1 An overview of the NBN co Equipment installation and Telstra services on the NBN TELSTRA LANDLORD GUIDE TO FIBRE CONNECTION INSIDE: What you and your tenant need to know
2 A guide to installing Telstra services on the NBN at your rental property A smooth connection starts with good communication If you re a tenant Please share this guide with your landlord that way you and your landlord will better understand what happens during the installation appointments and where the NBN Co equipment should be installed at the property. To connect your home to fibre with Telstra, you will need verbal consent from your landlord for the installation of the NBN Co equipment prior to the installation appointments. Telstra technicians will ask you to sign a form confirming that you have obtained your landlord s verbal consent and authority for the installation of the NBN Co equipment, including where the equipment is located. If your landlord doesn t agree to the installation, you ll need to let us know at least two business days before your scheduled appointments. For the installation, a person authorised on the customer s Telstra account, who is over 18 years old, will need to be home to: Let the NBN Co installer in and authorise the final location of NBN Co equipment Approve any additional charges. Feel free to keep reading; however this guide is intended primarily for landlords. For more information on your installation and connecting to fibre, check out our Telstra Guide to Fibre Connection, available at telstra.com.au/unlockamazing If you re a landlord This guide outlines what you need to know about the installation of NBN Co equipment and Telstra services on the National Broadband Network (NBN) at your property. As part of the installation, NBN Co will need to install equipment on the external and internal walls of your property. Important installation information for landlords fibre connection Installation Appointments One of our team of Telstra Fibre Connection Specialists will liaise with your tenant and arrange a time for NBN Co to install the NBN Co equipment at the premises. As the owner of the property where the NBN Co equipment and Telstra services on the NBN will be installed, Telstra will require confirmation from the tenant that you have provided consent for the installation including where the NBN Co equipment will be installed. Your tenant is responsible for obtaining your verbal consent prior to the NBN Co installation appointment. After the NBN Co appointment, a Telstra technician will attend your premises to install the Telstra services on the NBN. At this appointment the Telstra technician will ask your tenant to sign a form confirming that they have obtained your verbal consent for the installation of the NBN Co and Telstra equipment. For the installation, a person authorised on the customer s Telstra account, who is over 18 years old, usually the tenant, will need to be home to: Let the NBN Co installer in and authorise the final location of NBN Co equipment Approve any additional charges. As the property owner, if you d like to attend the NBN Co appointment or be available by phone for consultation, please arrange this with your tenant. Telstra will require your tenant to confirm that they have your verbal consent for NBN Co to install this new equipment, including where the equipment is located. Please talk to your tenant about whether you consent to the installation of the equipment, and your preferred location for the equipment. You may also want to be present on the day of installation (or available by phone) in case NBN Co can t install the equipment in your preferred location or if the installation of the equipment in your preferred location will incur additional charges. What is the NBN? The National Broadband Network (NBN) is a government initiative to ensure all Australians can choose high-speed broadband. A government-owned company called NBN Co has been created to build, install, and maintain the NBN. The NBN will be built on a region-by-region basis across the country and is scheduled to be completed by On completion, fibre will reach 93% of Australian premises. The remaining 7% of premises will be served by either fixed wireless or satellite technologies. The NBN is a wholesale-only network, which means NBN Co does not sell directly to consumers. That s where we come in

Also a fibre optic cable from the street will be connected to the Premised Connection Device (NBN PCD) on an external wall of the property via either above or below ground cabling. At a second appointment, the Telstra technician will bring with them the BigPond Velocity Home Network Gateway and professionally install this device and connect it to the NBN NTD, connecting the customer s Telstra services to the fibre network. 4 What s included in an NBN Co installation Things to think about before the NBN Co appointment The NBN Co installer will install the NBN Co equipment both outside and inside the premises, which will enable Telstra to connect Telstra services to the fibre network. In most situations, as a part of a standard installation, NBN Co will install up to 60 metres of fibre cabling from the boundary of the property to the NBN Premises Connection Device (NBN PCD) and up to 40 metres of cabling from the NBN PCD to the NBN Network Termination Device (NBN NTD) inside the house. There are a number of factors which may mean the installation is non-standard, including if the installation is complex or difficult; if there are obstacles, dangers or safety concerns during the installation; or if additional equipment (e.g. more than one cable from the street) is needed. The attending NBN Co technician will discuss requirements with your tenant and advise if any additional charges will apply. NBN Co has not yet determined how multi-dwelling units (e.g. a block of apartments) will be handled, so please speak to our Telstra Fibre Connection Specialists if you own a premise in a multi-dwelling unit. Placement of the NBN Co equipment When the NBN Co installer arrives at your property, the tenant should advise them where the NBN Co equipment should be installed. As each home is different, the NBN Co installer will assess whether the installation required is either standard or non-standard. If you or your tenant is unhappy with the NBN Co installer s suggested location, they can ask for the equipment to be installed elsewhere during the installation appointment. However, this may result in a non-standard installation by NBN Co and/or Telstra. You might want to agree on a couple of possible locations for the equipment with your tenant, or be available to discuss the final positioning of the equipment on installation day. If the installation at your premises is non-standard, the NBN Co installer will provide your tenant with a quote for additional services changes and/ or materials. The NBN Co installer will ask your tenant for their consent before starting a non-standard installation. The charges for this additional work will appear on the customer s Telstra bill, and they are liable for payment. For a non-standard installation, the appointment may need to be rescheduled. If so, the Telstra Fibre Connection Specialist will be in touch with your tenant to make a new appointment. Before the NBN Co installation appointment, it s important to think about the location of the NBN Co equipment inside the property. We advise you discuss with your tenant where you d like the NBN Co equipment to be located. Here are some points to consider: 1 The NBN NTD should be positioned close to the main computer and the BigPond Velocity Home Network Gateway. To achieve best performance, the NBN Co equipment should be located in the same room as the BigPond Velocity Home Network Gateway wherever possible. For example, in the study close to the computer or the existing broadband modem. 2 The NBN NTD must be located inside the house, not in a separate building like a shed or garage. 3 The NBN NTD and the NBN PSU will need to be located together, within three metres of a dedicated 240V power point. This can t be an extension lead or power board. 4 Your tenant will need easy access to the NBN NTD so they can check the indicator lights if there s a problem. 5 Ensure the equipment is not exposed to extreme temperatures, dampness, steam, dirt or dust. 6 Ensure the equipment will have adequate ventilation space around it, and ensure it s in a low-traffic area to avoid it getting bumped or damaged. 7 Think safety please ensure all the equipment is installed out of reach of young children or pets. 8 The installation of the NBN Co equipment is a permanent connection please consider how and where voice and internet services may be needed in the future
