1 SOUTH SASKATCHEWAN LILY SOCIETY INC. Affiliate of the North American Lily Society, Inc Our website: NEWSLETTER Vol. XX111 / No.2 June.2014 Vice presidents message Hi. It's me again. Susan the whiner. Still sitting in my chair with the same blanket, different cup of coffee. The snow is gone, but the rain looks like it is here to stay. Having problems with some of the newer lilies that I planted in the fall. They are still dormant. Don't think they are ever going to come up. My ground is still cold in the shade spots. Had to dig up some of my new OT's and lift them higher. Trying to rot. The only thing that seemed to like the cool spring was my martagons. Fantastic size on the stems. Don't forget that we are having a martagon show July 5th at the Golden Mile Center. Hope with the later date we will have more stems to show. Still need a couple of more people to work at the show, so if you are available let me know. Dug my spring flower bed out from under a 3ft clay pile from all the work that I had done in the fall. The pussy toes were crushed. Hope he makes a full recovery. Crushed my toes today, does not feel good. Must have been walking in my sleep, kicked the doorframe. And more whining and crying, lost 90% of my irises. Oh well what s money for but to spend. If I could only find a dry spot in my yard. Things are not looking good for the bus tour in July, so if you are planning to go sign up now or it will be cancelled. Also make plans to attend the fall seminar. It has been booked for September 28th, which is the Sunday after the bulb sale. Have got a real good speaker, Brian Bergman, who has made great stride in hybridizing. So hope to see you there. Bye for now, see you in the warmer, drier weather. Susan ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1
2 In Memorium Frank Bellamy Dr. Frank Bellamy died on March 7, Frank had served the South Saskatchewan Lily Society as president and educator. Frank enjoyed writing science editorials for the SSLS Newsletter and the NALS Yearbook. He photographed the lilies displayed at our local show as well as the plantings at the historical garden. Frank was recognized for his dedication to education. He enjoyed sharing his love of science and was a true student himself obtaining many degrees including a doctrine of science. Frank also volunteered with many senior organizations where he was dedicated to the betterment of senior s lives. We express our sympathy to Frank s family and recognize that this lover of lilies has served lilium well. *** Cancel of Lily Tour July th *** We are sorry to report that we have been forced to cancel the Lily Tour due to lack of persons to fill the bus. We had 21 members and guests who indicated interest in participating in the journey to Saskatoon and the Honeywood s Lilies in Bloom celebration. To fill the bus we required 50+ to make the trip viable before the second week in June. If you are one of those who had booked their seat you can expect further notice either by or phone of the cancellation. However, I would like to remind everyone that you can individually travel to most of the events that were planned as they are open to all. The events that you will be welcome at in Saskatoon are: July The Canadian Prairie Lily Show, Friday and Saturday, July 18-19th at the Lawson Mall. The Horticultural Gardens at the Forestry Farm ($2.00 cost). July 20 th, Honeywood (Dr. A.J. Porter) Heritage Nursery, Parkside, Saskatchewan. Lilies in Bloom celebration: Tour and BBQ lunch. Respectively, SSLS Education Committee, Brian Porter and Dolores Nelson Annual Plant Sale and Meeting Our annual plant sale was held at the beautiful Regina Floral Conservatory on May 14, The sale was well attended. Members were pleased to see lily bulbs and lilies in pots to purchase. Thank you for ordering the bulbs Ron..Perennials and annuals were popular as well. Tomatoes and iris were plentiful. Many people did a quick stop on their way home from work, consequently, we allowed everyone to shop at one time which created a bottleneck effect. Next year, we may set up and price the day before to avoid this. We regret any delays at our sale. Our society meeting was held after the sale Twenty some people attended. Pizza and fresh watermelon were served. Beverages were also available. It was great to see some new members and friends out. Thanks for joining us. It's always nice to find some new treasure to plant in our yards. Plants leftover from our sale were donated to the Hort. Society for their plant sale. 2
3 Fall Seminar Here is an introduction to Brian,he is going to be your guest at the first bulb sale on September 27 and our keynote speaker for the Fall Seminar, September 28 th. Brian will be bring with him some of his unique bulbs which will grace our sales tables Speaker Profile Dr. Brian Bergman is a dentist and gardener. He has grown and hybridized lilies for 20 years, and has been involved in the Ontario Regional Lily Society in a number of capacities, including past president. Lilycrest Gardens is his growing and hybridizing field. He is in the process of introducing his lily hybrids commercially for garden growers. Introduction Dr. Brian Bergman s passion is hybridizing lilies for gardens. His growing and hybridizing field, Lilycrest Gardens, is located in St. Catharines, in the heart of Niagara Wine country. His field has 2,000 varieties of lilies with a total of 100,000 plants. Many are his own hybrids. He has been growing lilies since 1988, and started exhibiting at the Ontario Regional Lily Society (ORLS) shows shortly after that. With the support of the active hybridizing communities in the local and national societies, he began to hybridize to create lilies for gardens and over time have developed more than a thousand varieties. His lilies have won numerous awards at the ORLS and North American Lily Society Shows. In 2013, one of his winning entries had the highest bud count (over 30 buds), demonstrating the success of his hybridizing program. He was the winner of the North American Hornback Award in 2006 for hybridizing and growing the lily with the greatest advancement in hybridizing. Topic: Lilies - the Orchids of Perennials Lily hybridization has exploded in the last 50 years - from only hundreds of varieties in the 1950's to more than fifteen thousand today. This is a visual tour of the most exciting hybrids of today and tomorrow, drawing on examples of past, present and future varieties. Acquiring and growing lilies takes a little knowledge - a brief overview of the classification of lilies and how to grow them is included.
