Many are rebloomers, but a few have a very long single bloom period in early summer. These should be pruned after blooming, not before. Hybrid Musk roses are informally included among the Antiques, even thought they did not arrive until R. foetida bicolor. "Turkish Rose," "Poppy Rose." Species, before Parmentier, Belgium, before This beautifully rich once-blooming rose is named after one of histories preeminent villains, featured in The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. Known also as The Red Eminence (L'Éminence Rouge), the Cardinal served as minister to Louis XIII From 1624 to The petal reverse is near white, producing a lovely and dramatic effect. Hybrid spinossissima, pre-1820, the Netherlands. Deep magenta-red, single blooms in clusters with fluffy yellow stamens surrounding a yellow-green eye. Resembles a tiny, single tree peony bloom! Blooms once for several weeks in early summer. Own root. 4 Bernede, France, Comtesse de Labarathe, Comtesse Ouwaroff, Countess Bertha, Shell Rose Long lasting fragrance and full cupped, repetitious blooms set this rose apart from the pack! This beauty was named for the Duke of Brabant of Belgium and was introduced in France over 150 years ago and looks like it could be plucked from an old painting. President Theodore Roosevelt made this rose his favorite, often wearing a blossom in his lapel. Lévêque & Fils, France, Deep pink blend with mauve tips as the bloom ages. The pointed buds open to large globular floret, changing to very full old-fashioned blooms. This recurrent historic bloomer can also be used as a container rose and is cold tolerant. The pleasant rich Centifolia fragrance is of strong old rose with fruity undertone reminiscent of berries. Hybrid Foetida, Hybrid Spinosissima. Harison, USA, "Yellow Rose of Texas." This cross between two species roses is very hardy, disease resistant, and even a little shade tolerant. Light, pure yellow blooms in profusion in early summer. Small, dark green foliage. Nathan grows it on his rooftop deck. ARS rating Joseph Boyau Père, France, "Mademoiselle Malton This charming rose has a lovely strong tea fragrance. Double-petaled blooms return in delightful flushes throughout the season. Petals vary from light pink, to yellowish pink, to salmon-pink shading. Named after a famous French romantic ballet about a beautiful Sylph, (mythical spirit of the air) tragically enchanting a farmer on his wedding day. Requires winter protection. Guerin, France, Florida Rose, King of France, Zavala Rose A fragrant crimson beauty that like all old Chinas exhibits occasional white streaks. Emily de Zavala, wife of the Mexican minister to France, loved the roses at King Louis Philippe's court so much that when the Zavalas moved to Texas in 1835 to support the Texas Revolution she grew roses including 'Louis Philippe,' which became known as the "Zavala rose." Healthy, excellent repeater. Requires abundant winter protection! ARS This rose is a sport of Duchesse de Brabant and it s one of our favorite Teas. Prolific; blooms are exquisite and fragrant. Named for the wife of famous rose breeder and nurseryman, Benjamin Cant. ARS rating Bourbon; Discovered by Patterson, Pale pink blooms, similar to Souvenir de la Malmaison. Gorgeous! Portland; discovered by Nancy Lindsay, Iran, A favorite of ours for many years. Perfectly formed cushiony blooms of deep magenta are cloaked in bright green foliage. Strong, damask fragrance, tolerates some shade, and reblooms. It is said that this rose was discovered in the Persian (Iran) city of Rescht, and was brought to Europe in These roses are a great source for rose essential oil, which is used for rose perfume. Victoria grows it in her garden in a little shade. Wonderful! ARS rating 8.8. Portland; Vibert, France, Very large, very fragrant blooms of rich mauve-pink. Give her a little time to settle in and she will reward you! Big June show followed by periodic repeat performances. Named for one of Joan of Arc's supporters, the wife of Louis II, Duke of Anjou. ARS rating Hybrid Perpetual; Eude, France, Deep pink blooms, very tall plant, repeats in flushes all season. 