6 Important considerations All LightwaveRF products can be legally DIY installed in your own home; however, if in doubt, always consult a qualified electrician. It is important to install this product in accordance with these instructions. Failure to do so may void your warranty. If conducting an insulation resistance test, any hard-wired LightwaveRF devices must be disconnected from the mains, or damage to the unit may occur. 2-way 2-way or multi-way switching (using more than one switch on a circuit) can be performed using Lightwave dimmers, but you must always have one standard Lightwave dimmer (such as this LW440) and up to 6 corresponding Lightwave 2-way dimmers (such as the LW450) on the circuit. Intermediate switches are not required. Never mix standard light-switches with Lightwave ones.

8 2 Choose your lamps

9 Compatibility Choosing fully tested compatible lamps (bulbs) is very important and will ensure that you get the best experience from your Lightwave lighting setup. LEDs LightwaveRF 400 series dimmers are designed to work with the majority of dimmable LEDs, but, as every lamp can behave differently, it is advisable to choose variants that have been tested and proven to work well. If you plan to use LEDs, we strongly recommend that you consult our compatibility chart (see www. lightwaverf.com). The LEDs must be dimmable (not all varieties are), and you should not exceed the maximum loading recommendations (typically 70W) provided on the compatibility chart or damage could occur.

10 Lightwave dimmers are compatible with: Most dimmable LED lamps (see lightwaverf.com for compatibility) Mains voltage incandescent lamps (max 250W / 210W 3 & 4 gang) GU10 / HI spot halogen lamps (max 250W / 210W 3 & 4 gang) Dimmable electronic transformers (max 250W / 210W 3 & 4 gang) Inductive transformers (40 170VA max) Lightwave dimmers are not compatible with: Wirewound transformers (generally older style) Electric motors Non dimmable LEDs CFLs and CFL tubes Incandescent lamps under 20W

14 4 Install the dimmer

15 Take care Carefully follow the instructions in this section in order to install the Dimmer. Please remember that live electricity is dangerous. Do not take any risks. If in any doubt, consult a qualified professional. For other advice, please contact our dedicated technical support team on Remove the existing switch Turn off the mains power. Unscrew the existing light-switch and remove the wires. It is often a good idea to take a quick photo of the existing wiring configuration. This can help you to remember which wires connect to which terminals if there are more than two, or if they are not distinctly labelled. The existing wiring should be colour coded and arranged as per the wiring diagram on the next page, however, please be aware that not all existing wiring will conform to this standard and may differ.

16 Remove the faceplate Remove the faceplate from the LightwaveRF dimmer by carefully inserting a screwdriver into the small slot located at the bottom edge of the cover. Install the dimmer Carefully wire the dimmer as shown in the diagram. Be aware that existing cables can vary in colour and may not always be correctly labelled. If in any doubt, always consult a qualified electrician. Replace the faceplate by hooking it onto the top edge of the dimmer and clipping in the bottom. Check the wiring and load When connecting a multi-gang dimmer, the master 1 gang (denoted on the rear) must always be connected with a load (i.e. a lamp) in order for the unit to operate correctly. Remember not to exceed 210W incandescent load and to only use recommended dimmable LED lamps (70W max).

This should be brown or red in colour. The Earth wire connects to terminal in back box (can be capped off instead if no terminal present). Switched live wire out. This should be blue or black in colour. Signal connection for use with a Lightwave 2-Way dimmer. This terminal is low voltage; do NOT connect to live mains or damage will occur.

18 5 Adjust the range

19 On initial setup, Lightwave dimmers are pre-programmed to allow for a moderate range of dimming for any connected lamps. This smaller range maximises compatibility with LED lamps. If the LEDs perform normally at this setting (most cases), then the dimming range can be increased (if desired) in 5 increments using the method on the following pages.

20 1. On the Dimmer Switch, press and hold down both the on and off buttons until the blue and amber LEDs flash alternately then release them. The dimmer switch is now in linking mode. 2. Tap the (top) on button twice to enter dimming range setup. The blue LED will flash to indicate that the setup menu has been accessed. The dimmer will automatically turn on at a high level of brightness. This indicates that the smallest (most stable) dimming range is currently selected. 3. Tap the off button to gradually increase the dimming range (indicated by the incremental decrease in lamp light level). Keep going until flicker is observed. At this point, return to the previous stable increment (optimum level) by pressing the on button. 4. Once the optimum level has been achieved, save the setting and leave setup by holding the on & off buttons until the blue LED flashes quickly.

22 6 Link the dimmer

23 Which devices can be linked? The Dimmer can be linked to the LightwaveRF App, or any other Lightwave controller including the Handheld Remote, Wire-free switch, Scene Selector, Mood controller, Mood remote, Movement sensor or Magnetic Switch. This allows the Dimmer to be controlled remotely within the home, and away from home in the case of the App. Linking the Dimmer On the Dimmer switch, press and hold down both the on and off buttons until the blue and amber LEDs flash alternately then release them. The Dimmer switch is now in linking mode. Using the LightwaveRF App or another LightwaveRF controller, press the button you want to link to (the App instructions will guide you through this). The blue light on the Dimmer switch will flash to confirm that it is now linked to the App. Repeat the same process to unlink the device.

24 Clearing the memory To clear the memory completely, enter linking mode, and then hold down the off button until the blue and amber LEDs flash simultaneously. Release the button and tap (don t hold) it. The amber LED will flash to confirm that the memory has been cleared. Locking the Dimmer Switch The Dimmer can be locked using the App so that the manual buttons will not operate it. If it is locked on, then the Dimmer will not turn off manually. If it is locked off, it will be possible to turn the dimmer on, but it will automatically turn off again after five minutes. A locked dimmer is signified by a slow flashing amber LED. To lock/unlock the Dimmer, press the lock button on the Smartphone App. If the Dimmers can be manually reset by turning of mains power to the circuit for a period of 30 seconds.
