3 by CRS editor With a list of rose shows and events available in October, CRS President Kelly Texada reviewed the list while encouraging members to participate. Rose Show and Tell allowed members to display their blooms and gave an opportunity for members to ask questions. A mystery rose in the Help Me Identify class was provided with two possibilities. Rose Show and Tell will resume next spring. Meanwhile, keep taking pictures of your fall blooms and send digital copies to Kelly for the CenLA Rose Society facebook page and the slideshow before each meeting. Also, take pictures to use in the photo classes in our spring rose show. The rose classes for rose shows always remain the same. They are: Class a...one Bloom (must have just one beautiful rose at exhibition stage), Class b...one Spray (must have several open blooms, can also show buds around the open blooms), Class c...one Open Bloom (one beautiful bloom with fresh stamens showing), Class d...rose Arrangement (any type arrangement with roses), Class e...rose Garden or Rose Society Activity, and Class f...abstract of Impressionistic Rose Photo (can be a zoomed in close-up or digitally edited). Keep a record of the rose variety in your photo. Photos must be 5x7 and displayed in a 8x10 matted (cardboard) frame of any color. Class b One Spray of Sally Holmes, 5x7 photo displayed in 8x10 mat Questions Asked At The October Meeting Virginia White, new member with only spots of sunshine in her tree shaded yard, asked if she could successfully grow roses in large pots. Answers Given: Several members answered, yes, they grow roses in large pots, some on the patio, some out in the yard. Members suggested using a good commercial potting mix. Other suggested mixing 3 parts potting soil, 1 part perlite with 1 part peat moss. Others reminded her to have several large drainage holes and to feed regularly with liquid fertilizer. Then someone asked if there were any solution for keeping ants out of flower pots? One person suggested putting wire mesh in the bottom of the pot while someone else said they add coffee and tea grinds to their potted plants. Clyde Bartlett, Master Rosarian was asked: Question: How and when do I apply dolomite lime to my rose garden? A ph meter determined the soil high in acid. Answer: Pull back the mulch, broadcast the granulars of lime over the whole area, water the area, cover with mulch. Question: Are ph meters accurate? Answer: Soil tests tell more than ph levels, but good commercial ph meters are useful to determine the acid and alkaline levels

4 ARS South Central District Convention and Rose Show Houston, Texas, October 21-23, 2016 Gulf District members enjoyed a list of educational speakers promoting growing a variety of roses. ARS Vice-President Bob Martin spoke on Roses Anyone Can Show while showing roses of almost every variety growing in his California garden. Speaker and hybridizer Ping Lim s enthusiasm for growing and creating new roses was inspiring. Billie realized she grew 4 fours roses created by Ping Lim. Dr Larry Unruh and Dr Alan Henn spoke on chemicals and research. Houston Rose Society provided a lavish reception Friday night and a grand banquet Saturday night with two garden tours on Sunday. Gulf District members Jim Mills sold beautiful roses from his K&M Roses Nursery, Linda Aguzin, BJ Abshire and Diane Rountree judged horticulture while Billie Flynn and Kelly Texada exhibited. 5 2016 Biltmore International Rose Trials Summary by Biltmore International Rose Trials Judge Marilyn Wellan: The historic and magnificent Biltmore Home, surrounded by thousands of acres at Asheville, NC was a get-away home for the wealthy Vanderbilts. My visit there included a tour of the 250-room home, America s largest. The gardens of the Biltmore, including the rose garden, were designed by Frederick Olmstead who also designed New York s Central Park. It was a great pleasure to be invited to judge the Biltmore Rose Trials in September. Forty roses were included in the Marilyn recording the score trials. They had been grown without spraying for three years, identified only by a number, and they were ready for their final judging by old and new rose friends from across the country. The event began with a lovely opening reception in the rose garden, where spectacular hats were worn by the ladies. Judging got underway early the next morning. Once the judging was concluded, there was a magnificent lunch, which was followed by the awards ceremony where the winners were presented. Kordes was the winner of the George and Edith Vanderbilt Award with his rose Polar Express. Kordes rose Honeymoon also won the Lord Burleigh Award for best disease resistant rose and the award for best climber. Hybridizer Ping Lim s rose Double 10 was named the best Hybrid Tea. All three of these winners are white. Best shrub was won by David Austin s The Lark Ascending, a beautiful red. Why are rose trials important? When a rose variety wins an award at a rose trial, that award becomes part of that rose s biography throughout its commercial life. Many nurserymen, professional and amateur hybridizers alike, submit their new introductions to these trials around the world, especially in Europe, and are hopeful they will gain recognition as outstanding new cultivars. Similar rose trials are being carried out at the Gardens of the American Rose Center and at the LSU Hammond Research Center and elsewhere, just without the fanfare of the Biltmore Rose Trials. Theresa was also a judge at the trials. She and Chris Van Cleave are co-host of Rose Chat Podcast. 