EUROPEAN UNION GOVERNMENT OF ROMANIA Structural Instruments Sectoral Operational Programme Increase of Economic Competitiveness Investments for Your Future Extreme Light Infrastructure Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) - Phase II Project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund Laser interlock system at ELI-NP Bertrand de Boisdeffre, on behalf of the ELI-NP team
Outline 1. Problem definition 2. Technical Solution ELI-NP implementation phase 3. Technical Proposal ELI-NP operation phase 4. Additional needs and perspectives
Problem definition (1) Scope of the system How to protect people against laser hazards during the installation and the operation of the laser systems (HPLS and LBTS)?
Problem definition (2) In more details 1. The purpose of the Laser Interlock system is to protect people against Laser risks (eyes and skin damages) in the Laser building areas and Experimental areas. 2. The interlock system is part of a bigger laser safety plan, defined (mostly) by the Laser Safety Officer. 3. The environment is quite complex (HPLS has 2 arms, each of them with 3 laser beam outputs): laser beams can be present in 5 experimental areas.
Problem definition (3) Laser risks laser building areas Regular doors (not used during installation phase) Laser control room (LP10) Women/Men SAS (LP08, LP09) Laser technical corridor West (LP02) Sectional doors Sectional door (covered with a specific foil) Laser room (LP01) Curtain Laser technical corridor East (LP03) Laser corridor (LP11) Regular doors (entry to laser room during installation phase) Hazardous areas laser source Laser risks in the areas
Problem definition (4) Laser risks - experimental areas E1-E6 Laser transport penetrations 100TW beam transport 1PW beam transport E4 E7 Radioprotection doors E5 Hazardous areas?? Laser risks in the areas
Problem definition (5) Risks analysis (on-going process) Hazards & risks analysis (hazards matrix + laser risks analysis) have been done To mitigate them, safety functions (systems and procedures) are proposed Main system: Laser safety interlock system base of the safe environment from laser risks perspective Auxiliary systems Control Access: delivered but might require modifications Public announcement: delivered and functional CCTV system: acquisition to be launched soon Operation procedures: on-going Training & Protective measures: managed by the laser safety officer
Technical solution Implementation phase (1) Description Concept: Temporary solution that will provide minimalist laser safety conditions in the Laser control room, Laser corridor for accessing the Laser room, and Laser technical corridors. Status: Implementation, tests and documentation completed, installation on-going. Risks mitigation => from MEDIUM to LOW
Technical solution Implementation phase (2) Concept & Logic HPLS interlock system (shutters, power supplies inhibition and emergency buttons) Two laser curtain switches (CS_1 and CS_2) Four warnings lights (WL_1,, WL_4) A Laser interlock control box with one mechanical key Operation mode CS_1 state CS_2 state Emergency button state Class IV lasers (part of the HPLS) state WL_1, WL_2, WL_3, WL_4 state ON CLOSED CLOSED RELEASED ENABLED ON ON OPEN CLOSED RELEASED DISABLED OFF ON CLOSED OPEN RELEASED DISABLED OFF ON OPEN OPEN RELEASED DISABLED OFF ON X X PUSHED DISABLED OFF MAINTENANCE X X RELEASED ENABLED ON MAINTENANCE X X PUSHED DISABLED OFF Fail-safe: the HPLS will be stopped (using the HPLS interlock system) if the power supply of the Laser interlock control box fails, one lamp is not working, one electronic component fails, etc.
Description Technical proposal Operation phase (1) Concept: model, simulate and implement the safe operation modes (logic) of the ELI-NP laser interlock system for laser building areas and experimental areas. Status: conceptual design completed, list of equipment and technical specifications finalized for launching an acquisition procedure. Operation modes
Technical proposal Operation phase (2) Experimental area Field equipment & SAS Bunker door E4 Keypad Card reader Key lock Inside Sas cabin Card reader Door Emergency push bar Sas cabin Search button Emergency button HMI TV monitor (with speaker) TV monitor Outside Pass button Sas key selector
Technical proposal Operation phase (3) Field equipment experimental areas
Technical proposal Operation phase (4) Interfaces Radioprotection Interlock system Experimental areas (Building Interlock) 8 digital inputs Experiments configuration Ensure safe configurations of class IV lasers in each operation mode Laser Interlock system Stopping Class IV lasers in case of emergency HPLS interlock system 1 digital output
Technical proposal Operation phase (5) Radioprotection interlock system (Building Interlock)
Laser interlock system logic implementation Design for the integration of all the signals from the field equipment to the local PLC systems Programming of the PLC Tests and validation EMP concerns (?) Additional needs and perspectives Shutters and Beam dumps acquisition/development Off-the shelfs products can be acquired except for Shutters/Beam dumps before compressors and in the Last amplification stage Integration of the Laser Beams Transport System (LBTS) for the 10 PW beams planned but not yet decided Positioning switches for heavy and long-range motorized platforms Vacuum system elements (Gate-Valves)
Team (main contributors) Technical solution ELI-NP implementation phase Nicu STAN, Technician, RA1 Bertrand DE BOISDEFFRE, Engineer, RA1 Radu SECAREANU, RA1 Laser Safety Officer, RA1 Daniel URSESCU, Researcher Scientist, RA1 Technical proposal ELI-NP operation phase Dragos POPESCU, PhD student, RA3 Florin NEGOITA, Research Scientist, RA3 Radu ENACHE, Engineer, Technical Division Mihail CERNAIANU, Engineer, RA3 Iani MITU, Postdoctoral Research Assistant, RA2 Bertrand DE BOISDEFFRE, Engineer, RA1 Radu SECAREANU, RA1 Laser Safety Officer, RA1 Daniel URSESCU, Research Scientist, RA1 Ioan DANCUS, Research Scientist, RA1 head
