In an industry full of hazards, we must ensure that each job that is done is risk assessed and mitigation measures are put in place to protect people and assets. While we are trying to make the improvements in Safety in particular and Health & Environment overall, I feel, we need to hasten the pace. We have to get to the international level of Safety performance & Standards and benchmark with best in class. Over a period of time SHE Committee of DCCIA Pune, a series of HSE Initiatives being rolled out, covering important areas like a) Sharing of the Best HSE practices b) Audit by HSE committee member to other Industries c) Training Program, d) Mock drills. All this is to raise the bar and emerge as leader in SHE in the surrounding area. I am sure each of us would do our bit in Safety and help each other to reach the desired goals. Best wishes! It was decided to circulated a note to assist member industries to choose/purchase the correct type of local trees for plantation on account of World Environmental Day. The note given by Mr. N. Pralhad, Chemetall India Ltd. was forwarded to all members. On behalf of the members, the Chamber conveys thanks and appreciates the support extended by Mr. N. 3 Inter Industry Safety Competition 2014 With an aim to develop a habit of safety and awareness about the importance of safety, DCCIA Pune has been conducting Inter Industry Safety Competition among its member industries during the Safety Week. Like every year the chamber had conducted an Inter Industry Safety Competition during the safety week (4 th March 2014 to 11 th March 2014) under the aegis of the SHE Committee. The Theme for this year Safety Competition was OFF THE JOB SAFETY ; the chamber had received an overwhelming participation from the member Industries. The Competition was conducted in the following categories. 5 Best Safety Practices at John Deere India Private Limited [Unit: John Deere Pune Works] (JDPW) Static Charge Dissipating Unit At Liquefied Petroleum Gas Yard we have installed Static charge dissipating unit at entry near gate. Static energy generated from the human body would become critical hazard to the chemical storage areas & it would lead to catastrophically incidence in such areas hence it must be discharged from the human body before entering into the hazardous chemical storage areas. Every employees who are entering inside the yard has to touch the dissipating unit rod resulted in the discharge of static charge from human body. Usage of 100 % Eye protectors John Deere Pune Works has a policy to use the Eye protectors inside the manufacturing facilities. The Safety goggles (ULPS 99) are issued to every employees on the very first day of joining. All contractors are also abided by the same policy All visitors are issued the safety goggles along with the gate pass at the entrance of main plant Features of ULPS 9 Made Unicare UV / scratch / fog / static resistant, Replaceable side shields / lenses Mechanical Impact resistant Ventilation provision to side flaps Wide-angle view for excellent peripheral vision Fit to have powered glasses Biometric access control to power pallets We used Battery Operated Power pallets (BOPT) for handling the material inside the factories. Earlier these BOPT are start by using the On & Off key. Over the period these keys are not functioning properly lead to bypass of On & Off operation by using key. There is chance of unauthorized operation of BOPT. Hence we introduced the Biometric Access control for BOPT. Operator need to keep his foot on a switch mounted on a platform & scan his finger on biometric access. If operator finger is registered for that power pallet, power pallet controls will switch on & operator can start use of power pallet. Monthly Contractors Safety Meet In John Deere Pune Works has set up a Contractors safety committee wherein the committee is updated on the following, Health & Safety Incidence occurred & Investigation details, Health & Safety audits status, Safety Violations noted during the last month,health & Safety Training, Proactive Safety initiatives, Personal Protective Equipment's (PPE) standards All the contractors are invited to present the best practices implemented in their area. 5

6 Monsoon Health Tips (Monsoon Alerts) A change in season is bound to make some changes by default climates which are beneficial as well some are having adverse effects on human life. We will consider specially health related matters/problem. Common sufferings in monsoon season are:- 1) Viral infection like - various flues. 2) Bacterial infection incidence increased. 3) Parasitic infection like - malaria. 4) Skin infections like - Fungal Infections 5) Diarrheal diseases. 6) Cold, cough etc. There are 2 things which we must concentrate to pay attentions - General measures Personal care. General Measure You are well aware that there are no. of infection specially found in monsoon & they are 1) Viral infections. 2) Bacterial infections. 3) Parasitic infection & so on. Mosquitoes grow well in ponds & stagnant water spots. Flies grows on garbage's. Some mosquitoes grow on clear stagnant water. We must eliminates such water spots, keep clean gutters,keep clean premises nearby your houses, empty the vessels, plastic tins or other materials which collects water on your terrace & near to your houses. Personal Care 1) Avoid going in heavy rains unnecessarily. 2) Use personal protective's like Raincoats, rain-suits, umbrella, rainy-shoes instead of leather or canvas which allows water to percolate inside keeping your feet wet & retain moistures inside which favors fungal infections in webs of your toes & nails. 3) By wearing rain-caps, rain-suits, rain-coats or use of umbrella, you will be protected by getting wet & will prevent retaining moisture in your armpit, groins etc which are common places for fungal infections. Eating Drinking Avoid eating outiide & on open stalls as you may eat contaminated foods as flies comes & sits on such open stall foods : if you eat such foods you may likely suffer from Diarrhea/vomiting or both. If you get wet in rain chances of cold & respiratory tract infections are quite. possible hence try to protect yourself from getting wet in rain. Travelling: Try & avoid travelling on two wheelers as roads are very bad & slippery. Always try & share friend's Four Wheelers or travel by public transport. IN THE INTREST OF PUBLIC WELLBEING.'' 7 OBSERVANCE OF FIRE SERVICE DAY- 14 th April 2014-Essar Steel India Ltd, Pune Facility Essar Steel India Ltd. Pune Facility has observed the 14 th April as our National Fire Service Day to bring Fire Safety awareness. Different fire fighting Drill group Competitions were organised among the team members of different plants. Total 9 teams had participated in the competition and competition was covered the Fire Hose Drill, Fire Extinguisher Drill & BA set Drill. Different fire & rescue drill was performed by Plant Personnel and Fire team. Oil Cellar Fire, Oil Tank Fire. Coater Room Paint Fire Rescue operation at ECR Fire Fighting on height at 20mtr. With equipment Emergency handling on CNG tanker Branch Show Celebrated World Environment Day At Essar Steel India Ltd. Pune Facility Essar Steel India Ltd, Precoated Facility (ESPF) has organized World Environment Day celebration on 5 th June Tree plantation was done at 8 acre, behind BAF area, HR bond yard and in front of ARP area. Around 150 trees have been planted by senior management, employees and contractual employees on the occasion of World Environment Day. Banners were displayed across the plant and badges were distributed to all employees. Mr. Sandeep Patil, Field Officer, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) was the chief guest of the tree plantation program along with all the senior executives.
