ( 5-20 MICROROENTGENS PER HOUR )
* TESTING THE DISPLAY. SET THE UNIT TO RATE DISPLAY MODE* * PRESS AND HOLD THE CLR/TEST KEY UNTIL YOU SEE THE TEST DISPLAY BELOW * A SET OF NUMBERS IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER WILL APPEAR. CHECK THAT ALL OF THE NUMBERS ARE EXACTLY AS SHOWN BELOW (blinking)
TESTING THE DISPLAY CONT. MINI-RADIAC IF A b IS DISPLAYED, THE MINI-RADIAC IS NO LONGER FUNCTIONING BECAUSE THE BATTERIES ARE ALMOST EXHAUSTED. IF NOTHING IS DISPLAYED, THE BATTERIES ARE DEAD. WITH NO POWER TO THE UNIT, YOU MAY HAVE LOST ALL DATA IN THE MEMORY. THE GN LOCATED IN THE UPPER RIGHT CORNER OF THE DISPLAY IS USED ONLY BY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIANS. IT S SHOWN SO YOU CAN VERIFY THAT THE ENTIRE DISPLAY IS OPERATING PROPERLY. CHECKING THE ALARM: AT ANY TIME DURING THE CLR/TEST SEQUENCE OF NUMBERS: PRESS THE RATE KEY THE ALARM BUZZER SHOULD SOUND AND THE INSTANTANEOUS RATE LIGHT SHOULD TURN ON. PRESS THE DOSE KEY THE ALARM BUZZER SHOULD SOUND AND THE ACCUMULATED DOSE LIGHT SHOULD TURN ON. PRESS THE ALARM KEY BOTH ALARM LIGHTS SHOULD TURN ON AND THE ALARM BUZZER SHOULD SOUND.
AT THE END OF THE TEST SEQUENCE, THE BLINKING 9 WILL APPEAR, INDICATING THAT THE RATE MODE IS OPERATIONAL. BACKLIGHT TEST: PRESS AND RELEASE THE LIGHT KEY, THE DISPLAY BACKLIGHT WILL TURN ON FOR ABOUT FIVE SECONDS. THIS FUNCTION IS MEANT TO BE USED IN TOTAL DARKNESS: THE BACKLIGHT MAY NOT BE VISIBLE IN DAYLIGHT OR NORMAL ROOM LIGHTING. LOW BATTERY INDICATORS: * IF A BLINKING BAT APPEARS IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER OF THE DISPLAY, THE BATTERIES HAVE NO MORE THAN 10 HOURS OF USEFUL LIFE REMAINING. THEY SHOULD BE REPLACED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE * IF A BLINKING b IS DISPLAYED, THE UNIT WILL HAVE STOPPED FUNCTIONING: THERE IS ONLY A ENOUGH POWER LEFT TO KEEP THE MEMORY ALIVE FOR A SHORT TIME. IF THE BATTERIES ARE NOT REPLACED AT THIS TIME, ALL DATA AND SETTINGS WILL BE LOST.
SOURCE FINDER MODE : THE SOURCE FINDER OR CHIRP MODE ALLOWS THE UNIT TO LOCATE AN ISOLATED SOURCE. AS THE UNIT IS MOVED CLOSER TO THE RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL, THE UNIT WILL CHIRP. AS THE UNIT APPROACHES THE SOURCE, THE RADIATION INTENSITY INCREASES, CAUSING THE CHIRP RATE TO INCREASE. ENABLING THE SOURCE FINDER MODE: PRESS AND HOLD THE RATE KEY UNTIL THE DISPLAY CHANGES TO A FLASHING 1. RELEASE THE RATE KEY. EXITING THE SOURCE FINDER MODE: PRESS AND HOLD THE RATE KEY UNTIL THE DISPLAY CHANGES TO A FLASHING 0. RELEASE THE RATE KEY.
TURNING THE UNIT OFF: PRESS THE ON/OFF KEY OFF WILL BE DISPLAYED YOU LL SEE THE UNIT WILL TURN IT S POWER OFF COMPLETING THE TESTS: WHEN THE MINI-RADIAC HAS PASSED ALL TESTS, THE UNIT IS READY FOR OPERATION. IF THE UNIT FAILS ANY OF THE OPERATIONAL VERIFICATION TESTS, CONTACT S & M FOR SERVICE
SILENCING THE ALARM AND VIBRATION: THE AUDIBLE AND VIBRATION CAN BE CLEARED BY PRESSING CLR/TEST. THE VISUAL WILL CONTINUE TO INDICATE ALARM UNTIL THE RADIATION LEVEL RETURNS BELOW THE LOW LIMIT.
DEFINITIONS DOSE ACCMULATED AMOUNT OF RADIATION MEASURED OVER A PERIOD OF TIME RATE THE AMOUNT OF RADIATION MEASURED EVERY 2 SECONDS DISPLAYED AS UNITS PER HOUR ROENTGEN UNIT OF MEASURE OF RADIATION EXPOSURE; MONITORS THE AMOUNT OF RADIATION RECEIVED DISPLAY UNITS : MICRO (u)ur - ONE MILLIONTH OF A ROENTGEN ROENTGEN MILLI (m) mr - ONE THOUSANDTH OF A BASE UNIT - (R) - ONE ROENTGEN
MAINTENANCE: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE CONSISTS OF ROUTINE CHECKS OF THE EQUIPMENT BEFORE AND AFTER EACH USE. ROUTINE CHECKS INCLUDE: * CLEANING THE UNIT * INSPECTING THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT DOOR * INSPECTING THE BATTERY CONTACTS FOR CORROSION
*BATTERIES* *MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE UNIT IS TURNED OFF BEFORE INSERTING NEW BATTERIES* *CAUTION* THE MINI-RADIAC STORES ITS CURRENT DATA IN MEMORY WHEN IT S TURNED OFF. TO PREVENT DATA LOSS, YOU MUST TURN THE MINI-RADIAC OFF BEFORE REMOVING BATTERIES
