3 COLUMBUS BONSAI SOCIETY MAY 2013 This Month s Program BOXWOOD DEMO ON COLLECTED STOCK FPC Z ack Clayton and Mike Thornhill will be working on some collected boxwood stock. They will be demonstrating styling, and repotting. Think it is too late to repot boxwoods? No way there is still time. In fact, they encourage everyone to bring their own boxwoods to work on. What is that you say? You do not have a boxwood. That is okay, Mike Thornhill has several Morris Midget Boxwoods he will have on hand for sale. Of course, if you do not want to wait until 2 pm to work on your Bonsai, or if you have a question which will not wait join us at 1 pm for a Bonsai Bee and get both issues dealt with while you socialize and wait for the feature presentation. 4 COLUMBUS BONSAI SOCIETY MAY AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT. Random Thotz - now from the President T he saga of the dog continues. You know I take cuttings every year. Some do well. Really, most of them do well; I have more than I probably need. I do it mostly because they are an inexpensive way to have consistent material for experiments or forests. This year I had a big under the bed storage unit set up and filled up with new starts when I went out and found it upside down on the ground.??? It is heavy. It did not just get up and move itself (the wheels are broken and will not roll.) It is high off the ground. A couple of days later I found it there again. The big clumsy dog gets over the fence by going to a bench on his side of the yard, over the fence and walks along that bench - knocking the cuttings off in the process. Grumble cuss. Put up another layer of fence. My daughter was watching when he tried it again. Jumps onto the bench, Turns, and - Amazed dog look what is this doing here? I cannot get across. Then it walks the length of that bench looking over the back fence and barking at the dog back there. OH JOY. That is what has been pruning my trees. Does anyone have a transformer and some insulators? And he is still getting across the new fence somehow, we just have not caught him at it yet, but at least the benches seem safe over there now. - Update - It seems related to how snugly the mower parks under the deck where I charge it (battery-powered mower). On a more tree related topic, Bonsai Tonight ( has an excellent two-part post on air layering. In this, case Hinoki Cypress. He is not sure how well it will work on this species, but he bought two great specimens and then found they had an obnoxious graft line below the soil of the pot. So - time to find out if they will air layer Actually it is more of a ground layer in a pot, but Michael Hagedorn (crataegus.com) shows the technique on one of them during a visit to Jonas nursery. Part one: - prep work Part two: - the good stuff Michael adds a couple of tweaks in his air layering technique that I want to try. They make sense and should increase success. The survey is coming. Look for it this month. Consider it a personal inventory of where you are in Bonsai. What you have done. What you would like to learn next. What your favorite things are. It really is an opportunity to realize your own achievements and plan what you next ones may be. And it will help the club support you over the next year. What would you like to learn or see? Who would you like to see demonstrate a technique? It is all there to feed us, but you have to play to win. I was working on the Boxwood I donated to FPC at the last volunteer session. It got repotted and trimmed. The old soil was Haydite and comtil that the Conservatory got in last year. I really like the results of that mix. The tree had lots of new growth and vigorous roots. It should be available at the meeting this month for you to see. The collection is improving monthly with the care and attention by the staff and the volunteer group. They are paying attention to our advice and there is renewed investment in the trees and display areas. Go see the courtyard and Zen Terrace if you have not lately. Zack

5 COLUMBUS BONSAI SOCIETY MAY 2013 Uses for WD Protects silver from tarnishing. 2. Removes road tar and grime from cars. 3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings. 4. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots. 15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors. 16. Keeps scissors working smoothly. 17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on both home and vehicles doors. 18. It removes that nasty tar and scuff marks from the kitchen flooring. It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks. 19. Remove those nasty Bug guts that will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! 20. Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide. 21. Lubricates gearshift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers Rids kids rocking chair and swings of squeaky noises. 23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open. 24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close. 25. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell). 35. Removes all traces of duct tape. 36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain. 37. Florida's favorite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.' 38. The favorite use in the state of New York, it protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements. 39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states. 40. Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch. 41. It is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray it on the marks and wipe with a clean rag. 42. Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone! 43. If you spray it inside a wet distributor cap, it will displace the moisture, allowing the engine to start. P.S. As for that Basic, Main Ingredient... Well... it's FISH OIL... Found on the internet by Ken Schultz

