8 UK Supreme Court Law library Located in Westminster, London, the Westminster Guildhall is of historic interest dating back to The building was closed in March 2007 for refurbishment and conversion to the United Kingdom Supreme Court. As part of the these works The Ministry of Justice required a 21st century fire protection system to protect the nationally important central law library within the main building. A key requirement of the design was that the fire protection system should be largely unseen, blending in with the antique style library furniture and bookshelves. Live fire tests with the Hydramist system demonstrated that stored materials suffered very minimal water damage and it was noted that the Hydramist system provided a greater level of fire suppression than other competing suppression systems. The requirement for minimal aesthetic impact of the system was easily satisfied by incorporating the nozzles within an existing suspended light rail. The Hydramist system supply piping was hidden above the bookcases and behind architectural wall mountings. The overall project Architects, Feilden & Mawson, were impressed by the experience and data that Hydramist Limited were able to provide to ensure that this project was carried out smoothly and to the entire satisfaction of all parties. Following competitive evaluation and extensive testing, Hydramist was selected for this project. 08 T: +44 (0) Case Studies
9 HM Prison Service The HM Prison Service commissioned a set of tests to determine the effectiveness of the traditional hose reels which, to date, had been installed in prisons across England and Wales throughout the 20th century. During these tests it was observed that the conventional hose reels did not effectively fight the fire and that smoke from the fire presented a greater risk to both the cell occupants and rescuers than the fire itself. The use of conventional hose reels also created extensive water damage and extended turnaround time of the affected cell in some cases the cell below as well. Knowing that Hydramist systems offer a far more efficient way of using water to fight fires, the HM Prison Service asked us to participate in a series of evaluation trials to determine the effectiveness of Hydramist systems, these were held at the world renowned Buildings Research Establishment (BRE). The BRE test criteria established were: maintain a tenable atmosphere for a period of 20 minutes when fire tested in accordance with the specifications discharge a relatively small amount of water deliver a spray of water mist with sufficient momentum to discharge droplets to the back wall of a cell The inundation was to last for 5 minutes after pre-burn and operation of internal cell fire detection systems, then a simulated rescue of an inmate involving opening the door for a set period of one minute would occur, followed by re-closing the door and waiting 10 minutes during which time the fire was not to resume. Hydramist tested the products as follows: Mobile 8 and Hosereel mounted hand held lances Fixed in cell nozzle with glass frangible bulb operation using a locally mounted pump unit In all tests Hydramist : Successfully extinguished the fire at the first attempt Dramatically reduced cell temperature, toxic gases and smoke to tenable levels Ensured sufficient oxygen was available to sustain life throughout the cell Note: During the rescue and ten minute waiting period after inundation that the fire did not resume; temperatures and toxic gases in the cell continued to fall, remaining well below levels that could be harmful to life. Since successfully passing these tests Hydramist systems have become the equipment of choice for The HM prison Service and are installed in over 150 prisons. W: Case Studies 09
10 Network Rail Archive Store The very latest Hydramist technology for fire fighting has been used to ensure historic and valuable documents held in the network rail central archive store are protected by the most effective and efficient means. The bespoke warehouse archive facility contains an irreplaceable collection of rail-related documents dating back well over a hundred years-using The Hydramist system network rail knew that they would be protected by a 21st century fire protection and detection system. A requirement of the design was that the fire protection system should protect each individual storage area separately and be able to detect smoke before it was visible to the human eye. The Hydramist high pressure system was linked to VESdA (Very Early Smoke detection Aspirator) detection in the archive areas and conventional point type detection in the escape routes, corridors and stairs. It was observed that fires started in various positions within a scaled section of a typical archive store were quickly controlled by the Hydramist system preventing the fire from spreading and containing the smoke to the affected area only. Additionally it was observed that the precious archive documents stored adjacent to the fire source were safe throughout the tests as there was zero water penetration to the document containers. Crucially, the tests showed that this was the right solution for the archive being both effective at fighting fire and safe for the document storage application. A series of fire tests were designed and carried out by Hydramist Limited in accordance with the guide-lines of NFPA750 and the specific requirement of Network Rail under the supervision of their designated fire risk consultant. 10 T: +44 (0) Case Studies
11 Commercial Kitchen Systems Until now restaurant fryer fire protection systems have traditionally used dry powder or wet chemical fire suppression systems as a fire suppression medium. However these traditional systems can leave a large amount of potentially hazardous residues from the fire suppression agent on the catering equipment which must be cleaned up before cooking can re-commence. This leaves a restaurant without a kitchen during this period. Using atomised normal drinking water the Hydramist 15AMPU high pressure Watermist fire extinguishing systems act quickly to extinguish the fire and prevent re-ignition by cooling the oil and hot metal surfaces. The Hydramist systems very fine droplets of water turn to steam upon contact with the flames. The steam created then smothers the fire by displacing oxygen at the flame front to extinguish the fire. After extinguishment the mist evaporates latent heat away to prevent re-ignition. As the droplets are very fine no water can come into contact with the oil until the oil temperature is below 100c removing any risk of splashing. To verify fire performance, safety, and system durability the Hydramist 15AMPU system has successfully completed LPCB LPS1223 accreditation carried out and witnessed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). Hydramist is the first high pressure Watermist product in the world to be included in the highly regarded LPCB Red Book for LPS1223 approved Kitchen Suppression Systems. Hydramist 15AMPU Systems have been installed for many well-known and prestigious clients including: Greggs the Bakers Rocco Forte hotels Sheffield University ITV KP Foods Brighton and Hove FC Norwich Open Academy Browns hotel of Mayfair Sanderson Hotel The Hydramist 15AMPU Kitchen Suppression System offers a cost effective fast reacting solution to this fire risk. Using a wall mounted Hydramist pump also eliminates storage issues for the fire suppression equipment. To see the 15AMPU in action visit After activation next to no clean-up is necessary as the extinguishing agent is clean water allowing the kitchen to be back in operation extremely quickly.
