3 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP 3 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP NOVEMBER 2016 LYON, FRANCE The UNMAS-GICHD Technology Workshop is the premiere event for technology developers, humanitarian and mine action actors. This event is an opportunity to meet and learn from each other about the latest technological innovation and research as well as to discuss challenges, concerns and opportunities from industry innovators and experts. The theme of this year s workshop is Harnessing Mobile Technology: Opportunities and Challenges. This event will bring together developers, researchers and operators from all over the world to discuss the use of mobile technology in humanitarian mine action operations. It will explore the future use of technology and share challenges faced by colleagues using these technologies in daily operations. OBJECTIVES: Increase awareness among humanitarian and mine action actors of the range of available and upcoming mobile systems Increase understanding of mobile systems operational potential and limitations Connect users of mobile technology with suppliers and developers The workshop includes presentations, panel discussions, a developer exhibition space as well as hands-on field exercises. It is hosted by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) with support from Handicap International (HI) and the NOMAD consortium.

6 6 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP SPEAKERS GUY RHODES GICHD Guy Rhodes joined the GICHD in As Director of Operations, he oversees global programming responsibilities. Prior to joining the GICHD, Guy Rhodes spent sixteen years working in conflict and post-conflict settings in South Asia, South East Asia and Africa. This included the management and coordination of a complex NGO consortium and UN alliance arrangements across multiple sectors. His career, though focused on leadership and management of mine action programmes, has been complemented by broader management experience in relief activities, rehabilitation and socio-economic development programmes (Solidar INGO Consortium Country Representative Sri Lanka). He also worked as a consultant to the GICHD, the Survey Action Centre (SAC) and the UNDP - conducting research & evaluations in Kosovo, Yemen, Angola and Laos. Guy Rhodes holds a PhD in Earth Sciences from Southampton University, STEPHEN PRITCHARD UNMAS Stephen Pritchard is a Deputy to the Chief of the Programmes, Planning and Management section of UNMAS New York. Prior to UN HQ, Steve consulted and managed programmes for several UN, non-profit, and commercial organisations in Mozambique, Egypt, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Kosovo, Laos, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Chad, Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Cote d Ivoire, Somalia, and South Sudan, and shorter assignments in others. He has two Masters degrees and has yet to use either, and has aspirations of becoming a technology entrepreneur. He lives in Virginia, USA, with

7 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP 7 RICHARD BOULTER UNMAS Richard Boulter is the Global Weapons and Ammunition Management Advisor to UNMAS. He first cleared land mines in Cambodia in 1993 and has subsequently worked continuously in mine action and Weapons and Ammunition management roles across 23 countries. He has been a member of the IMAS Review Board for ten years, and in 2013 was awarded the United Nations Secretary General s Award for Innovation. He has degrees in Engineering and Business OLIVIER COTTRAY GICHD Olivier Cottray joined the GICHD in January 2012, initially as the Division s Information Services Coordinator. As Head of the Information Management Division, he is now in charge of managing the team that provides Information Management capacity development and technical support to the mine action community. Prior to joining the GICHD Olivier worked in humanitarian emergencies, running Geographic Information Systems (GIS) support cells in UN and NGOs field operations. He started working in humanitarian GIS in 2002, when he helped found the NGO MapAction, a rapid response organisation that provides immediate IM/GIS support in the weeks following a crisis. He has set up and run emergency GIS cells in a number of countries, including Pakistan, Lebanon, Colombia, Haiti, Sudan, DRC and

8 8 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP INNA CRUZ GICHD Inna Cruz joined the GICHD in September Currently an Information Management Advisor, her expertise lies in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, aerial imagery, cartography and geodetics. One of her key projects is the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for mapping and reporting in mine action. She is also the country focal point for support to Russian-speaking users, Eastern Europe and Turkey. Prior to joining the GICHD she worked as a consultant for two projects for the United Nations Environment Programme, using remote sensing and GIS ERIK DE BRUN RIPPLE DESIGN Erik de Brun is a Partner and Co-founder of Ripple Design. His focus in mine action is on mechanical systems, software tools, operational efficiency, and new technology. Prior to founding Ripple Design, de Brun designed and tested armored vehicles with BAE Systems and V-22 Osprey flight-control software with Boeing Rotorcraft. He holds a M.S.E. in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.S.E in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University. MARTIN ENGELS ESRI As part of the Nonprofit & Global Organizations team, Martin is Esri s focal point for the United Nations organizations based in Europe. Since the end of 2015, he is also taking care of Global International organizations and global NGOs. Martin has been working for WFP and FAO between 1991 and Since 1999 he is working in the private sector for several different GIS companies. He has an MSc in Land and Water Management and an MBA in Environmental

