4 COLUMBUS BONSAI SOCIETY SEPTEMBER AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT. THE RABBIT HOLE H ello fellow club members, I m looking forward to seeing you all at this month s club picnic at Oakland Nursery. This is one of my favorite meetings of the year, I enjoy the fellowship and opportunity to sell and buy extra material from my fellow club members. The September meeting also marks the start of our club s election process for board members with the introduction and nomination of a slate of candidates. After two years as Club President I will be stepping aside and will not seek the job for a third year. Luckily there are plenty of qualified candidates who are willing to step forward and lead our club. The Board has worked hard to provide a wide variety of educational programs for your benefit over the last two years. We are currently working on the program schedule for next year. I have been soliciting ideas from club members on what they would like to see on the schedule and received some good input. If you would like to see something on the schedule for next year and have not had a chance to express your wishes, please find me at the picnic and let me know. A reminder about our upcoming programming, the club will host guest artist Mauro Stemberger at our November meeting. The date and time for the meeting will be a change from our normal meeting schedule. Our November club meeting will be on Tuesday November 17 th at 5:30 pm at Franklin Park Conservatory. Thank you again for allowing me to serve as your president for the last two years. I look forward to continuing my service to the club on the board and as the storekeeper. See you all at the picnic. Mike

5 COLUMBUS BONSAI SOCIETY SEPTEMBER A TALE OF THREE BLOGS. A t the August meeting I was asked about yellow leaves on a tree. I thought of several reasons for this but I forgot one, that as far as I know, we don't often consider in Columbus. Root aphids can often cause weakening, stunted growth, and yellow leaves on our trees. Root aphids are often confused with good mycorhiza growth but they are NOT a beneficial fungus symbiont. Root aphids tend to be wooly aphids, making it even harder to tell them from fungus on first glance. They are often hard to get rid of as well and the damage is often complete before it is diagnosed. Fortunately, Jonas Dupuich has several blog posts on how to recognize aphids, treatment and a follow up on the treated trees. His final results are still pending, but the preliminary observations are posted. In any event, there appears to be no damage from treatment, and some trees look to be recovered and thriving. The blog series are: Zack Clayton

6 COLUMBUS BONSAI SOCIETY SEPTEMBER TREE OF THE MONTH BOUGAINVILLEA B ougainvillea was one of the tropicals that I wrote about in 2009 as a flowering tropical used for bonsai. There s an article that Jose offered sometime ago on our club website. However, I couldn t find an article that covers Bougainvillea care. I have to confess that I sold the Bougie I had to Sarah before moving south, so I ll rely on a number of sources and my past experience on successfully keeping one alive in Columbus Ohio. Bougainvilleas are native to South and Central America which means that they are a tropical that needs winter protection. In nature, they are a woody evergreen vine. At Disney World I ve seen them used as a hedge and as a vine to cover a retaining wall. They come in a variety of colors, red, violet, orange, copper, white and fuchsia. There is a cultivar with variegated leaves too. The flowers are not made up of petals but are actually colored bracts which appear at the end of new growth. The true flower is a tiny white trumpet that appears at the tip of the bracts. They have two negative features, one is that they have thorns; the other is that because they are a vine, if you buy a starter plant it will take forever to thicken. Specimen Bougie bonsai are usually landscape salvage material. Cultivation: Temperature: While they are tropical (zone 9 and above) they can survive a frost but will lose their leaves and may go dormant. Their optimum growing temperature range is during the day and at night. Mine survived nicely in the basement under fluorescent lights during the winter. I suspect that the lights raised the temperature several degrees when they were on, so I got diurnal variation that triggered blooming. Lighting: I used 3 and 4 light fixtures with the timer giving them 14 hours a day while they were inside. Once the temperatures were above 60 they went outside until fall temperatures were below 55. Again they may drop their leaves moving in and out and won t have good leaf cover if they aren t getting enough light. Watering: Water when they are dry. When you do water make sure it flows out of the bottom of the pot to ensure deep root development. Bougies are reported to be drought tolerant and if you continuously over water, you ll get rootrot. Outdoors in the summer, you ll need to adjust your watering. One of my sources said that summer flowering is encouraged by letting them dry out to the point of wilting for 3-4 hours then water. But only do this once and flowering should follow within two weeks. Fertilizing: Bougainvilleas are acid loving, so use a Photo from Bonsaimary.com fertilizer that is for azaleas or camellias. Use it at half strength every two weeks. Pruning/Training: Because they bloom on new growth pruning should be done right after the old blooms fade. To a point shorter than the silhouette you re trying to maintain. Seal your cuts to prevent rot. The bloom cycle is 4-6 weeks, so a healthy Bougie will take lots of pruning. Each time you prune the plant should respond by creating multiple shoots, so selective thinning will be needed to maintain your foliage pads. Wiring is more difficult as the wood is difficult to bend once it lignifies. This hardness is noted by the use of deadwood on large specimen Bougainvilleas. Normally you won t wee deadwood on a tropical plant as it would rot quickly. This also means you ll need to wire new growth before it fully hardens. Bonsai styling may be informal upright, cascade, twin trunk and literati. Pests: They are susceptible to fungus so spraying with a fungicide is good prevention. You should also watch for aphids and scale. Use the Bayer systemic regularly. In the summer I sprayed mine with Orchard spray when I sprayed my apple trees. Repotting: It seems that Bougainvillea like to be pot bound so they may be repotted every 2-3 years. Repot in the spring when you see new growth, usually April June. A good mix is 25% Turf ace, 25% small lava rock and 50% potting mix. When repotting, do not prune the roots to severely. Remove only too long or woody roots that are circling. Keep as much of the finer roots as possible. Be careful, the fine roots can easily be ripped and damaged. Use a deep pot. Propagation: Cutting may be taken in the spring (April- June). Air layering is also possible. Nurserymen use bottom heat to promote rooting. Keep tem moist. Cuttings 2-12 may be rotted. A popular variety for bonsai is Pink Pixie as it has smaller leaves. B. glabra is also used for its shinny darker green leaves and magenta bracts.. Ken Schultz

The tree is starting to concentrate growth in the roots and use less energy on the foliage. Lower the nitrogen content of your fertilizer this month. Switch to a fertilizer. The lack of nitrogen slows foliar growth, which will force the branches to toughen up to deal with winter's wrath. This is the second best time for repotting. Once the leaves turn color, the tree is dormant. You may transplant deciduous after this. This is better done in the beginning of the month. This is a good time to collect wild trees. Bring tropicals back indoors towards the end of the month, or when temperatures consistently drop below 50 F at night. Spray your tropicals with pesticide before you bring them indoors. This may take multiple applications over a few weeks. Watch out for fall pests. Squirrels are especially harmful, as they are digging and foraging for winter.
