13 Chapter 1 Introduction Describes SPECTRUM/Tivoli Gateway features and discusses how SANM can effect Gateway performance. Overview The SPECTRUM/Tivoli Gateway (Gateway) integrates the network alarm-management capabilities of the SPECTRUM Enterprise Management System (EMS) with the systems event-management capabilities of the Tivoli Management Environment. The Gateway is the mechanism that enables event/alarm sharing between SPECTRUM and Tivoli. For example, with the Gateway installed on both systems you can view and respond to Tivoli system events (such as exceeded disk usage thresholds and workstation reboots) from SPECTRUM s Enterprise Alarm Manager. Likewise, you can view and respond to SPECTRUM network alarms (such as switch or router failures) from the Tivoli Enterprise Console. Gateway Features Gateway features include: Solaris and Windows NT compatibility. See the SPECTRUM/Tivoli Gateway Software Release Notice 5.0 for information on specific platform requirements. Multiple alarm/event sharing configuration options. You can configure the Gateway for either bilateral or unilateral alarm/event sharing between the SPECTRUM and Tivoli management systems: - Tivoli events to SPECTRUM - SPECTRUM alarms to Tivoli E4 1-1

14 If SANM Is Installed on SPECTRUM - Tivoli events to SPECTRUM and SPECTRUM alarms to Tivoli Cross-system sharing of detailed alarm/event information. Cross-system alarm/event processing: - Acknowledge alarms/events from the other system on your system. - Clear Tivoli alarms in SPECTRUM and close non-critical SPECTRUM events in Tivoli. SPECTRUM Alarm Notification Manager (SANM) compatibility. You can use SANM to specify the types of SPECTRUM alarm notifications you want the Gateway to pass to Tivoli. See If SANM Is Installed on SPECTRUM on Page 1-2. If SANM Is Installed on SPECTRUM SANM (SPECTRUM Alarm Notification Manager) enhances the capabilities of SPECTRUM alarm-notification applications such as AlarmNotifier, ARS Gateway, and the SPECTRUM/Tivoli Gateway. These applications are referred to as SANM-compatible applications. SANM enables you to associate alarm-filtering policies with these applications for the purpose of restricting or refining the type or volume of alarm information transmitted to them from SPECTRUM, and thus to the other applications or systems they integrate with. For example, if a SANM policy specifying that only critical alarms generated for a particular type of router is associated with the Gateway, only alarms that meet that policy s criteria will be transmitted by the Gateway from SPECTRUM to Tivoli. A SANM policy associated with the Gateway does not, however, restrict the types of events that flow from Tivoli to SPECTRUM, nor does it determine what types of alarms the SPECTRUM Enterprise Alarm Manager posts. Note that because the Gateway is a SANM-compatible application, it is, like other SANM-compatible applications, automatically registered with SANM and associated with a default SANM policy when it is installed. Because the default policy is a null policy a policy without any filtering capability it will not restrict the Gateway from accessing SPECTRUM alarm information and transmitting it to Tivoli; all alarms within the scope defined by the Gateway will be transmitted to Tivoli. If, however, the default policy has been modified for the purpose of providing it with filtering capabilities, it will prevent the Gateway from accessing and transmitting to Tivoli SPECTRUM alarms that do not meet the policy s criteria. By keeping the default policy a null policy, you can avoid this problem. If, on the other hand, you want to filter alarms sent to Tivoli, you can specify and associate a policy with the Gateway. 17 Chapter 2 Installation Describes how to extract and install Gateway software for SPECTRUM and Tivoli and check the installation. Overview The Gateway product installs on the Solaris and Windows NT platforms for the SPECTRUM and Tivoli management systems. This chapter describes how to install Gateway software for the SPECTRUM and Tivoli systems after you have downloaded either the Spec_Tivoli_Gateway.tar.Z file for Solaris or the Spec_Tivoli_Gateway.zip file for Windows NT to the Tivoli Enterprise Console machine running the corresponding platform. The installation process described in this chapter comprises four steps: 1. Checking pre-installation requirements. See Installation Requirements on Page Extracting Gateway installation software for Tivoli and the installation tarfile for SPECTRUM. See Extracting Gateway Software on Page Copying the Gateway installation tarfile for SPECTRUM to the desired SpectroSERVER station, extracting Gateway installation software for SPECTRUM from the tarfile and installing it on the SpectroSERVER machine, and installing Gateway software for Tivoli on the Tivoli Enterprise Console machine. 