2 President s Letter 2012 Spring Dear Ohio Lily Friends, The Spring Bulb Sale and meeting will be Sunday, April 15 th. Be there early for the best selection of bulbs. Please pre-order to get the very best selection of bulbs. Remember that the bulbs you plant this spring should bloom this summer. The calendar says this is spring although it does not seem as if we really had a winter this year. The daffodils, tulips and day lilies have pushed their leaves up through 5 inches of leaf mulch. The hydrangea and rose bushes are showing leaf buds and the hellebore is blooming all weeks ahead of the usual in our area. I m writing this the first week of March, and like many of you, we have had too much rain. Let s all hope that we will soon have dryer weather so we can work in our gardens. The Bulb Committee has chosen several new to us bulbs, member requested bulbs and several old favorites. New from Columbia-Platte Lilies, Inc., is a bulb for auction, Sizzle (CP). There are also five new bulbs each from Mac Lilies and from The Lily Nook. A very exciting spring selection! I would very much like to have another candidate for the NALS medal for The award will be presented at the 2012 fall meeting. The medal was established to recognize a member in the lily society who has contributed to the success of the organization. Please send me any names of members that you would like to nominate and your name and phone number so that we (you & I) can discuss your reasons for the nomination. This summer we are back at Kingwood again with our own show on Saturday and Sunday, July 7 th & 8 th, Please plan to enter a stem(s), a plant or an arrangement in our show. You can check the available categories in the attached Lily Show Schedule. Bring your lilies and we will help you with the tags. It does help if you know the name of the lily, but if not; we can enter it as unnamed if no one here can identify it. It s fun to enter and more fun to win so please enter! Lilytopia, inspired by the world-famous lily show at Holland s Keukenhof gardens as shown to us at the Fall 2010 meeting by Brian Bergman was attended by Jan and John Stein in John took wonderful photos that he has posted on our website, as a slide show. I do want to encourage you to not only attend the NALS Lily Show, but to plan to enter a stem(s) or an artistic arrangement. The schedule of classes is very much as at the OLS Lily Show. This show July 11 th 15 th,2012, is in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. For details please check the NALS website, As we are aware, there have been many changes at Kingwood. Kingwood has decided to celebrate The Great Pumpkin Glow on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, the date we had selected for our Fall bulb sale. I had to select another date quickly and consulted with several OLS members. We selected Saturday, Oct. 27, We have been advised that there is significantly greater attendance on Saturday so this change may work to our advantage. Kingwood has had to find new ways to generate income and one of those is to charge a $5.00 fee per car admission. However members of a club paying room rental fees for a sale may enter the grounds for free on the day of the sale. Just tell the security guard at the gate that you are a member of the Ohio Lily Society and you will be able to park for free. Do Plan on joining us for our potluck luncheon following the bulb sale. OLS will provide the meat (baked ham and roast turkey breast). Each of us is asked to bring a dish to share plus our own table service. Coffee and tea will be provided. See you all on April 15 th. 4 Ask Harry By Harry Humus No questions have been submitted this spring! So, this gives me the opportunity to talk about the weather. Hasn t it been grand? A number of lilies are already popping out of the ground. The frost-free date here in Larry s North Olmsted garden is around mid May. That is a long time for weather to stay warm and not have a frost or freeze that will result in damaged stems. The ground continues to be very wet and I know Larry is worried about how lilies survived the winter months with saturated soil. Speaking of Larry, I happened o overhear a conversation about lilies he was having with one of the neighbors. The topic involves whether you can, or should, try to plant a lily purchased for Easter in the garden. As most of you probably know, essentially all of the Easter Lilies sold this time of year in the US come from one of nine companies who produce their bulbs on farms along the Oregon/California border. In fact, just about all the Easter Lilies sold in the US are a single selection of Longiflorum, which has been named Nellie White. On a worldwide basis the growing of potted lilies for Easter is a very large business. As a result, numerous selections have been made from Longiflorum with each selection exhibiting growing characteristics suitable for the potted plant market. Desirable characteristics include a rather short robust plant with a few large flowers and which exhibit an extremely repeatable time to reach a flowering stage from the time it is planted. (Greenhouses don t want the plant to be finished flowering too soon or too late. What do you do with a greenhouse full of plants when they still have not flowered a week after Easter?) J. White selected Nellie White in 1955 and it quickly became the preferred selection being used here. My previous advice regarding planting out your Easter lily in your garden was to give it a try. Longiflorum are not reliably hardy everywhere in Ohio but you might be lucky and get a few years worth of bloom. However, recent research has shown that 100% of the Nellie White are infected with lily symptomless virus. This virus, which is probably the most common lily virus, frequently causes no apparent symptoms in the plant (hence the name). It does make the plant more susceptible to any other virus or disease so it is frequently seen in combination with another virus. The symptomless virus does tend to produce a stunted plant growth. Anyone see a pattern here of short growth being a desirable Easter lily plant characteristic? So I am rescinding my recommendation. Throw out your Easter lily after you are finished with it and do not plant it in your garden. It is not worth the risk of spreading this virus to your otherwise healthy lilies! Page 4 of 5

5 2012 NALS MEETING AND SHOW The Manitoba Regional Lily Society is hosting a wonderful show and Convention on July 11-15, The show event is called Manitoba Moments and will be held at the Canad Inn Polo Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Tours will include The Lily Nook, Assiniboine Park English Garden and Leo Mol Sculpture Garden. The speakers at the convention will be David Hercsberg from Latvia, Terry Willoughby, Sara Williams, Nigel Strohman, Hugh Skinner and Art Evans. NALS Membership Contact is: Stephanie Sims, P.O. NALS also maintains a lending library for member use, funds Lilium research through its Research Trust, and conducts an annual lily popularity poll to identify varieties that perform well for members.
