1 The Rose Gazette Monroe, Louisiana Affiliate of the American Rose Society November 2018 October Meeting Thanks to Diane Smith for hosting the meeting and to Diane Smith, Linda Zagone and Candy Gough for providing such great food. For those that were not able to attend, we reviewed the presentation by Dr. Raj Singh from LSU on Rose Rosette Virus. If you notice any roses around the Monroe / West Monroe area that have any of the symptoms of Rose Rosette, please notify Ken Kelley so that we can get it confirmed with Dr. Singh. For preventive measures against Rose Rosette Virus, you can spray your roses 3 weeks prior to first blooms with a miticide that contains Bifenthrin. Websites like sells this under the brand name of Bifen IT with one pint yielding gallons for $ November Meeting Our next meeting is November 18 at the home of Gayle Baldree located at 614 Northwood Drive, West Monroe at 2:00 pm. Hosts for this meeting are Lu Jones and Harvey Hanson. Our special guest speaker will be Dr. Allen Owings who is the Senior Horticulturist for Bracy s Nursery and Clegg s Nursery. 2 Tips on Labeling Plants by Ken Kelley Anyone that grows plants has tried many different methods of labeling their plants. I personally have struggled to decipher plant names that I have only labeled after a few short months. James Mills of K & M Roses gave me some advice about markers used for labeling. I ordered some and proceeded to test against what I had been using. The photo on the left was taken on July 24, 2018 and shows (L-R) Allflex label, Sharpie Extreme Magic Marker, and a standard Sharpie Brand Magic Marker permanent marker. I started with new labels and located them on a fence together where they would all endure the same weather conditions. The photo on the right shows the same 3 labels on October 18, 2018, only 3 months from the beginning of the test. Results show that the Allflex marker far exceeded both the Sharpie Magic Marker Extreme and Sharpie Permanent Markers. The marker that performed the worst is the Sharpie Extreme Magic Marker which after only 3 months is getting very pale. The Allflex label appears as good as the day I created it. In the Garden by Ken Kelley During the month of November is the time to stop drastic cutting back of your roses. As the growing season winds down, starch and minerals are stored in the canes. Leaves are essential to this process so retain as many of the leaves on the plant as you can. Most rosarians stop fertilization in October but continue to spray with fungicides until their roses reach dormancy. Watering becomes less critical as the plants go into dormancy but the beds should not be allowed to get too dry. Now is the time if you have not already done so to make sure you have a 2-3 layer of mulch on your beds. This will protect the roots from any hard freezes and help retain water. Early November is a great time to build any new beds and remove any roses that are not meeting you expectations or have been problematic Mills Magic Order I will once again be ordering Mills Magic Fertilize in Their new price list will not be available until after November 1, 2018 and I would like to get this order placed by end of If you would like to order any please let me know. 2

4 Controlling Fire Ants 1 Fire ants are a common problem in our yard and our rose garden and they have been very troublesome this year. I have always been worried that usage of fire ant poison around the roots of my plants could be detrimental. However, recently I attended one of the sessions at the Mississippi State Fall Flower and Garden Festival in Crystal Springs, Mississippi on Control of Fire Ants and that was one of the questions asked. You may use whatever method of ant control works best for you and it is safe on your plants, even potted plants. Below are two methods to control fire ants: Baits: The key to success with baits is applying them as broadcast treatments instead of treating only individual mounds. You will never win the battle against fire ants by only treating individual mounds. In addition to the big mounds you can easily see or trip over there are a lot of little colonies that are just getting started. If you eliminate only the big mounds, the small colonies will thrive because they have less competition, and they will quickly grow into large mounds. Broadcast bait treatments target all colonies in the yard, regardless of size. Early spring is the best time to apply fire ant baits because fire ants are actively foraging for food at this time. If you are going to treat only one time per year, do it in the spring. But you can improve control by treating again in midsummer and a third time in the fall, especially if you live in a rural area where fire ants are abundant. Use Easter, Independence Day, and Labor Day to remind you it is time to apply fire ant bait. Apply fire ant bait when the ground is dry and when ground temperature is between 70F 90F. Remember that fire ant baits are supposed to be slow-acting. The worker fire ants pick up the bait granules and carry them back to the colony. Adult fire ants can t eat solid food; they have to feed it to the larvae, which digest and liquefy it. The liquid food, which still contains the insecticide, is then collected from the larvae by other workers and passed among the ants in the colony, eventually reaching and killing the queen. Recommended fire ant baits Brand Name (insecticide) Rate / mound Rate / acre Amdro Fire Ant Bait (hydramethylnon) (0.73%) 2 5 Tbsp 1 1/5 lbs Advion (indoxacarb) ((0.045%) 4 Tbsp 1.5 lbs Sprectracide Once and Done (indoxacarb) ((0.016%) 4 Tbsp 0.5 lb / 1000 sq ft Mound Treatment: If you don t want to wait 4 weeks for a bait treatment to control that big mound then individual mound treatment containing a contact insecticide provides much quicker control than bait treatment. There are two basic methods of treating individual fire ant mounds: liquid drenches and dry mound treatment. The liquid drenches provide the quickest control but they are time-consuming to mix and apply. The dry mound treatments are easy and convenient to use, but these are less effective and usually take a few days to work. Regardless of which method you use, don t disturb the mound before treating. If you do, the workers may take the queen or queens to safety by moving them either deep into the mound or out one of those underground tunnels to establish satellite mounds. 1 Taken from Mississippi State Extension Control Fire Ants in Your Yard 4