18 Installation Requirements Installation Requirements This section lists important installation requirements you must observe to correctly install Gateway software: Install Gateway software on SPECTRUM before you install it on Tivoli. The Gateway will not install on Tivoli if you do not install Gateway software on SPECTRUM first. Gateway software for Tivoli must be installed on the same machine the Tivoli Enterprise Console is installed on. To install Gateway software for Tivoli on UNIX stations, you must have root-user privileges; for Tivoli on Windows NT stations, you must have Administrator privileges; and for SPECTRUM on UNIX and Windows NT stations, you must have SPECTRUM installation ownership privileges (the name entered in the Target Ownership field in the Installation Configuration window when SPECTRUM was installed). You must shut down the SpectroSERVER on which you are going to install Gateway software for SPECTRUM before you install. NOTES To to unpack and extract the installation files on the Windows NT platform, you must use a compression utility such as PKZIP or WinZip. See your utility s documentation for instructions. You can delete each system s installation program after installation. Extracting Gateway Software This section describes how to extract Gateway installation software downloaded to the Tivoli Enterprise Console machine: 1. Navigate to the designated download directory on the Tivoli machine. 2. Unpack and extract the installation software. Sequence for Solaris: a. # uncompress Spec_Tivoli_Gateway.tar.Z b. # tar xvf Spec_Tivoli_Gateway.tar Sequence for Windows NT: a. Double-click the Spec_Tivoli_Gateway.zip icon in Explorer. 19 Installing Gateway Software b. Follow the instructions provided by the compression utility s documentation to unpack and extract the Gateway installation files. These procedures extract the Spec_Tivoli_Gateway installation directory. This directory contains the installation software for the Gateway component for Tivoli and the installation tarfile (SpecGWInstall.tar) containing the installation software for the Gateway component for SPECTRUM. Installing Gateway Software This section describes how to install Gateway software on SPECTRUM and Tivoli. Correct installation requires you to install Gateway components for each management systems in this order: 1. SPECTRUM 2. Tivoli! CAUTION If you attempt to install Gateway software for Tivoli before you have installed Gateway software for SPECTRUM, the installation will fail. Installing Gateway Software for SPECTRUM This section describes procedures for extracting Gateway software for SPECTRUM and installing it on either the Solaris or Windows NT platforms. You will perform the following procedures in this order: 1. Copy the installation tarfile from the Tivoli Enterprise Console machine to the SPECTRUM SpectroSERVER host machine. 2. Extract Gateway software. 3. Install Gateway software E4 Installation 2-3

20 Installing Gateway Software Installing Gateway Software for SPECTRUM Getting the Gateway Installation Tarfile for SPECTRUM To get installation software for SPECTRUM from the Tivoli machine: 1. Navigate to the.../spec_tivoli_gateway directory on the Tivoli Enterprise Console machine. 2. Copy, by whatever method (i.e., cp, ftp), the SpecGWInstall.tar file from the.../spec_tivoli_gateway directory to the SpectroSERVER host machine on which you want to install the Gateway software for SPECTRUM. Extracting Gateway Software for SPECTRUM To unpack and extract Gateway software on either the Solaris or Windows NT platforms: 1. Navigate to the directory to which the SpecGWInstall.tar file was copied from either a Solaris terminal window or an Windows NT SpectroSHELL window. 