6 Bourbon; Garcon, France, A sumptuous rose of infinite charm. Large, very full flowers in a deep magenta-purple, with a strong perfume. Vigorous; may be trained to cover a trellis or obelisk. Repeats. ARS rating Antoine Levet, France, Its silky cerise blossoms fade quickly to rose and pink, releasing a good measure of delicious scent. Its nearly thornless canes can be quite long and vertical, so this is a good candidate for pegging. ARS 8.1. Requires winter protection. Hybrid Musk, Sprays of 1" pink and white blooms cover this charming, airy shrub. Lovely with dark purple Clematis "jackmanii." ARS 8.8. Repeats. 5 Hybrid Musk; Bentall, UK, Rich honey colored blooms in profusion on a tall shrub that can be grown as a climber. Deeper color in cool weather, creamy in the height of summer heat. Foliage is small and fernlike, fragrant. This rose is large and resents pruning; let it go for best results! 3a-9b "Redleaf Rose." The highlight of this stunning rose is its deep purple, glaucous foliage with a bluish tinge. Sets clusters of urn-shaped hips that turn orange in the fall. Graceful vase shaped plant. Blooms are single, pink, and arrive in profusion in June. Beginning in the 1960's, Mr. Austin set out to cross antique roses with modern Floribundas and Hybrid Teas, combining modern color and vigor with old-fashioned faces and fragrance. Very large blooms of medium pink, deeply cupped with incurving petals. Strong old rose fragrance. An excellent rose, one of Victoria s favorites. Strong fragrance of apple, clove and tea. Hardy, clean and disease resistant The intense crimson color of this rose is nearly unbelievable! The fragrance starts light, but intensifies as the plant ages. Growth habit is somewhat sprawling. A very cold-hardy variety well suited to northern gardens. One of Victoria s favorites! Cupped blooms are of a delicate blush pink with a hint of yellow at the center, paler petals towards the outside. Fruity fragrance. Extremely coldhardy Very large, soft pink blooms, with many petals arranged around a perfect button eye. Large and vigorous, may be trained as a small climber or used at the back of the border. This stunning rose is closely related to the old Gloire de Dijon and it has inherited both its lovely glistening apricot color and its delicious fragrance of lilac and mimosa. Blooms hold their vibrant yellow color very well. This is the first yellow rose that Austin has introduced in over a decade, but this remarkable rose was worth the wait! Fat, round, red-tinged buds open to pale creamy yellow blooms that age to white, with a very mild apple fragrance. Upright, arching habit with very few thorns. Very lush and floriferous Produces masses of fragrant blooms throughout the summer. Attractive, loose-petalled, white flowers. Delicious Old Rose fragrance with hints of honey and almond blossom. Named to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of the poet John Milton. Lycidas eulogizes a drowned friend and is considered one of the finest short poems in the English language. Interestingly, it was Milton who introduced the word fragrance into the English language! 5 Name Height Color Description Zone ABOVE ALL OR 8-10' ORANGE Climbing Roses Climbing roses have long canes that are flexible when new, allowing them to be trained on a wall, fence, arbor, or other garden feature. Climbers bloom their best when trained out and up. They need not be heavily pruned; remove deadwood, trim back longest canes by 12" or so, and cut back lateral side shoots to 6-8". Ramblers are extremely vigorous, reaching 15'-30', and are suitable for covering large areas. Warner, UK, Clusters of salmon orange blooms in profusion in June, repeating thereafter. It has exceptionally clean, disease resistant foliage and lovely fat blooms. Very nice for an evening garden! 5 Austin, UK, The first of David Austin s English rose series, famously grown at Montisfont Abbey. Very large, cupped blooms on a vigorous plant suitable for training on a fence. Named for the famous British educator, florist and author in the mid-20th century who was instrumental in bringing antique roses back into fashion. Blooms once in early summer. ARS rating The darling oval buds open to reveal large, fragrant, double petaled, old-fashioned blooms that are produced in clusters and repeat throughout the summer and fall. Blooms are Coral-pink with lighter edges and will age to a pretty rose-pink. Fragrance is even stronger than its parent, New Dawn. Lax canes with dark green foliage make this rose easy to train.
