2 CE Marking From 1 July 2013 the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) will come fully into force and it will be mandatory for products that fall within the scope of a harmonised European standard (hen) to display CE marking. Failure to do so will mean that those products affected by the change will no longer be eligible for sale within the EU. What is a CE mark? CE is taken to be an abbreviation of Conformité Européenne, meaning European Conformity. The CE mark indicates that a particular construction product can be legally placed in European Economic Area (EEA) member states and is based on the principal that the product specification, and therefore, the product is fit for purpose. Fit for purpose The CE mark provides proof of fit for purpose and the manufacturer affixing the CE mark shows that the construction product will enable the finished construction works, such as a home or school, to comply with the Construction Products Regulation requirements of: Mechanical resistance and stability Safety in case of fire Hygiene, health and environment Safety and accessibility in use Protection against noise Energy economy and heat retention Sustainable use of natural resources

3 CE Marking What is a Declaration of Performance (DoP)? The Declaration of Performance (DoP) gives information about the essential characteristics of the product. A DoP is drawn up when a product covered by a harmonised standard (hen) or a European Technical Assessment (ETA) is placed on the market. All Knauf DoPs can be downloaded from: What are hen or ETAs? hen harmonised European Standard Harmonised European Standards (hens) provide a solid technical basis for manufacturers for testing the performance of their products. Using these standards the manufacturer will be in position to make the DoP for their product and to affix the CE marking. The hen for construction products assesses: Resistance to fire, reaction to fire, external fire performance, noise absorption Construction products in contact with drinking water Release of dangerous substances Product performance ETA European Technical Approval A European technical approval (ETA) for a construction product is a favourable technical assessment of its fitness for an intended use. An ETA can be granted when any of the following conditions apply: No relevant Harmonised Standards for the product exist No mandate for such a Standard has been given by the European Commission The European Commission considers that a Standard cannot be developed (yet) A product deviates significantly from the relevant Harmonised Standards ETAs allow manufacturers to place CE marking on their products.

4 Knauf and CE Marking Knauf products, that fall within the scope of a relevant harmonised European Standards (hen)* are CE marked in accordance with the EU Construction Products Regulation. This means that the key requirements regarding safety in use (such as reaction to fire or tensile strength) are type tested in our laboratories. Being accredited ISO9001 means we continue to ensure compliance of product safety characteristics. What is the benefit of CE marking? The CE mark is a kind of trade passport for the European marketplace: it allows manufacturers to freely circulate their products throughout the countries of the EEA. The benefit for manufacturers is that there is now only one set of requirements and procedures to comply with in designing and manufacturing a product for the entire EEA. The various and conflicting national regulations are eliminated. As a result, the product no longer needs to be adapted to the specific requirements of the different member states of the EU. In addition, the product will be safer for the user and this may also reduce damage and liability claims. What does it mean to the merchant/distributor? Often customers will look for CE marking on a product as an indication of the products performance. The product will be deemed safer for the user, due to the testing carried out on the product and this may also reduce damage and liability claims for the customer.