2. Extract the installation files from the tarfile: # tar xvf SpecGWInstall.tar The procedure extracts the SpecGWInstall directory. Executing the Gateway Installation Script for SPECTRUM This section describes how to access and execute the Gateway installation script for SPECTRUM on either the Solaris or Windows NT platforms. Follow these steps: 1. Navigate to the SpecGWInstall directory from either a Solaris terminal window or an Windows NT SpectroSHELL window. 2. Shut down the SpectroSERVER. 3. Execute the installation script: #./install.sh The installation script (Figure 2-1) appears. It asks you to enter the SPECTRUM root directory path. 4. Navigate in Windows NT Explorer to the Spec_Tivoli_Gateway directory on the Tivoli machine. 2. Double-click the install.cmd icon. The installation script (Figure 2-2) appears. 23 Checking the Installation Checking the Installation This section describes how to determine if Gateway components were correctly installed on SPECTRUM and Tivoli. Checking the Tivoli Model in SPECTRUM The TivoliTME model type is added to the SPECTRUM model-type database during installation. SPECTRUM instantiates a Tivoli_Gateway model from it after the Gateway component on Tivoli is installed. To check for the Tivoli model: Invoke a SpectroGRAPH from the SpectroSERVER to which the Tivoli component of the Gateway connects when it is started. Figure 2-3 shows an example SpectroGRAPH that includes the Tivoli_Gateway model icon. The color-code panels on the left part of the icon indicate the number of open (or uncleared) Tivoli alarms for each alarm-condition (or -severity) category. The color-code panel on the right side of the icon displays blue until the Gateway component on Tivoli is started, and once it is started, it displays the color code for the highest-level open Tivoli alarm condition. 24 Checking the Installation Checking Gateway and SPECTRUM Elements in Tivoli Checking Gateway and SPECTRUM Elements in Tivoli The following elements are added to the Tivoli Enterprise Console during installation: SPECTRUM/Tivoli Gateway rule bases SPECTRUM EMS Alarms event group SPECTRUM EMS event source Select the following options from the Event Server icon on the Tivoli TME 10 Desktop dialog box to verify the presence of these elements: Select Rules Bases to open the Event Server Rule Bases dialog box. The following rule base icons should be included in the box: - Bidirectional - SpectrumToTivoli - TivoliToSpectrum Select Event Groups to open the Event Group Management dialog box. The SPECTRUM EMS Alarms group should be listed in the box. Select Sources to open the T/EC Source List dialog box. The SPECTRUM EMS source should be listed in the box. 25 Chapter 3 Configuration and Start-up Describes configuration procedures in Tivoli and how to start Gateway processes. Overview After you have correctly installed the Gateway on SPECTRUM and Tivoli, you can perform the following Tivoli configuration tasks and Gateway start-up procedures described in this chapter: Assign the SPECTRUM icon bitmap file to the SPECTRUM EMS event source and the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms event group. (Optional) See Associating the SPECTRUM Icon Bitmap on Page 3-2. Assign the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms event group to one or more event consoles and define the administrative privileges for the persons who will respond to SPECTRUM events on the console. See Assigning the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms Event Group to an Event Console on Page 3-6. Start the Gateway. 1.) Specify and load one of the three Gateway rule bases in Tivoli. 2.) Execute a start-up command with a rule-base option. See Gateway Start-up Procedures on Page E4 3-1