COLUMBUS BONSAI SOCIETY MAY INTRODUCTION TO BONSAI OR BONSAI BEGINNERS: A wrap up report. B ONSAI BEGINNERS, an introductory course presented by the Columbus Bonsai Society took place on Saturday, April 27 th at the Oakland Nursery Education building, with Dan Binder, Zack Clayton, Tom Holcomb and myself leading (presenting?). A total of 18 students took the class. Original plans called for a student group of 15, with one overflow seat. On class day all registered participants arrived to take their spots, as well as two additional students. There is perhaps no better indication that there is public interest in this sort of class than the fact that people were essentially scalping tickets to get in! Our class began with sign in and breakfast pastries at 9:30, followed by our formal opening at 10:00AM. Tom Holcomb lead a round of introductions, and then it was off on the highlights of various bonsai topics: Dan talked about the history of bonsai as well as potting mixes, Tom spoke about wiring, styles and pots, and Zack covered tools and pruning techniques. Tracy and Jerry Freeland and Rick Clark joined the Gang of Four for the actual hands on session later in the afternoon. After a lunch that included Binder s soon to be famous White Bean and chicken chili, the students got their hands on two different kinds of junipers, a Serrisa, or a flowering quince, each participant getting a total of two trees. All had a great time getting a bit of dirt under their fingernails, and some great looking trees in training emerged from the process. Just wanted to say thanks to you and your team today for a fantastic day of Bonsai, I learned a lot from the instructors alongside a group of wonderful people. You guys did a great job and it is appreciated, looking forward to my Bonsai adventures! Thanks, Brett Opinions expressed that day, and by later indicate that students were happy with the class length and content, and were excited enough in the subject and concerned enough about keeping their plants alive that they hope for a follow up session in a month or so. Stay tuned! All students in the class became CBS members for 2013 as part of their tuition. A warm welcome to all of them, we hope to see you at many meetings. Mark Passerrello

COLUMBUS BONSAI SOCIETY MAY COMING UP IN JUNE AND AUGUST T here are 2 spaces left in Rob MacGregor's June 16th Literati workshop and 5 in the Cascade workshop which were announced at April's meeting. August with Owen Reich will be a "Tree Critique and a workshop" Details to be announced. Owen studied bonsai in Japan under Keiichi Fujikawa a second generation bonsai artist who apprenticed under the late Saburo Kato at Mansai-en. (We have books in the club library by Saburo Kato). Owen now lives in Nashville TN. He has a degree in ornamental horticulture. His favorite bonsai are deciduous and broad leafed evergreens. He is also known for his creation of beautiful Kusamono, (accent plantings). Owen is interested in improving American bonsai and providing quality workshop materials. CBS 2013 Bonsai Show Volunteers Needed This is only two months away, so sign up sheets for the various committees will be circulated at the May and June meetings. The set-up workgroup will set up and drape the tables on Friday afternoon/ evening. Tree registration and check in will follow on Friday evening and early Saturday morning. This year we will need a Food Coordinator. Security will be scheduled. Volunteers to assist the vendors in bringing in their stock are needed. Then after 4 PM on Sunday volunteers will be needed to check out trees, assist the vendors and help with tear down. But most importantly, you are asked to enter a couple of trees in the show. In the short time-frame between now and our show ALL members are asked to help get the word out to their co-workers, church members, nurseries where they shop and any other place you can get to hang up a show flier.

11 COLUMBUS BONSAI SOCIETY MAY 2013 From the Circulation Desk of the C.B.S. Library The CBS Library Materials List is now available in spreadsheet format on our CBS website's Library Tab. Users can Sort, Filter and Search the list. There are a few little buttons at the bottom of the embedded spreadsheet that allow you to download the spreadsheet, or open a full page version in a new window. Users can then the librarian at CBSLibrary@hotmail.com to request materials. Another new feature is a column indicating if the Book has been reviewed and the information to access the review. For instance NL Feb (Schultz) would indicate that the review is in the Newsletter, Feb 2011 issue, and Ken Schultz authored the review. We hope this will make the collection more available to the membership. Let us know your thoughts. We have completed the Accession Process for all the Books in the Club s Collection. All have a Card and Pocket for ease of Check Out. Beverlee Wilson, Librarian John Young, Asst Librarian CBSLibrary@hotmail.com Remember all of those old dusty VHS tapes in the library? The ones you were afraid to check out for fear they would break? Now they are available on high quality DVD s. Renewal Memberships may be paid for more than one year at a time.

You should move tropicals outdoors now. Introduce tropicals to the sunlight gradually. Be careful of night time temperatures <45 F. You may also leave tropicals indoors year round, but most will benefit from the outdoors. Most deciduous trees have the leaves out sometime in May. Holding back fertilizer for pines can keep their needles shorter. Perform air-layers on trees once their leaves are fully emerged. Start fertilizing with a balanced or fertilizer for most trees. Trees will be using more water now that they are actively growing. Re-pot any later emerging species, and any that show signs of being pot bound they won't make it through July and August if you don't. Pinch or cut back long pine candles to encourage back budding and a more dense overall growth You can wire branches on all trees, but be careful of buds and swelling branches caused by growth.
