4 How to be good to your Roses By Mary Bergeron Have you ever looked at your roses and thought they looked lonely and maybe needed a companion? Well I have and thought I had found the perfect neighbor for my lovely roses. A friend offered me this beautiful little plant she had discovered. It was short and made the prettiest little lavender flowers and even managed to multiply on its very own. In my eagerness to provide a companion for my new roses in my new flower bed I rushed home and planted these little lovelies without even doing any homework on them. Life got busy and I was unable to pay any attention to my lovely roses but felt they were well provided for with their companion plants to keep them company. Two years later I am hardly able to see my lovely rose bushes anymore and they look sad and dejected. It turned out the companion plant, Mexican Petunia were the worst neighbors for my roses. They were tall, overbearing and very obnoxious to my precious rose bushes that I usually took such good care of. So after much, and I mean much hard work all these bad neighbors were evicted from my flower beds much to the joy of my lovely rose bushes. In their happiness they started treating me to beautiful blooms again thru the spring and into the summer. My most important lesson learned to date is to be kind to my lovely roses and do a better job screening when selecting their companion plants to keep them happy and healthy. The guest speakers to date have introduced so many good varieties of companion plants from now on I will much more careful when making my selection. And that is how I learned to be good to my Roses One of My Favorites : Tahitian Treasure By B.J. Abshire Said to be Bill Radler s favorite rose. Of course, Radler is the creator of the famous Knock Out series of easy care landscape roses. Tahitian Treasure has many of the same characteristics of the Knock Out varieties. It is very easy care and extremely disease resistant. The foliage is shiny and dark green. The flowers bloom singly and in small clusters throughout the growing season and is a medium to dark shade of coral. I find it grows much smaller than the original Knock Out. They re so healthy I ve added 2 more in whiskey barrels to my garden.

5 Care Now Will Improve Fall Roses 2014 Article by Gulf District Director Allen Owings, horticulturist and ARS Consulting Rosarian HAMMOND, La. Late summer is the time to begin preparing for spectacular fall blooms on your roses. Roses need proper disease management and fertilization in August through early September for best fall performance. Rose flowering and overall performance in the landscape are not impressive during Louisiana summers, but each year we have the potential to have great fall blooms due to cooler temperatures and typically drier weather at that time of year. You will notice during summer that the flower colors are less intense and blooms are smaller. This is simply a function of summer heat. The best flower color occurs at first bloom in spring and at peak bloom in fall. Size also is best at those times of year. You ll also see darker green leaf color, especially if roses are maintained under a good fertilization program. One other thing you can do to improve fall rose performance is pruning. Hybrid tea roses can be pruned back to a height of inches. Remove crossing and competing canes and remove canes in the centers of the plants. This thinning-type of cane-removal pruning is generally recommended for late-winter pruning, but it is beneficial in late summer, too. Floribunda, grandiflora and landscape shrub roses are typically pruned in late summer to reduce plant height by one-third. In north Louisiana, complete pruning by the end of August. In south Louisiana, complete pruning by the first or second week in September. Fall blooms will normally peak days after pruning this is somewhat dependent on growing conditions after pruning, however. In conjunction with pruning, clear debris from rose beds and pull any weeds. Add a granular pre-emergent herbicide for weed control and mulch with a 2-to-3-inch layer of baled or shredded pine straw. Any new mulch can be added on top of old mulch already in the beds. Pine bark and other mulch materials can be used if pine straw is not locally available. Irrigation also needs to be maintained during droughty periods. This year we have been dry at times and wet at times. Roses need 1 inch of water weekly when rainfall is lacking. It is possible that insects will appear on roses in fall, but insects are more of an issue in spring and summer. Scout plants once weekly. Spider mites, aphids, flower thrips and cucumber beetles are usually the main problem insects on roses. A new insect causing major problems on roses in Louisiana is chilli thrips. These are foliage-feeding thrips instead of flower-feeding thrips. They are hard to identify and hard to control once a population is established. You can find more information on chilli thrips by going online. It is important to continue disease control on roses in late summer and fall. If weather is dry, foliage diseases may not be a major problem. But if we have rainfall or overwater or if plants are in partial shade or have air circulation issues, disease can occur. The amount of disease on roses largely depends on the kind of roses you have. Landscape shrub roses rarely need regular fungicide applications, while hybrid teas, the roses most susceptible to blackspot fungus, need spraying on a 10-day schedule until the first killing frost. Be sure to fertilize in late summer, too. Most people fertilize at the same time as pruning and mulching. A slowrelease fertilizer will produce nice, uniform foliage growth through September and promote October flowering. Rose beds that have been regularly fertilized and contain soil high in phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium may need less fertilization than newer beds or beds that have not been regularly fertilized. Liquid feed can also be included to encourage bloom size in early October. If soil ph is wrong in your rose beds, fall is a great time to address this issue. The ideal soil ph for roses is You can learn this through a soil test. Mid-September through October is a great time to plant new roses in your landscape. Try low-maintenance landscape shrubs like the Knock Out varieties and the Drift series. Good floribundas include Cinco de Mayo, Hot Cocoa, Julia Child, Easy Does It and Easy Goin. You also can select lower-maintenance hybrid tea roses, but these are more available at garden centers in the spring. The Drift roses are Louisiana Super Plants and are increasingly available at local nurseries in seven flower colors. (editor s note: other low maintenance varieties available mostly in the spring include the Kordes and Meilland varieties such as Beverly, Wedding Bells, Mother of Pearl, Dark Desire, Savannah, The McCartney Rose Dee-Lish Poseidon, Sunny Sky Kardinal Kolorscape and many others.)

6 Arrangement Workshop - June 24th in Lafayette Five of our members attended the workshop held at Ira Nelson Horticulture Center...Linda Aguzin, Virginia Bowen, Mary Bergeron, Diane Rountree and BJ plus other societies were represented. Each participant created an informal breakfast/lunch tray and an additional arrangement. They all were very creative and had a good time designing their trays and arrangements. Tips for Fall Pruning- Get out there and prune if you haven t The major things to remember when you prune your hybrid tea, grandiflora and mini roses in the fall are: - Remove only about 1/3 of the bush unless they were new plants this year you may want to just shape the bush by taking just a little off - Make the cut about ¼ inch above a five leaf axel - Do not remove all the leaves as is recommended in February - Remove all dead canes (this can be done anytime throughout the year) - Remove all skinny/twiggy growth (the new cane that grows will always be slightly smaller than the one from which it grew. Large blooms need a strong healthy cane or stem. - Remove all dead and diseased leaves from the rose bed.