26 Associating the SPECTRUM Icon Bitmap Associating the SPECTRUM Icon Bitmap After you have installed the Gateway on Tivoli you can, if you wish, associate the SPECTRUM icon bitmap file (spectrum.xpm) to the following elements in Tivoli: SPECTRUM EMS event source SPECTRUM EMS Alarms event group The icon represents these elements in the Event Console GUI. It replaces the default Tivoli icon associated with these elements with a custom icon designed for SPECTRUM-related elements only, and it only has to be performed once. You can, however, associate another icon of your choice to these elements at any time. Associating the Icon with the SPECTRUM EMS Event Source This section describes how to associate the SPECTRUM icon bitmap with the SPECTRUM EMS event source, which is added to the event source list when the Gateway is installed on Tivoli. To associate the icon the event source: 1. Select Sources from the Event Server icon s pop-up menu on the Tivoli TME 10 Desktop dialog box (Figure 3-1). Select the spectrum.xpm file listed in the Files box, and then click the Import Bitmap and Close button to execute the procedure and close the browser. 6. Click the Replace Source button in the T/EC Source List dialog box to replace the default source. 7. Click the Save & Close button in the T/EC Source List dialog box to execute the icon assignment and close the box. Associating the Icon with the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms Event Group This section describes how to associate the SPECTRUM icon bitmap with the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms event group, which is added to the event group list when the Gateway is installed on Tivoli. To associate the icon with the event group: 1. Select Event Groups from the Event Server icon s pop-up menu on the Tivoli TME 10 Desktop dialog box (Figure 3-1). The Event Group Management dialog box (Figure 3-4) opens. It lists the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms event group. 2. Select SPECTRUM EMS Alarms from the Event Groups list box. Figure 3-4. 30 Assigning the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms Event Group to an Event Console Assigning the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms Event Group to an Event Console This section describes how to assign the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms event group to one or more event consoles so you can view SPECTRUM events from those consoles. During the assignment you must also specify the administrative privileges granted the console s user(s) who will respond in some way to SPECTRUM events on the console. To assign the event group to an event console: 1. Select Assign Event Groups from an Event Console icon s pop-up menu on the Tivoli TME 10 Desktop dialog box (Figure 3-1). Select SPECTRUM EMS Alarms entry from the Unassigned Event Groups list box and use the right arrow ( ) button to move the entry to the Assigned Event Groups list box. 3. Select the admin administrative role entry from the Admin Role list box. You are required to have admin role privileges to respond to SPECTRUM EMS Alarms (or other) events in your event console. 4. 31 Gateway Start-up Procedures Gateway Start-up Procedures You will perform the following procedures to start the Gateway process initially and also whenever you want to change the alarm/event sharing mode between SPECTRUM and Tivoli: 1. Specify and Load a rule base in Tivoli. See Specifying and Loading a Rule Base on Page Execute the Gateway start-up command. See Executing the Gateway Start-Up Command on Page 3-9. Specifying and Loading a Rule Base Before you execute the Gateway start-up command, you must specify a rule base that controls the communication of alarms/events between SPECTRUM and Tivoli. Three Gateway rule bases are written to the Tivoli rules bases set when the Gateway is installed on Tivoli: Bidirectional Tivoli displays SPECTRUM events, and SPECTRUM displays Tivoli alarms. SpectrumToTivoli Tivoli displays SPECTRUM events. TivoliToSpectrum SPECTRUM displays Tivoli alarms. NOTE You must include a command option that corresponds to the rule base you specify along with the Gateway start-up command whenever you start the Gateway for Tivoli. See Executing the Gateway Start-Up Command on Page 3-9 for more information about this requirement. To specify and load a Gateway rule base: 1. Select Rules Bases from the Event Server icon in the Tivoli TME 10 Desktop dialog box (Figure 3-1). The Event Server Rule Bases dialog box (Figure 3-7) opens E4 Configuration and Start-up 3-7