9 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP 9 OLIVIER DEMARS GICHD Olivier Demars joined the GICHD Information Management division in March 2016 as Advisor, IMSMA Systems Development. He coordinates the development cycle of the IMSMA system from the management of the tendering process to the follow-through of software and technical development. He also provides Information Management support and capacity development to national partners in Latin America and in some francophone countries. Prior to joining the GICHD, Olivier Demars worked for many years supporting biometrics governmental systems in more than 20 countries in both the private and public sectors. More recently, he was the Information Manager for UNMAS in Somalia, providing IM support to all the mine action actors in Somaliland, Puntland and South Central JOHN FARDOULIS UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL John Fardoulis is an Unmanned Aerial System (drone) expert, currently employed as a Research Associate at the University of Bristol in the UK. He has designed and built more than 50 different machines and conducted fieldwork using drones in areas ranging from mapping contaminated radioactive areas in Japan, through to aerial archaeology surveys in the Mediterranean. One of the main aims of his current project is to identify ways that UAS can help the humanitarian demining and ERW sector and is looking to partner with demining organisations to run

10 10 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP MARK FRANKLIN SAAB MIDDLE EAST Mark joined the British Army in 1987 and spent 23 years as a soldier and officer in the Royal Engineers, serving in Germany, UK and Northern Ireland. He had operational tours in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan and a few tours as a Royal Engineers Search Advisor within the EOD community. Mark was involved with the design and implementation of the Saab Counter Improvised Explosive Device Simulation Capability (CCT) and headed up the team that subsequently trained over 100,000 UK and US personnel for Op Herrick VICTOR KIMATHI IMMAP Victor is the Information Management Process Review Manager at immap, an international not-for-profit non-governmental organization that provides targeted information management support to partners responding to complex humanitarian and development challenges. He is currently on mission responding to the Syria Crisis, and has spent many years in conflict zones, aiding humanitarian organisations with their information management practices and PIOTR LOJ LOJKE.PL Piotr is a founder of Virtual Dream Foundation. Virtual Reality Specialist and promotor of social potential of new technologies. Since 2014 he is producing 360 videos and developing VR applications to spread awareness and help in social exclusion problem. He also is an expert in immersive VR features for support of humanitarian organizations such as the ICRC and

11 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP 11 LAHIRU JAYATILAKA RED LOTUS TECHNOLOGIES INC. Lahiru Jayatilaka is the Co-Founder and CEO of Red Lotus Technologies Inc., a technology company that designs and manufactures training products for Counter-IED and Counter-Mine operations. Lahiru earned a B.A. in Computer Science from Harvard University, where he was awarded the Hoopes Prize for his research on novel visual support systems for landmine clearance. Lahiru was a PhD. Candidate in Computer Science at Stanford University before starting Red Lotus Technologies (RLT) with funding support from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Over a four-year time span at RLT, Lahiru has led the development of his research work into a commercial training product that will improve the safety and efficacy of handheld detector-based explosives detection. This training product is currently being procured by the U.S. SULAIMAN MUKAHHAL GICHD Sulaiman Mukahhal joined the GICHD Information Management Division in January 2016 as Information Management Advisor with a focus on mobile IMSMA applications. He is coordinating the development of the Mine Action Reporting System (MARS) as well as providing oversight to related developments. He is also the country focal point for support to Arabic-speaking users in the Middle East and North Africa. Prior to joining GICHD, Sulaiman Mukahhal worked with different humanitarian missions focusing on supporting relief and mine actions efforts in conflict and post conflict zones. He has been involved in numerous assessment initiatives and investigative missions, and over the last few years he has been extremely active in efforts to integrate information management and technology best practice in advocacy of optimized operational performance and reporting in the

