Hello everyone, A Message from our President Nita Acklen It seems like it was just yesterday that we were worrying about the heat and lack of water. Now, here we are, about to enter the holiday season and we have had quite a bit of rain and cooling temperatures. Where did the time go? With the cooling temperatures, we are seeing the fall blooms. I had a guest from Colorado last Monday and she was amazed that we had blooms in late October. They had already had 4 inches of snow. We, here in Louisiana, are so very fortunate when it comes to our rose growing climate. I hope you are enjoying the cooler weather and spending time in your garden. (con t below) I d like to update everyone on the work the Garden Gang has accomplished. Actual work on the roses has slowed, but we have been working diligently with the Rose Center in preparing for Christmas in Roseland. We have been assisting in replacing bulbs in the Christmas decorations in the gardens and on rainy days we have worked in the library organizing the books. We have designated Friday, November 2 nd as our day to decorate the Shanley/DelVecchio Pavilion, as our contribution for Christmas in Roseland. Join us if you can. I have to say that working with the Garden Gang has enhanced the relationship I have with the Rose Center. The more involved I am, the more attached I get. Christmas In Roseland begins Friday November 23 rd and continues on Friday, Saturday and Sunday through December 16 th with special Encore Nights every night from December 17 th through 22 nd. 2 November Rose Society Meeting The November meeting of the rose society will be held at the home of Ed and Karen Durham. We will have a Fall Luncheon. The Durhams will provide the main dish, and each member is asked to bring a side dish, salad, vegetable, or dessert. We will meet at 11:00 instead of 10:00. It is VERY important that you RSVP so we will have a place set for you. The Durham s address is 440 Southfield Rd. That is the part of Southfield that runs between Line Ave. and Gilbert. Reception for Pat Shanley and Bob Martin We need volunteers to provide food for the reception on December 8 th for outgoing ARS President, Pat Shanley and incoming President Bob Martin. CenLa Rose Show Congratulations to Angel Milstead, one of our newest members who participated in the CenLa Rose Show held in Pineville, LA on October 20 th. This was Angel s first rose show and she walked away with two blue ribbons. On the left is the Novice class; on the right is Decorative Hybrid Tea. 2

3 Gardening Tips for November Secure a Soil Test Box from your local Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service and have a soil test done of your rose beds to see if you need to add lime or other nutrients. It takes several weeks for lime to take effect. Add organics such as manure, alphalfa pellets, cottonseed meal and bone meal. If you have had a bad case of black spot like most of us, it is recommended that you remove the dead infested leaves from the bed. Then add a layer of fresh mulch about four inches thick to protect the graft and roots in case of a hard freeze. You can use such things as pine needles, ground up leaves or any of the commercial mulches on the market. One of the best is ground hardwood mulch. Continue to spray for black spot the tremendous amount of rain we ve had Black spot on rose leaves made ideal growing conditions for black spot. Now that the rain has stoped, for a few days, we have noticed that our bushes are still wet at mid-morning. Give them a dose of a fungicide such as Manzate that will kill the spores as well as spray with a preventative fungicide such as Honor Guard. Remove any dead canes that might be on the bush. These could be harboring disease and serve no purpose. If this is a large cane, you might want to put a little Elmer s Glue on the cut. This helps to keep insects or borers from digging into the cane and doing further damage. December in Your Garden Old Man Winter is just around the corner! Hope he does not come early this year. Continue to be vigilant and check your roses for black spot and spray with a fungicide to kill the spores. Spraying during the winter helps to insure your roses are disease free once spring arrives. You may want to consider spraying with neem oil now that cooler weather is here. Take a soil sample to check the ph if you did not do so in November. December and January is a good time to add organics to your bed, if your beds have settled give the soil a lift with a pitch fork (be careful not get too close to the roots) and ease organics such as horse manure or a good top soil around the rose. If you did not add alphalfa pellets, cottonseed meal, and fishmeal in November, do so now. Add a thick layer of mulch to protect from freezing. Sit back, relax and browse your favorite rose catalogue, talk to fellow rosarians and order any new roses to arrive in February for spring planting. Tour the garden, browse the display of historical artwork from Civil War era Louisiana, enjoy a wine social at 5:00 pm, visit with old friends and make new ones. Friday 6 pm attend the awards' banquet which will include a presentation, Year of the River, marking the historical significance of the rivers of Louisiana and the introduction of formal gardens to Louisiana. Saturday morning 7:45-8:15 am: Registration, Coffee, juice, pastry, fruit, etc. 8:15 am - Workshop presentations begin. Saturday s theme will focus on Making Your Garden Great and include keynote speaker, Paul Zimmerman, author, landscape designer, instructor and currently head of Design for the Jackson & Perkins Landscape & Garden Design Service working to redesign the American Rose Center gardens. 5 Ken Kelley installed as the Gulf District Director. Congratulations to Ken and thank you and Wanda, for stepping forward to serve local, district and national rose societies. Ken was installed as Gulf District Director during ceremonies at the October 2018 National ARS Fall Convention in San Diego. Ken also will serve on the ARS Bylaws Committee. We look forward to following your leadership. Dr. Allen Owings was installed as Region 7 Director. Dr. Owings has served 6 years as Gulf District Director for Louisiana and Mississippi. As Regional Director he will be working to coordinate educational rose events for all rose societies in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Arkansas. He is also the Chairman of the American Rose Center Committee. Antique Rose Emporium - Fall Festival of Roses Frank and I have just returned from Brenham, Texas where we attended the 2018 Festival of Roses. It was our first trip for this event and we highly recommend it for all of our members. We heard such noted speakers as Mike Shoup, Root Your Own Roses, Andrew Barocco, Breading Roses for the Future, Pam Smith, The Best of the Best: Latest Rose Trial Results at Farmers Branch; Connie Hilker, Heritage and Preservation Why It s Important, Malcom Manners of Florida Southern University, Gardens with Roses: Perceptions from a World Traveler ; Henry Flowers, Roses are Herb s Too ; Maurizio Usai from Sardinia, The Thorny Issue Designing with Roses and Stephen Scaniellio, Restoration, Preservation & Recreation. On the first day we visited four different gardens. All were most unusual and very interesting. That evening we were guests in the beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Shoup, owners of Antique Rose Emporium. There was plenty of time to make new rose friends as well as lots of great gumbo and fellowship. We are definitely planning another trip there next year. 5
