Doors and alarm Entrance to Rudbeck Laboratory goes via the main entrance on the buildings western side, see map below. Other entrances are via R3 that is locked around the clock. Access card is needed. C5 have an entrance on the south side. The main entrance are locked 4 p.m. 6:30 a.m. on weekdays and around the clock on weekends. Access card + code is needed. All buildings are alarmed. The following rules apply to everyone at The Rudbeck Laboratory The Campus Manager will give all new people an introduction to the buildings, explain safety issues and how to find your way around the premises. Only people with permission are allowed to work at Rudbeck lab, permission is granted by the Head of Department. Your supervisor is responsible for instructing you in the correct way how to work in the lab. You will together fill in a registration form to get permission to Uppsala University's staff system Akka and to get access rights to the Rudbeck Laboratory. The registration form shall then be sent to passerkort@rudbeck.uu.se. The entry card is then handed to you by the entry card administration, entrance C1, (see map below), opening hours Monday Thursday 7-12 a.m. and 1-3 p.m., and Friday by agreement, call
3 A separate introduction is required to work in specialised labs i.e. the cell lab, blood lab, radioactivity lab, virus lab and gel labs Information is provided by the person in charge of the respective labs. Written information is also provided. After reading the information, the paper must be signed and returned. Clean up after yourself If something is broken, tell the person in charge and they will take measures. If something non-hazardous is spilt, wipe it up and clean the area. If something hazardous is spilt, discuss with the person in charge how to handle it. Remember, nobody is perfect! We can all make mistakes, so there is no harm in asking for advice. What to do in case of injury You can find a band-aid and eye shower station in each corridor. All injuries are reported to the immediate supervisor and to the safety officer. Phone number can be found on page 5. Common service Reception, main entrance Tel: , receptionen@rudbeck.uu.se Opening hours: Mon Thu, 08:30-15:30, Fri 8:30 15:00, (closed for lunch 11:00-11:45). Sat Sun and holidays closed. Contact the reception: If you are expecting visitors. Specify the visitors name and your telephone number. All visitors must be registered at the reception who then contacts you when they have arrived. Or you can wait at the reception and meet them up yourself. If you want to borrow conference telephone, portable hearing loops, laserpointer/presenter, etc. You can also get keys, temporary access cards, leave outgoing parcels for courier services to pick up, print labels for outgoing PostNord parcels (requires an UU reference code). Contact the reception for booking of the Rudbeck and Fåhraeus Hall, pick up prints and handouts, put up info notices on the notice board, (leave these to the receptionist who then put up the info). Postboxes For staff at C11, R3 and R4 there are individual post boxes located in mailroom 41124, at the elevators on ground floor. The door is locked up with your access card. Lunch room Lunch room and kitchen are located in C11 at ground floor, 2:nd and 3:rd floor. Staff in R3 and R4 uses the lunch rooms in C11. Lab and glassware cleaning and sterilization, S floor Eva Lingman ( ), Annika Bellqvist ( ), diskavdelning@rudbeck.uu.se All dirty glassware must be emptied and rinsed, all labeling removed and then placed on a trolley marked disk. The staff will collect it. Containers for soaking glass pipettes must be cleaned once a week and refilled with clean water. Regularly check for shelf warmers and return unused glassware to ensure a constant supply. Autoclave schedule weekdays at 6:00, 8:00, 10:00 and 12:00. Collect your autoclaved items as soon as possible. 3

Visiting hours: Tue-Thu 9:30-11:30 Tel: Contact the IT department about their services at tel: Waste sorting and recycling Waste should be sorted in appropriate recycling containers in the waste room, basement level C11 and basement level C5. Batteries Small metal items Metal packaging, aluminium foil Glass; clear and coloured separated. Porcelain, drinking glass and lab glassware Corrugated fibre board boxes Hard paper packages Hard and soft plastic Styrofoam boxes; tape and labels must be removed. Small electronic devices Light bulbs Toner cassettes and ink cartridges without boxes Paper o Envelopes, paper with tape and post-it notes is sorted as burnable/combustible waste o Office papers, newspapers, magazines and journals in grey containers on each floor Contaminated or contagious waste can NOT be left for recycling. Specific glass and plastic waste As specific glass and plastic waste means glass or plastic packaging with at least one of these symbols: These should be placed in plastic bags in the room for specific glass waste. 4
5 Hazardous waste Yellow plastic boxes are collected in the small room opposite the waste sorting room in the basement (floor K). Labels for the boxes are collected at the reception desk. When leaving the box in the waste room it should be correctly labelled (tel. nr. and lab/group name). In this box you place: Tips, gloves, plastic pipettes and empty small gas tubes (from Fireboy), syringes, scalpel blades and glass slides Biological waste, blood tubes etc. Chemical waste Retrieval of chemical waste is koordinated by the Campus Manager two to three times a year. Extra retrieval is ordered from Ragn-Sells AB customer service at State that you are calling from Uppsala University and specify our customer no For liquids you can use empty, rinsed bottles of glass. Do not store liquids for a long time in plastic containers; it can affect the plastic material. DO NOT MIX different types of chemicals in the containers. Flammable, poisonous or heavy metal waste must not be poured into the sink. Check the web-site for Uppsala Kommun regarding what is allowed; To reduce the amount of chemical waste you should evaporate phenol etc., and neutralize acids and bases in the fume hood.