12 12 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP GEORDIE PALMER WHAT3WORDS Geordie Palmer is an entrepreneur who works with international development partners at what3words. After graduating from Bristol University in French and Spanish, the first thing Geordie did was drive to Mongolia. He got as far as Kazakhstan. Not disheartened by the adventure, he went on to found a backpacking app providing off-the-beaten track suggestions and tips. After selling the company, Geordie worked at a VC firm uncovering some of Europe s future technology giants before joining the what3words team to help grow their partnerships around the MOHAMMAD KABIR RAHIMI UNMAS Kabir is the Information Management System for Mine Action (IMSMA) Officer for UNMAS in South Sudan. Having worked in this field since 1999, Kabir has developed expertise in a range of information management tasks and contexts. Starting with the Landmine Impact Survey (LIS) in Yemen, Kabir went on to develop the IMSMA for Iraq, before rolling out the system in Sudan and South Sudan. In each location, Kabir has developed context specific tools to enhance the utility of IMSMA and continues to seek ways to improve this vital ADAM WARREN VISMO Adam is the Business Development Manager at Vismo, a GPS tracking application designed to locate individuals travelling the world using their smartphone, tablet or personal GPS Trackers. Vismo uses GPS and other technologies to provide the best GPS tracking updates even indoors. Geo-fence and panic button alerts allow your security team to track, protect and respond to employees as they travel to high-risk areas.

13 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP 13 WALEED ROY KISR Waleed Roy is the Research Specialist at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. Currently, he is working as a Technical Advisor to the Director General. With over 20 years of experience, he is an expert in the application of new technologies to the needs of environmental research. He is involved in numerous projects that focus on the assessment of environmental damages, assessing and mapping the ecology and environment of Islands in Kuwait and Renewable Energy projects. He has authored and contributed to 4 books and 40 research papers on various aspects of the Kuwait HOWARD RUDAT MAPPS, INC. Howard Rudat is a retired U.S. Army Colonel who served as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officer in the United States Army for 30 years. He served at all levels from the company to the Army and Department of Defense staffs. After retiring, Howard became the chief executive of MAPPS, Inc., a service-disabled veteran-owned small business focused on identifying and integrating emerging technologies to support organizations achieved their

14 14 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP EMMANUEL SAUVAGE HANDICAP INTERNATIONAL Emmanuel Sauvage is currently the Head of armed violence reduction technical unit for Handicap International. He has an Industrial logistics management background and enrolled the humanitarian action in 1994 in ex-yugoslavia. He first joined Handicap International in For the past 15 years, he has been holding senior and advisory positions for Handicap International and other international organisations/agencies in the field of humanitarian mine action and armed violence reduction directly exposed to information management, quality, land release (clearance and surveys), risk education/management, victim assistance and BORIS WORTMANN INZENTIVE Boris is the inventor of DEDUCT Demining, a offline map application for humanitarian demining. His speciality is to manage and improve operational efficiency in development situations. He worked many years as a senior consultant within lean management before he was responsible for developing large e-business applications. Today he combines his operational experience from various branches with the ability to develop visual software solutions. He is an expert to understand the customer domain, map the information flows in an organisation and find simple and workable solution adapted to the local conditions. Boris is the initiator of a STRATECUTON network based on the believe that a good strategy is nothing worth without good execution. Boris holds an M.Sc in International Technology Planning and an

15 6 TH MINE ACTION TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP 15 ORGANISERS Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) The GICHD is an expert organisation working to reduce the impact of mines, cluster munitions and other explosive hazards, in close partnership with mine action organisations and other human security actors. The GICHD supports the ultimate goals of mine action: saving lives, returning land to productive use and promoting development. Based at the Maison de la paix in Geneva, and founded in 1998, it employs around 55 staff members from over 15 nations. This makes the GICHD a unique and international centre of mine action expertise and knowledge. United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) UNMAS collaborates with 11 UN departments, agencies, programmes and funds to ensure an effective, proactive and coordinated response to the problems of landmines and explosive remnants of war, including cluster munitions. UNMAS was established in 1997, by the General Assembly, to serve as the UN coordinator for mine action and to support the UN s vision of «a world free of the threat of landmines and unexploded ordnance, where individuals and communities live in a safe environment conducive to development, and where mine survivors are fully integrated into their societies.»
