1 Technical Bulletin Bulletin Number: Released: 16/01/2006 A Guide To Installing Anti-Mask Detectors The aim of this Bulletin is to provide instruction on the correct method of wiring anti-mask detectors, to the PX/QX control panels. This is in accordance with the requirements of EN50131 (Grade 3), where this technology must be used. To aid understanding of the two different wiring styles that are possible, this document will provide support in pictorial form so that it can be used as a field instruction as well as a Technical Bulletin. The diagrams provided below are duplicated on the next page, to show the same styles when installing a detector that is not provided with internal resistors. Wiring Style #1 (2 Circuits per Detector V12AM / DTX with Internal Resistors) With the internal resistors enabled (see table below), the wiring is relatively simple. The only external components required are the 2 resistors to operate the Aux output on a separate circuit. The main output (Alarm) of the V12AM / DTX operates through the internal resistor network. Option Switch V12AM OFF ON ON DTX OFF ON ON Wiring Style #2 (1 Circuit per Detector V12AM / DTX with Internal Resistors) ** For the simplest wiring method, use the V12AM / DTX detector with all of the internal resistors switched in. This eliminates the need to fit any external components. As can be seen from the diagram here, the simple addition of a Wire Link allows the full range of detector states to be presented on to a single circuit on the PX/QX control panel. Option Switch V12AM ON ON ON DTX ON ON ON ** It should be noted that Wiring Style #2 in both cases requires the use of a new feature in PX/QX control panels, called Fault EOL. Programmable as an individual circuit option, the system expects to see this new 3-resistor network when operated with either a V12AM or DTX. This option is available in V3.20 and V4 firmware for the PX/QX control panels. Page 1 of 5

2 Wiring Style #1 (2 Circuits per Detector Astra Elite AM with External Resistors) This method of wiring uses 2 separate circuits to monitor all of the conditions possible, on an anti-mask detector. The first circuit is connected in the same way as any other detector, allowing the device to signal Alarm/Tamper using the 2 x 8k2 resistor network. A separate circuit is then used to signal the Mask/Aux alarm only on an additional pair of 8k2 resistors. Since the PX/QX uses 3 connections for 2 circuits (sharing a common return path), only 3 wires need to be used for both of the circuits. Wiring Style #2 (1 Circuit per Detector Astra Elite AM with External Resistors) ** Since the launch of V3.20 and V4 firmware for the PX/QX control panels it has been possible to monitor all of the states of an anti-mask detector (Alarm, Tamper and Aux/Trouble), on a single circuit. Using 3 resistors (rather than the usual 2) the detector can be wired to signal all of the required conditions. This reduces the number of circuits required on a control panel, when installing to Grade 3 of EN ** As with the previous section, Wiring Style #2 in each case requires the use of a new feature in PX/QX control panels, called Fault EOL. Programmable as an individual circuit option, the system expects to see this new 3-resistor network when operated with an Astra Elite AM. For a summary of the resistances that can be seen when operating the two wiring styles, refer to the table below: Standard 2-Resistor Wiring New 3-Resistor Wiring Condition Resistance Condition Resistance Clear 4k1 Clear 4k1 Alarm 8k2 Alarm 8k2 Tamper Open / Short Tamper Open/Short Mask 12k3 Alarm+Mask 16k4 Table 1 Resistor Wiring Comparison Page 2 of 5

