Western Turf Diseases BASF s provide rapid and long-lasting residual control of 27 turf diseases, the most problematic of which are shown and described here. On the following pages, you will find recommended spray programs that deliver preventive and/or curative control of these diseases and others, as well as a list of those diseases and the BASF products that control them. Anthracnose Primarily a disease of annual bluegrass and bentgrass greens, anthracnose (Colletotrichum cereale) may also infect fescue and hybrid bermudagrass. Anthracnose is opportunistic on well-established greens with compacted soils; the disease is made worse by common stressors of turfgrass, including low mowing heights, drought, excessive shade, and low nitrogen fertility. Drought and high temperatures result in foliar symptoms that may progress to the basal stage of the disease, which is very destructive. Symptoms are variable with the turf type and season. Foliar symptoms in summer and winter include small yellow, orange, or reddish spots or patches, thinning, and blade discoloration. Black-haired fruiting bodies are distinctive for an anthracnose infection. Basal symptoms occur mainly in spring or fall, but can also present during the hottest summer months and may follow a season of poor turf conditions, such as waterlogging, desiccation, and pressure from other diseases. Crowns of plants and bases of stems may appear watersoaked or blackened. Managing anthracnose before it progresses to the basal stage is critical for maintaining turf quality and avoiding stand loss. above: Anthracnose 2 WESTERN TURF SOLUTIONS GUIDE

at left: Rapid blight Rapid Blight Rapid blight is a summer-to-fall disease of cool season turf caused by a primitive net slime mold (Labyrinthula spp.). It affects bluegrasses, bentgrass, and perennial ryegrass. Symptoms become apparent with warm temperatures under high sodium soil conditions. These conditions are favored by low water regimens, introduction of salt or seawater, and arid climates. Chlorosis and poor stand may be the first indication that the disease is developing. Rapid blight can progress very quickly under high environmental and pathogen pressure, resulting in yellow to brown discolored turf in rough or irregular patches with a border and individual leaf blades that appear water-soaked. Fungicide selection and proper cultural techniques are required to manage this destructive disease. Note that anthracnose commonly coexists with active rapid blight infections; solid programs will provide for management of both diseases. WESTERN TURF SOLUTIONS GUIDE 3

above: Brown ring patch Brown Ring Patch Brown ring patch is caused by the pathogen Waitea circinata, and the disease also goes by the name Waitea patch. It occurs mainly in spring and fall, and affects annual bluegrass as well as creeping bentgrass, most noticeably on greens. Symptoms include bright yellow patches in the early stages of disease; ring-shaped patches turn brown and turf may thin out. In bentgrass stands, patches can be elongated or even crescent-shaped. The interior portion of the rings is often dark green, and in severe infections, it may be raised above slightly sunken diseased areas. Infections and symptoms are short-lived, but brown ring patch can affect both aesthetics and ball roll, so treatment is indicated on greens and in high quality turf stands. Fairy Ring Fairy rings can occur through the growing season in any region of the country and in cooland warm-season turfgrasses. A number of soil- and thatch-inhabiting fungi belonging to the mushroom-forming group basidiomycetes cause fairy rings of different types. The presence of a fungal growth under the turfgrass is indicated by any of the following: an irregular pattern of turfgrass death or a ring of dead turfgrass; a dark green stimulated ring of turfgrass; or a ring or an arrangement of mushrooms or puffballs with no other effects to the turfgrass. Turfgrass under lower moisture and watering conditions as well as lower fertility and higher thatch production is most susceptible to fairy ring development. Sand-based greens can be more susceptible. Knowing whether you have developed hydrophobic conditions in your soil profile may dictate a routine wetting agent program to assist with moisture retention and breakdown of the organic layers. Applications of s and wetting agents have provided relief but may not eradicate the possible ring formation. left: Fairy ring types Photos: Dr. Mike Fidanza, Pennsylvania State University 4 WESTERN TURF SOLUTIONS GUIDE

