GEELONG BONSAI CLUB INCORPORATED MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MAY NEWS 2017 MAY GENERAL MEETING - WORKSHOP APRIL MEETING TOM COCKRAM FIGS DEMONSTRATION Tom presented an excellent detailed talk and demonstration with a wide range of his trees including a number of minis. He was also kind enough tp provide all of us with a detailed set of notes of the range of varieties.

MAY WORKSHOP The Month of May and December is when to attend to your pine trees and please bring them to the workshop for help from our experienced members on how best to treat and look after them. PINUS THUNBERGII:- JAPANESE BLACK PINE Pruning:-The first pruning of the roots will coincide with repotting and reduction of the crown. Always leave a good root system. Subsequent pruning of the branches can be done when wiring. Shorten the shoots by pinching out when they are still tender, in spring, and eliminate the central buds of each branch in autumn. Wiring can be done at any time except in spring and at least 3 months after repotting. With healthy trees it is possible to eliminate all the shoots every other year. Remove all needles that are too long or pendulous. APRIL 2017 SHOW BENCH

About Rui Ferreira I'll keep my facebook page with a mix of private and work life with Bonsai. If you have a problem with that look me up on Instagram where its only Bonsai (jardim-de-bonsai). Master Hotsumi Terakawa was my first Master, I've continued my studies with Master Salvatore Liporace whom I consider my Hoyakata! I'm an instructor of the European Bonsai School of Master Salvatore Liporace. I am the owner of Jardim de Bonsai in Tavira Algarve, a nursery specialising in Bonsai and in teaching all the necessary techniques related to this Art form. I am very eclectic in my work and choices. I'm used to working with Japanese species but also Northern and South European species as well as tropicals. Deciduous trees and evergreens are my passion, but I also work all kinds of coniferous trees. The material I usually work is from Yamadori (collected in nature) to nursery stock. Ballarat Bonsai Club Annual Show on 4-5th November 2017 (Cup Weekend). GBC Annual Show 11 th -12th November th -10 th November 2013 at the Masonic Hall, Regent Street, Belmont. A magnificent display of Bonsai and a well stocked trading table that offers Bonsai requisites for sale, including pots, tools, wire, books including trained and semi-trained Bonsai and nursery stock. Continuous demonstrations of shaping and repotting of bonsai each day. Meet and talk with Geelong s top Bonsai exponents. Light refreshments available. BONSAI ACTION FOR MAY Autumn Autumn is the time of year when our trees are slowing down, changing colour, losing leaves and preparing for winter. Continue Fertilizing through Autumn, but reduce the frequency as the trees slow down growth into winter. this will "Harden" the foliage off so it will be prepared for winter