Stop and then start the event server by selecting Shut Down from the Event Server icon, and then selecting Start-up from the icon after the Tivoli TME 10 Desktop dialog box s Operation Status window indicates the shut down has successfully completed. Executing the Gateway Start-Up Command NOTE Log-on as root on Solaris and as Administrator on Windows NT before you attempt to execute the Gateway start-up command. After you have specified the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms rule base for the Tivoli Event Server, you can execute the Gateway start-up command. To execute the Gateway start-up command: 1. Navigate to the.../tivoligateway/scripts directory on the Tivoli machine. 2. Enter a start-up command specification that corresponds to the rule base you specified: If you loaded the Bidirectional rule base, enter the following command:./tivgateway.sh Bidirectional (Solaris).\TivGateway.cmd Bidirectional (NT) In Windows NT you also start the Gateway set for the bidirectional mode by double-clicking the TivGateway.cmd icon in the NT Explorer. If you loaded the SpectrumToTivoli rule base, enter the following command:./tivgateway.sh SpectrumToTivoli (Solaris).\TivGateway.cmd SpectrumToTivoli (NT) If you loaded the TivoliToSpectrum rule base, enter the following command:./tivgateway.sh TivoliToSpectrum (Solaris).\TivGateway.cmd TivoliToSpectrum (NT) E4 Configuration and Start-up 3-9

35 Accessing and Processing Alarms/Events Chapter 4 Describes how to access and process SPECTRUM event notifications in Tivoli and Tivoli alarm notifications in SPECTRUM. Overview After you have correctly installed and configured Gateway components on both SPECTRUM and Tivoli, established either bi- or uni-directional event/alarm transmission between the two, and started the Gateway, you can view and respond to alarm/event notifications generated by the other system on your system. You will use the following alarm/event notification applications: SPECTRUM Enterprise Alarm Manager (EAM) to view and respond to Tivoli events posted as alarms in SPECTRUM. See Tivoli Alarms in SPECTRUM on Page 4-2. Tivoli Event Group Message List to view and respond to SPECTRUM alarms posted as events in Tivoli. See SPECTRUM Events in Tivoli on Page 4-5. This chapter describes the following tasks: Invoking EAM from the SPECTRUM SpectroGRAPH and the SPECTRUM EMS Event Group Message List from the Tivoli Enterprise Console. Acknowledging and clearing/closing alarm/event notification entries displayed by each system s alarm-notification application. See the Spectrum Enterprise Alarm Manager User s Guide for information on EAM capabilities and the Tivoli TME 10 Enterprise Console User s Guide for information on Event Group Message List capabilities E4 4-1

36 Tivoli Alarms in SPECTRUM Tivoli Alarms in SPECTRUM Events from Tivoli are posted as Tivoli alarms in the SPECTRUM EAM window for the SpectroSERVER to which the Tivoli component of the Gateway is connected. Once you have invoked the EAM window, you can view, acknowledge, and clear the Tivoli alarm entries that are posted there. Accessing the EAM Window You can access an EAM window for the Tivoli_Gateway model or for all models on the SpectroGRAPH. If you want to access the EAM window posting alarms for the Tivoli_Gateway model only: 1. Select the Tivoli_Gateway icon on the SpectroGRAPH. 2. Select Alarms from the Icon Subviews pop-up menu (right mouse button click to access). If you want to access the EAM window posting alarms for all models, including the Tivoli_Gateway model: Invoke the EAM window from the SpectroGRAPH using either of the following methods: Select Icon Subviews from the View menu, and then select Alarms from the Icon Subviews. Select New View from the View menu, and then select Alarms from the New View menu. The SPECTRUM EAM window for the model(s) you specified opens. Figure 4-1 shows it with Tivoli alarms posted. Depending on how the EAM window s filter properties are configured, it will display either a single, highest-level-severity alarm among possible multiple alarms for the Tivoli_Gateway model or all the currently uncleared alarms for the model. See Configuring EAM to Display All Tivoli Alarms on Page 4-3 for information on how to configure the EAM to list all Tivoli alarms whenever you access the EAM window for the Tivoli_Gateway model. Because the Tivoli TME domain is modeled in SPECTRUM as a landscape, which serves as a container for multiple models, all of which may sustain alarm conditions concurrently, you will want to configure the EAM window to be able to display all possible Tivoli alarms from the Tivoli domain. To configure the EAM window: 1. Select Filter from the View menu. The Enterprise Alarm Manager: Filter window appears. Figure 4-2 shows it with the settings described in the remaining steps. 