This guide to the building is intended to provide information about the functions of the building in an easily comprehensible way. We hope you find the premises functional and comfortable for your purposes. If you have any questions, you are always very welcome to contact our responsible facility manager. 2 State the room number when reporting faults, see outside the door or wall. Problems related specifically to the institutional activities are to be reported to the Institution. Parking and public transport Parking spaces are available, at a fee, in the immediate surroundings of Alfred Nobels Allé 12 and 23. There are garage parking spaces for rent in the building. Nearest commuter train station is Flemmingsberg. For other types of public transport please refer to the SL information service at Refuse collection There are several local joint refuse collection points in the building where you should sort the refuse into the following fractions: - Batteries and minor electronic equipment - Coloured glass - Non coloured glass - Domestic waste - Rigid plastic packing - Metal packing - Other refuse - Cardboard Combustible waste such as plastic bags, pens, CD-discs and the like are to be discarded in your paper bin. However, waste food is to be discarded in the kitchen or kitchenette. Office paper is to be sorted locally. Used ink cassettes are sent back to the supplier. Security cards and keys are administered by the Karolinska Institutet and the loss of these should be reported immediately. Bear security in mind and try to determine whether an unknown visitor has a legitimate reason to be in the building. Rest room There is a locked rest room available for students on level 1. Contact the institution to gain access. Surveillance and burglar alarm Surveillance of the campus area is carried out by a security company engaged by Karolinska Institutet. The security company can be reached at The building is equipped with a burglar alarm. The alarm is remote-connected to the security company, engaged by Karolinska Institutet, which turns out immediately. Accessibility General Sida 3

Fire safety and security Automatic fire alarm In the event of fire the emergency evacuation alarm is set off automatically by means of smoke detectors. An activated fire alarm, i.e. the signal for emergency evacuation to take place, is given by a spoken message and a bell within the concerned areas of the building. The emergency evacuation alarm does normally not concern the entire building. A triggered alarm is automatically forwarded to the emergency services and to Akademiska Hus. A fire that can not be extinguished with the available fire appliances are to be reported to the emergency services via telephone number 112. Close doors and windows in order to restrict the fire. To manually set off the emergency evacuation alarm there are push-buttons placed adjacent to the emergency evacuation routes. Fire cells In order to prevent fire and smoke spreading, the building is divided into a number of fire cells. Each fire cell is enclosed by fire-classified walls and doors. Doors on the perimeters of fire cells are automatically closed in the event of fire and must under no circumstances be wedged open or similar. You can close the doors manually via a push button labelled branddörrstängare. Sida 4

5 Sprinkler The building is fitted with a water sprinkler system on level 3, 4, 5 and parts of level 6. Activated system triggers an alarm that is automatically forwarded to the emergency services as well as Akademiska Hus. A sprinkler head will burst and, consequently, discharge water when a preset temperature limit is exceeded. The sprinkler system can only be switched off by the responsible operational personnel. Emergency evacuation Evacuate according to signs and emergency evacuation plans. The lifts must not be used in the event of fire. The reassembly point is at the parking area opposite the main entrance. Naturally, not one fire is like another and actions must be taken with respect to the individual circumstances. Nevertheless, learn the basic rules: Rescue Warn Call 112 Extinguish - Save yourself and other persons in your vicinity, but do not expose yourself to danger. - Warn others that may be at risk - Alert the rescue services by calling Extinguish the fire if possible Security alarm There are security alarms in rest rooms and the toilets for people with disabilities. An activated alarm is indicated locally by sound and light in the corridor outside the room. Since the alarm is not forwarded it is of great importance that you, who hear or see this alarm, make contact with the person in distress. The alarm is restored locally in the room. Sida 5

6 Lift emergency alarm In case the lift stops in between floors press and hold the emergency signal push-button for at least 15 seconds. A verbal contact will then be established, via the emergency telephone, with the lift emergency service company which will take immediate actions. The lift emergency alarm is automatically given to Akademiska Hus as well as to the lift emergency service company which will provide assistance and help the persons in distress. When a lift emergency alarm is set off, a siren outside the lift sounds with a pulsating signal. Electricity and lighting Elektric and magnetic fields In order to minimize electrical and magnetic fields, the electrical installation has separate neutral- and protective ground conductors, i.e. a TN-S system, which is also referred to as a 5-wire system. The user ᤀ 猀 equipment must be designed to suit a five-wire system in order to avoid disturbing other electrical installations. When equipment is purchased and installed the design must comply with a five-wire system. All wires and cables should be of the shielded type. Electricity, telephone and computer network There are electricity distribution boxes in locked areas on each floor. If there is a power failure or a triggered fuse, the fault must be remedied before the power can be restored. Please contact Akademiska Hus if you experience repeated power failures. Sockets labelled data are only intended for computers and must not be used for other purposes. To connect telephony- or data equipment, please contact the responsible telephony or computer manager at the institution. Save energy and switch off the computer when you leave! Sida 6

7 Lighting Lighting in corridors and common areas is time controlled. In addition to the pre-set time, the lighting is turned on and off by means of presence detectors. A small number of lamps remains lit 24 hours a day, referred to as guidance lighting. Outdoor lighting is time controlled. Other lighting is manually switched on and off via push buttons. VVS Room climate Certain rooms are equipped with comfort cooling. You can manually alter the room temperature +/- 3 C by adjusting a regulator by the door. The center position of the regulator corresponds to a default temperature of approximately 21 C. Turn the regulator knob towards plus in order to heat the room and towards minus for cooling. Lit green led indicates cooling. Save energy by adjusting the regulator to the middle position, if nobody will be present in the room for several days. Bear in mind! There can be a delay for any manual adjustment to have an impact on the temperature, due to the thermal inertia of the building. Intensified airflow In certain rooms the airflow can be increased for a preset period of time by pressing a push button. The airflow is automatically restored to normal after the preset period of time. Laboratories The laboratories are provided with ventilated workstation intended for different safety levels, e.g. fume cabinets, LAF- and ventilated benches etc. Each laboratory is provided with compressed air outlets. 8 Deionised water can be obtained within lab. zone. Bear in mind to economise the use of deionised water. Awnings The façades towards the east and the west are provided with awnings that are automatically controlled by means of sun- and winddetectors. Other awnings can be manouvred manually via push buttons or switches. Pressing the ᰀ 甀瀀 arrow ᴀ will retract the awnings and the ᴀ 搀漀眀渀 arrow ᴀ will extend them. On the switch press ᰀ 渀攀搠 ᴀ to extend the awning and upp to retract it. At strong wind the awning is automatically retracted. Sun curtains Skylights on level 6 and the façade towards Alfred Nobels Allé 8 are provided with sun curtains in order to shield off sun radiation. The sun curtains are controlled via a push button where the ᰀ 甀瀀 arrow ᴀ raises the curtain, the center button halts the curtain in its present position and the down arrow lowers the curtain. Sida 8