Deciduous trees will be turning colour (hopefully) and then dropping leaves. Do not leave the spent leaves on your soil as it can keep it to wet and rot can result The weather should be cooling down now and trees will not need so much shade. Continue to turn your trees so that they get sufficient light on all sides. Make sure you give your trees enough space to grow without growing into the trees in other pots. Continue to check all the wire on your trees, and remove any that is digging into the bark. If wire has already marked the tree remove the wire immediately and leave the tree to grow on without pruning. Most trimming should have been finished by now. Every two years or so however, it is a good idea to trim back pines reasonably hard in autumn. The current year s growth can be cut off, leaving perhaps a few needles at the base. Buds will develop below the cut and subsequent growth will be more compact and the needles will be smaller. Deciduous trees can also be trimmed back to their minimum proportions after leaf fall. Evergreen trees will shed some of their old foliage at this time so cleaning away dead needles and leaves will improve their appearance, allow more air circulation and improve hygiene around the trees. This is a good time to give your plants a feed to encourage autumn fruit or spring flowers as there is still some time before the cold weather really sets in to stop plant growth. Continue to give weak doses every two to three weeks, especially of organic fertilizers that are high in potassium and phosphorus to discourage winter die back. Some trees may be potted during Autumn. These include evergreens and some of the Cypress species such as Cypressus, Picea, (spruce), Taxus (yew), and Pines. Azaleas may be potted during April. Pinch back new shoots on Cedars, Junipers and Spruce to maintain their outline. It is now too late to prune trees that flower in spring, such as camellias and early flowering varieties of Azaleas and Prunus. Heavy Branch Pruning of Pines should be done during April. Repot and Root Prune Flowering Quince and Cherry. Take Leafy Semi-hardwood cuttings of Banksia now. Apply Wire to Needle evergreens. clean defoliate fertilise fruit growth moss pots prune repot select shape snails sow spray sun trim water wire benches, bonsai area of fallen leaves to reduce slugs, snails and moisture clear out old needles from pines and cedars evergreen - high potash for winter vigour Deciduous only if still in leaf. Flower - potassium remove most fruit or berries to conserve energy for next crop has come to an end for winter, but keep checking wire, etc. Evergreens still grow remove because it keeps soil cold & wet; store on paper in pizza box for reuse prop up one edge for air circulation and to prevent rot from excessive moisture lightly if needed evergreens can still be repotted but do not feed repotted trees trees for autumn colour, from seed or nurseries check that top growth does not dominate tree scatter pellets around bonsai area broad bean in medium to large pots to aerate and put nitrogen into soil place trees in as much full sun as possible to bring trees back into shape reduce daily watering, but beware of windy days, which dry pots fast even when cool. to position any wayward branches and fine tune fine branches. Deciduous now too brittle

MAY PLANT PROFILE PINUS THUNBERGII:- JAPANESE BLACK PINE Originally from Korea and Japan, this pine has dark grey or dark pinkish-purple, deeply fissured trunk. The stiff pointed needles are in pairs 7-18cm long. Position:-Full sun, except on hottest summer days. Spray the crown during the summer. Vary exposure of the plant throughout the year so that light can be evenly distributed to the entire foliage. Feeding:-Once a month from early spring to autumn. Administer chelated iron at least twice a year. Watering:-Water evenly. The Black pine is very drought resistant but appreciates plenty of water provided the soil is quick draining. Check daily, but water only when the soil shows signs of dryness. In winter water very sparingly. Repotting:-In spring or late summer, every 2 to 3 years for young specimens and every 3 to 5 years for older ones, with 40% potting mix, 10% peat, and 50% coarse sand. Pruning:-The first pruning of the roots will coincide with repotting and reduction of the crown. Propagation:-From seed. In winter, soak fresh seeds overnight, discard any that float and use those that have sunk for sowing. Place outside and expose to frost, but protect from birds and rodents. Germination is reliable if seed is fresh. Some success may be had from cutting material with rooting hormone. Grafting onto seedling stock of other pines is also possible. THIS N THAT NURSERY CRAWL 14th MAY The intent is to leave at 830 and visit Bonsai Orient/Thomastown, Baloc Ardeer and Bonsai Art/Dandenong. Please me or call Maxine if you intend to go by May meeting.. If we don't have enough starters the crawl will not proceed. These include the annual Rendezvous Convention by Brussel s Bonsai, the American Bonsai Society (ABS) & Bonsai Clubs International (BCI)

Convention. His talent as a demonstrator allows him to entertain his audience while passing on his extensive knowledge and produce exceptional bonsai from technically difficult material. His artistic ability extends beyond just creating bonsai but also to drawing bonsai. He has a background in painting and drawing and can use this to clearly present the vision of the completed bonsai even before starting work on the tree. THE National Bonsai & Penjing Collection of Australia (NBPCA) about 85 trees on display many of which can be seen on its website ( SUGGESTION BOX Let s reintroduce the suggestion box. Please take the time to consider your ideas of how to improve the way we do things to make our club even more than what it is today. Ideas also about topics during the year you would like discussed, speakers to invite, number or workshops versus speakers etc. Additionally what are the reasons you regularly attend and what would be the reasons some of our members only occasionally attend and what are the contributing factors why some only remain members for a short time.