2. Click the State tab. 3. Select the Primary and Secondary state option. 4. Select the Make Changes Permanent option. 5. To acknowledge a Tivoli alarm in the EAM window: 1. Select the Tivoli alarm you want to acknowledge. 2. Select Acknowledge from the Alarms menu, or click the Acknowledge Selected Alarms icon in the EAM toolbar. An X character appears in the Ackn... field for the entry. Clearing Tivoli Alarms When you clear (or close) a Tivoli alarm in the EAM window, the Status field for the corresponding Tivoli event entry in the Tivoli Event Message List dialog box changes from OPEN to CLOSED. To clear a Tivoli alarm in the EAM window: 1. Select the Tivoli alarm you want to clear. 2. Select Clear from the Alarms menu, or click the Clear Selected Alarms icon in the EAM toolbar. The Tivoli alarm entry disappears from the EAM window. SPECTRUM Events in Tivoli SPECTRUM events are posted in the Event Message List dialog box for the event consoles that have the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms event group assigned to them. Once you have invoked the Event Message List dialog box, you can view and acknowledge critical and non-critical SPECTRUM events and close non-critical SPECTRUM events posted there. To access the Event Message List dialog box: 1. Double-click on the Event Console icon that has the SPECTRUM EMS Alarms event group and SPECTRUM EMS source group assigned to it, or select Monitor from the icon s pop-up menu. The Event Sources and Event Groups dialog boxes (Figure 4-3) open. An alarm-severity icon next to the SPECTRUM icon in each box (in graphical mode) indicates the highest-level of event severity (critical, minor, or warning) for the open (or uncleared) SPECTRUM events in each group E4 Accessing and Processing Alarms/Events 4-5

42 SPECTRUM Events in Tivoli Viewing an Entire Event Message Viewing an Entire Event Message The Event Message List dialog box enables you to configure the box to display many, but not all, event attributes on the box s top-level view. To access the entire message, which includes probable cause information, for an event: Double-click on a SPECTRUM event entry, or select the event entry and click on the View Message button. The Event Group Message Viewer window (Figure 4-5) opens. It enables you to view the entire set of attributes associated with the event you select. See Appendix A for information on suppressing the display of certain SPECTRUM event parameters. Figure 4-5. 43 SPECTRUM Events in Tivoli Acknowledging SPECTRUM Events Acknowledging SPECTRUM Events When you acknowledge a SPECTRUM event in the Event Message List dialog box, an X character appears in the Ackn... field for the corresponding SPECTRUM alarm entry in the SPECTRUM EAM. To acknowledge a SPECTRUM event in the Event Message List dialog box: 1. Select the SPECTRUM event you want to acknowledge. 2. Click the Acknowledge Message button. The value of the Status field for the entry changes from OPEN to ACK. Closing SPECTRUM Events NOTE A SPECTRUM event with a status of Critical in Tivoli is in SPECTRUM terms a non-clearable alarm condition. Only after the alarm has changed to a clearable status condition in SPECTRUM can you clear the alarm from the SPECTRUM EAM by the Tivoli Close Message operation described in this section. If you attempt the operation on a critical SPECTRUM event, the status of the event will not change in response to the operation. When you close (or clear) a non-critical SPECTRUM event in the Event Message List dialog box, the corresponding SPECTRUM alarm entry in the SPECTRUM EAM disappears to reflect the operation. To close a SPECTRUM event in the Event Message List dialog box: 1. Select the SPECTRUM event you want to close. 2. Click the Close Message button. Describing the Resource File The.tivgwrc resource file, written to the.../tivoligateway/bin directory at installation, specifies the operational parameters for the Gateway component that is installed on the Tivoli host machine. You can configure certain.tivgwrc parameters to customize the Tivoli component in the following ways: Specify whether existing and transient SPECTRUM alarms are displayed in the Tivoli Event Message List.