3 Test and Control Inputs The Astra Elite AM, V12AM and DTX detectors have multi-function inputs that are used under certain circumstances. As with any Technical Bulletin that provides additional information on products, please always refer to existing Engineering manuals for more precise detail. Test Input This connection has a dual function, and will depend on options enabled through the switches on the detectors. In most cases the Test connection is used to remotely enable the Alarm LED on the detector. This is done by applying +12v to the connection, when required (generally when the control panel is in Walk Test mode). When this connection is then returned to normal (0v or disconnected), the detector performs a remote Self Test to ensure reliability. For the Astra Elite AM the remote Self Test is available at all times. For the V12AM however it will only operate when Switch-7 is ON (High Security Mode) and in the case of DTX, Switch-4 ON (Fault Output). As also indicated in Table-2, returning the Test connection to 0v causes an Astra Elite AM to re-calibrate the anti-mask technology. Control Input Applying +12v to the Control connection will indicate to the unit that the control panel has been armed. If an alarm is then triggered, it will only be indicated on the unit LED when this input is returned to 0v, while the Test connection is also low (0v). This is the method of alarm latching used on a number of previous detector models. When this input is forced to +12v (high), the anti-mask technology of the unit is disabled, along with any LED indication. The only time that normal operation is resumed, is when the Control connection is returned to 0v (or disconnected). In addition to this, when the Control line returns to normal the detector automatically recalibrates the signals used to operate the anti-mask technology (except DTX ). If at that point there are problems, the detector will indicate this with a fault response as detailed in the installation manual. Astra Elite AM V12AM DTX Control Input Test Input High (+12v) Low (0v) High (+12v) Low (0v) Enables alarm Indicates any Enables alarm LED Disables LED and latch mode alarm activations for Walk Test forces Self Test with Also disables from previous anti-mask and mode and forces Alarm relay. 4 Important Considerations When a remote Self Test is initiated (and re-calibration of the anti-mask Astra Elite AM only), it is important that there is no movement in front of the device for 20 seconds. If the test is interrupted because of localised movement, it will fail. If the detector installed is an Astra Elite AM then the effect is not significant, as the failure will provide no indication on any of the available outputs (Alarm, Tamper or Aux). If however the detector being used is a V12AM or DTX, the Aux output is triggered to indicate the failure. Depending on how the system is then wired (see earlier), this may effect how the control panel operates from that point. To clear any remote Self Test failures simply repeat the process, and carry out another remote Self Test. Installation of an Anti-Mask Detector Both the Astra Elite AM and V12AM products use active Infrared technology to check for attempts to mask the detector (often called active anti-mask ). This involves the use of optical components that monitor the levels of Infrared on or around the unit itself. For this reason it is vital that special care is taken when choosing a mounting position, and when final commissioning is carried out on the site. Consider the following: The detector should not be mounted at a lower height than specified in any installation/engineering documentation. If installed below this recommended height the detector is potentially in close proximity to both people, and any high furniture/objects that could be placed or moved into position. This may result in detection of a mask condition, at inappropriate or unexpected times. The V12AM and Astra Elite AM both require the anti-mask technology to be calibrated, before reliable operation can be guaranteed. While the V12AM calibrates by taking the Control input low or toggling the position of Switch-7, the Astra Elite AM recalibrates more often (Control or Test input going low ). It is therefore important that the cover is securely in place once the re-calibration has been initiated. The engineer may also cycle the detector power (from the source PSU), and allow the devices to go through their initial power-up calibration process. The larger the object, the more Infrared is reflected which increases the possibility of an anti-mask alarm being generated. It is therefore vital that the customer does not (or cannot) place objects directly underneath these types of detector. Examples of items that can potentially cause problems for anti-mask technology include; stacked pallets, ATM s, high storage cabinets etc DTX uses microwave technology for anti-mask detection which is also used by Astra Elite AM to compliment the active Infrared technology. With these products, microwave anti-mask technology is only effected by movement not the placement of nearby static objects such as furniture. In accordance with the recommendations of EN50131, large objects should not be placed within 1m of any of the detectors discussed in this bulletin. This is to ensure that coverage patterns and detection ranges are not effected, or reduced. Page 4 of 5

5 Control Panel Programming for Anti-Mask Detectors To comply with EN50131 for Grade 3 installations, the control panel being used must be supplied with V3.20 or V4 firmware. This then allows the engineer to also use the Fault EOL option to simplify the wiring method and operate using Wiring Style #2. If this option is not enabled, the anti-mask output from a detector should be wired to a separate circuit for monitoring, using Wiring Style #1. When operating the new 3-resistor network there are new status levels to consider, as shown by the information in Table-1. It is therefore important that the option mentioned above is enabled, so that the PX/QX control panel operates correctly. If the option is not enabled the new resistor readings will generate tamper alarms, on circuit inputs. This is especially true for any anti-mask alarms signalled, since these introduce the additional (3 rd ) resistor that changes the overall network. This bulletin is intended as a guide to the installation and use of anti-mask detectors, and should always be used in conjunction with existing engineering documentation.