at left: Pythium spp. Photo: N.C. State University below: Pythium root dysfunction Pythium Diseases The Pythium (Pythium spp.) complex of turf diseases can cause a variety of symptoms, including foliar, crown, and root rots. Susceptible turf includes bluegrass, bentgrass, ryegrass, fescue, and bermudagrass. Disease development is favored by warm and humid weather, especially when temperatures exceed 70 F, and the disease can spread very quickly, reducing turf quality overnight. Mycelia are visible as a cottony web in the morning dew. Foliar symptoms can present as spots, rings, or streaks, typically in low-lying areas where water is slow to drain. Early discoloration eventually becomes matted and greasy-appearing as the patch sizes increase and blighted areas die back. Crown and root symptoms are slower-to-progress and may be more difficult to diagnose. Pathogen confirmation by a laboratory is recommended. 12 Western Weeds BASF offers highly effective pre- and postemergent s that control Western turfgrass weeds. The five most prevalent Western weeds are shown and described here. On the pages that follow, recommended weed control spray programs and a Weed Spectrum Overview detail how BASF products control these weeds. Crabgrass Crabgrass is a summer annual grass commonly found infesting turfgrass stands. There are several species that are commonly found in the Western region: large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), and small or smooth crabgrass (D. ischaemum). Crabgrass germinates when soil temperatures exceed 57-64º F for extended periods of time in spring, and dies following decreased temperatures and the first killing frost in fall. Crabgrasses tiller aggressively if left unchecked, and are capable of rooting at tiller nodes. Crabgrass germinates readily in bare areas, so a strong, dense turfgrass sward is a good defense against infestation. above: Crabgrass in turfgrass Smooth crabgrass has a smooth, membranous ligule ( mm), with sparse hairs around the collar region, but no hairs are visible on the rest of the plant. Large crabgrass has an uneven, membranenous ligule ( mm) with dense hairs on the collar and overall leaf surface. All species have a rolled vernation. There are several effective pre- and postemergent s labeled for controlling crabgrass in cool- and warm-season turfgrass, which can be referenced in the Weed Spectrum Overview in this guide. 1 0 WESTERN TURF SOLUTIONS GUIDE

Goosegrass Goosegrass (Eleusine indica) is another summer annual grass that is commonly found infesting turfgrass stands where the turfgrass is thinned from biotic or abiotic factors. Goosegrass also thrives in compacted areas such as driveways, cart paths, or other areas subject to high traffic. Plant growth is similar to crabgrass, but overall plant morphology is different. Goosegrass has a fringed, membranous ligule (0.9 mm), and a prostrate growth habit. Often, the center of the tiller is whitish-silver. Seedheads are shaped loosely like bird s feet. Sheaths are typically hairy, with sparse hairs found elsewhere on the plant. Goosegrass has a folded vernation. There are several effective pre- and postemergent s labeled for controlling goosegrass in cool- and warm-season turfgrass, which can be referenced in the Weed Spectrum Overview in this guide. Spurge Several species of spurge commonly infest turfgrass, including spotted (E. maculate) and prostrate (E. humistrata) spurges. Spurges are summer annual broadleaf weeds that can be easily identified by their round leaves and white, milky sap that is exuded upon physical plant injury. Spotted spurge is a mat-forming plant that can reach up to 20 inches in diameter. Leaves often have a reddish water mark in the center, a trait shared by prostrate spurge. The species are difficult to distinguish from one another. Typically, spotted spurge does not root at the nodes, but prostrate spurge will. A strong, healthy turfgrass sward is the first step to preventing spurge infestation. above: Goosegrass; spurge Photo: Dr. Shawn Askew, Virginia Tech below: Yellow nutsedge Photo: Dr. Jim Brosnan, University of Tennessee Yellow Nutsedge Sedges are not grasses, but perennial grass-like plants that are commonly found in turfgrass stands that tend to remain wet. Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) is easily identified by its triangular stem and unique, spikey, golden flower. Yellow nutsedge can reach 12 inches in height. This troublesome weed persists via rhizomes and underground tubers, called nutlets. There are several s that can control yellow nutsedge, but reducing persistent wet soil conditions can also reduce populations of this weed. Hand pulling does not typically reduce population levels, as nutlets and other underground structures typically break off and remain underground. WESTERN TURF SOLUTIONS GUIDE 11