6 by CRS editor November is a beautiful season in Louisiana. The cooler temperatures allow more time for buds to develop, producing larger blooms with more vibrant colors. Cooler temperatures also invite rosarians to stroll through the garden enjoying the blooms and taking stock of plants that did not produce according to expectations. Corrections to the soil and planting of new bushes are ideal goals to be accomplished in November. But, cooler temperatures do not prevent ever present blackspot and to make matters worse chili thrips have been found in three rose gardens this week. Be alert. Do not delay treatment. Warm and Wet November and December Ideal For Blackspot Recall what happened in Central LA last year after a hot, dry summer. Rosarians didn t spray in the 95+ temperature. The air was dry. Blackspot fungus spores did not germinate. No problems. But, the spores were not gone. They were not dead. Instead, they were lurking, waiting for a time when the leaves would stay wet for eight or ten hours. Then it happened. The welcomed rains came. It rained off and on for a couple of days with nice cloudy days and cool nights. The summer drought was over. Within two weeks leaves on every rose bush started to show signs of blackspot. Some bushes were affected more than others; some lost most of their leaves. The ground was covered with yellow leaves. Don t let it happen again this year. The best way to control blackspot is to spray a fungicide containing Mancozeb. Spray the stems, top and underside of all leaves plus the surrounding area. Fungicides containing Mancozeb kill the blackspot spores on contact but they do not protect the leaves from spores that germinate tomorrow. Add a preventative fungicide to your mixture. Preventative fungicides are labeled as Systemic fungicides. Protect the bees and butterflies. Do not use fungicides with insecticides. If possible remove infected leaves from the bush. They will not get better. Remove those on the ground. Maybe you sprayed and killed the fungus spores or just maybe you missed the underside of one. Dispose of infected leaves in the trash, not the compost. Chili Thrips in Central Louisiana Brought in on New Plants LSU AgCenter LSU AgCenter Photo by BJ Abshire Chili thrips have become a big problem in south Louisiana for the last several years. Until this fall CenLA Rose Society members have not seen evidence of chili thrips. In a week s time three gardens in Alexandria showed signs on chili thrip damage on new plants. Be alert. As you remember from Gaye Hammond s program last summer, chili thrips penetrate into the tissue of new growth, sucking out the juices, leaving new growth withered and deformed. You don t realize chili thrips are present until the damage is visible. From article by Master Rosarian Gaye Hammond, Houston Rose Society at The good news is that chilli thrips can be controlled.... The bad news is that chilli thrips damage is not correctly identified resulting in a population explosion, which gets rapidly out of control and hard to eliminate. Damaged areas should be removed. Products shown to be effective on chilli thrips are spray products containing spinosad.... Some products containing spinosad that I have used to control chilli thrips are Conserve and Fertilome Bagworm & Caterpillar Spray. Also effective for chilli thrips are products containing acephate. Acephates are indiscriminate pesticides in that they kill everything they come in contact with. So if you foster bees and butterflies, applications of acephates will negatively impact those beneficial insects. It is smart to time your spray applications around mid-morning when it is less likely that the beneficial insects are in residence. If you had chilli thrips during the growing season, consider applying a dormant oil spray in December or January. Dormant oil sprays are petroleum-based products that smother pest larvae and eggs that may be overwintering in the plant. See more information at: Photo by BJ Abshire - 6 -

7 Did you hear? CenLA Rose Society members at the October meeting approved the suggestion that the society purchase a quality ph meter that can be used by all members. The Horticulture Chairman would be the caretaker of the meter. Members could request the Horticulture Chairman and his committee come to their garden to check the ph of the soil in different rose beds while discussing other questions about the garden. Consulting Rosarian Floyd Hebert suggested members simply bring labeled plastic bags of soil from different rose beds then have the soil tested before the monthly meeting. Looking Ahead: CenLA Rose Society will be privileged to welcome ARS President Pat Shanley as the guest speaker at the February regular monthly meeting. She will be traveling from the ARS Gulf District Mid-Winter Workshop in Gonzales on Saturday to meet with CenLA Rose Society members on Sunday. CenLA Rose Society members are truly honored and look forward to the occasion. ARS Gulf District 2017 Spring Tour with ARS Gulf District Director Allen Owings.
