4 News from the Gulf District David Austin Gardens at the ARC American Rose Center in Shreveport LA Photos and comments from CenLa RS Rosebud, Billie Flynn editor and photographer, & The Rose Gazette, NELA RS, Wanda & Ken Kelly, editors CRS members returned to the American Rose Center in late April to inspect the bare root Austin roses they planted in mid- March. Amazing to see the growth and abundant BLOOMS! Same rose bed in February Forrest on his knees in the dirt removing roots while Clyde, Robert, Kelly, Lynn, Marilyn, Marie, BJ, Allen and Billie dug holes, removed roots and planted what is blooming this spring. The American Rose Center was in full bloom at the time of the April 27th visit. Hope you get to see them, too! Marilyn Wellan recently presented to the ARS Board of Directors meeting in California a proposal for the Gardens of the American Rose Center to be redesigned, replanted, and consolidated. This was unanimously approved and will be a five -year project from The current gardens will be condensed to allow for re-focusing. Companion plants will also be included. Tree removal in the ARC Gardens will commence soon. This will not be costing money we will be receiving funds for the trees. Donations from the ARS Gulf District and Gulf District members of around $5000 has been received for the David Austin Garden project with an emphasis on tree
5 Leslie Finical Halleck Azatrol Azadirachtin the active ingredient in Neem oil. Controls a number of insects and mites Once isolated it becomes a powerful organic insecticide. 6 Continued from previous page While good cultural practices are always the preferred means to plant health, we can t always prevent every disease or pest. A new generation of organic fungicide has emerged in the market over the last several years. IMPORTANT Regalia Biofungicide: an extract of Reynoutria sachalinensis (giant knotweed), which works by turning up a plants natural defense system. Improves disease resistance to several fungal bacteria diseases in treated foliage. Effective on powdery mildew, downy mildew, Botrytis grey mold, Early Blight, Late Blight, Bacterial leaf spot and more..
7 Continued from previous page Serenade Biofungicide: Contains a patented strain of Bacillus subtilis ~ Best used early in the season for fungal diseases to help prevent them. ~Can be used on edibles. ~Controls or suppresses diseases such as Fire Blight, Botrytis, Sour Rot, Rust, Sclerotinia, Powdery Mildew, Bacterial Spot and White Mold. Excerpts from Leslie Halleck s bulletin: New Organic Gardening Products and Trends May in the Garden The spring rains have been generous, and, in some cases, quite devastating! If your garden develops bushes with dropping yellow leaves covering the mulch, open up the soil with a garden fork to allow the roots to breath a bit. The dry, cooler mornings are ideal for working in your garden pulling weeds, dead-heading, pruning out spindly, non-productive branches and blind shoots. Check for caterpillars, cucumber beetles, and night feeders, even squirrels eat the buds! The damage is the clue to the solution. Is there sign on the leaves? Caterpillar or June bug. Hole in the bud, bud worm or cucumber beetle? Your best tools are your thumb and index finger, squash those invaders! How about crinkly leaves, powdery mildew or chili thrips? Flower thrips are visible inside the bloom, chewing the petals, leaving very unattractive flowers! Know what pest is to be eradicated. Most insecticides are contact: pesticide must hit the pest to eliminate it! Some insect invasions can be forestalled with a regular spray on the buds with a contact insecticide for the specific pest. Or, in the case of spider mites, a forceful spray of water under the leaves keeps them from an infestation. When aphids appear on new growth, look for lady beetles to eat them all! Aphids, too, can be dislodged with a spray of water. If Conserve or Orthene is being used for thrips, that should take care of aphids too.
8 Continued from previous page, Same with diseases! Know what must be treated; spray contact chemicals to cure the disease -3 times 3 days apart. Once disease is arrested regular spray programs should keep leaves clean. Remember to alternate contact and systemic fungicides so disease doesn t develop resistance. Disease resistant rose varieties not diseases resistant to the cure. If one is using systemic fungicide/ insecticide products notice timing; many are to be used no more than twice a season. One season is 3 months long. And, not on potted roses. There are several other products used for treating different diseases that have a timing stipulation. Stature, is one used for treating Downey Mildew. And, herbicide, SedgeHammer is another that can only be used twice in a season. READ LABELS Also, notice if insecticide contains Imidacloprid. Great on thrips, but harms bees. Be aware, spray when bees are not active. New products are coming on the market that are more safe for the desirable insects and for us, too! Keep feeding the soil with a good organic fertilizer, keep those leaves coming, mulch to keep roots cool, weeds down, moisture in the soil, add gypsum if soil is compacted, do not walk in rose beds! (I hear Earl Hudgins with that admonition!) Add a spring tonic as needed after each bloom cycle is over. Your bushes will love you for it and bloom their hearts out! Care for your tools, and equipment. Spray or wipe clippers, saws, loppers with alcohol to prevent sharing disease from one bush to another. Rinse spray tanks, flush tubing, and nozzle with clean water before storing. Keep chemicals in a safe place. Come to the meeting, make new friends, enjoy sharing gardening stories! See you there! Bring roses and questions! Rose blessing to your garden! je, editor The April Rosette was short a Kordes Rose listing by BJ Abshire; too many photos, computer balked! So here s the listing and a suggestion to check out the website Kordes Roses.com on line for pictures and info on the varieties. Several rosarians in the Gulf District have discovered how great these roses are in the garden: disease resistant, fragrant, and ever blooming. The buds of the Hybrid Teas have a HT look, but open into lovely, large OGR style blooms, long lasting even in the heat and in arrangements for you and your friends to enjoy! Climbers, Minis, Floribundas, Shrubs, too.
