3 Welcome Dear customer, Welcome to our 2018 / 2019 catalogue, thank you for your business during One cannot help but think we enter 2018 with more uncertainty than we might normally expect. Brexit, plant health issues such as Xylella and a general concern for biosecurity are issue s our businesses need to adapt and take note of. As a producer on the edge of Europe with some dramatic changes in trade and politics, unprecedented in the last 50 years, our business is very much conscious of planning for the future. Some plans are well underway, mentioned later in catalogue, to mitigate these risks. On the positive side the last two years have delivered business growth. There seems to be reason for hope of increased consumer and industry spending on plants in the coming years. Consumers are making more connection with environmental, health and social issues addressed by plants. The consumer is becoming more engaged than industry with such issues which one would hope gives our green industry greater market opportunities. As a company focused on business to business sales of young plants we have been working in line and sometimes ahead of these market trends. Due to our peripheral location as a business bringing new plants and concepts is critical to our survival and engagement of customers and their customers. To do so we must be on trend but even more importantly on time! To be on trend and on time we must be early adapters and timely with delivery. This comes at a cost which must be recouped, FitzGerald Nurseries in the past, present and future must be a company focused on innovation. In fact, we have been awarded nationally and internationally for this quality. As we know new innovations sometimes lead to tears of angst and more times to tears of joy. During 2017 we have worked hard towards bringing more joy to our customers while bottling the angst for our own consumption and learning. Through our laboratory and nursery research we have made good progress and are pleased to bring you our ranges. Like all catalogues ours has a deadline. We have entries just not quite ready, but Melanie will keep you informed during 2018 should new entries come ready. You are also very welcome to discuss any of your specific requirements with us if there are any plants you would like us to produce on your behalf. We look forward to working with you in the future and engaging with you to help in any way we can in the coming years. Yours sincerely, Pat FitzGerald Managing Director 03

10 Spotlight MyPlant It is now 10 years since MyPlant was voted best garden plant concept by European Garden press members at Plantarium We were of course delighted and honoured by this prestigious award. However, with the great economic crash that followed we had to bear down and work hard to ensure this niche range and our MyPlant brand kept its philosophy and core focus on plants with attributes in keeping with this philosophy. Many of these plants are produced from tissue culture - in fact most are. This makes them more expensive as young plants than cutting produced plants, but fetching a premium in retail environment returning more profit. Our MyPlant collection brings together a range of dramatic, functional and colourful patio container plants and high impact foliage plants. These plants can be used to great effect in small garden spaces and drought tolerance has been considered in the selection process, especially for our container plant selections. Through the MyPlant collection we have introduced some of our most successful best sellers such as Yucca Bright Star (Award winner IPM 2008), Astelia Silver Shadow (Glass Tulip 2014 nominee Netherlands), multi award winner Libertia Goldfinger, the wonderful Tropicanna range, Nandina Obsessed, the stunning Cordyline Charlie Boy, the exotic looking Fascicularia bicolor and many other promotional varieties. MyPlant is our focus for innovation in those special plants for which FitzGerald Nurseries has become known in many markets. We look forward to introducing many more wonderful trendsetting plants through our MyPlant category over the coming years. MyPlant is more than a name. 14 Plant Production Over 27 years of production we have gone through phases of change reflecting market demand changes and competitiveness. As a company operating on the edge of Europe FitzGerald Nurseries more than any company in the industry must always be conscious of our need to innovate. This consciousness has continually driven the ethos and the need for innovation. Nescessity is the mother of Invention. During this period our focus on foliage plants for outdoor spaces, in particular garden containers, has evolved and our production specialities have evolved to match this niche area. FitzGerald Nurseries is a niche production focused company, we do not do A-Z. We focus on the plant, its suitability to our niche focus and its suitability to our production strengths. However being a company at the edge of Europe we must also find other strengths and we must have a safe route to market. Over the last 10 years we have worked hard on route to market and we distribute our plants effectively through the Netherlands to all parts of Europe and from Dublin Airport to USA, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Africa and Middle East. We have also turned our remoteness into a strength! Since January 2017 we have developed our own biosecurity strategy system to protect our production against disease and pest contamination. FitzGerald Nurseries does not import any plant material except material produced under sterile conditions in laboratory conditions. Only mother plants for tissue culture production of new plant varieties are imported into a special quarantined area beside the nursery and our laboratory. Our production in recent years has focused on our main core competencies and much of our production is pre-booked ahead of production. While we carry all our own mother plants we generally only produce to order or order predictions from customers. We have three production sites in Ireland, two nurseries in Kilkenny and one laboratory production location in Co. Wexford. We work with 5 key plant tissue culture suppliers ensuring security of supply for our key tissue culture lines and our Irish Primrose, EverColor and some other lines are 100% produced on our own locations. FitzGerald Nurseries does not trade young plants from other young plant suppliers as we see our company mission as a specialist supplier to our nursery and other young plant company partners. 14

15 Variety Development At FitzGerald Nurseries we have evolved an innovation led strategy and our business is heavily focused on developing our own new varieties as well as working with like minded breeders and breeders representatives worldwide. Through this strategy we have developed a stunning range of plant varieties focused on our core production competencies and market perception. Every year we introduce at least one of our own varieties and a number of varieties from our breeder partners. The 2018 season is no exception! During 2018 we will introduce our most recent innovation in EverColor: Carex morrowii EverGlow. Everglow is a major breakthrough in the range as it for the first time introduces orange foliage into an evergreen variegated Carex. This variety is a wonderful addition to the range especially for Autumn and Halloween promotion. Watch out in Autumn We are also introducing a number of other foliage plants one of which is Phormium Blondie. Blondie in our opinion will be an outstanding addition to our MyPlant range and we are convinced it will become an industry best seller. After many years of trying and failing in our tissue culture production our Cordyline Charlie Boy has finally emerged in large numbers and we will be offering significant numbers during Keep in touch during it s going to be an exciting year for these and other new introductions! 15

18 Spotlight Irish Primrose Our Irish Primrose range is continuing to gain recognition amongst the garden media and public as a truly unique and ironically a somewhat innovative step in the development of the primrose in commercial horticulture. We have stuck with the current variety range for this year just adding Primula Innisfree Pink to the collection. Despite the fact that this style of primrose dates back four hundred years (right back to Shakespearean/Elizabethan times) as a garden trend, commercial Horticulture has lost sight of the beginnings of the primrose as a garden plant of great significance. Our Irish Primrose collection currently is made up of two distinctive groups. The Kennedy Irish Primrose range is the one with distinctivly chocolate foliage turning many heads with this uniqely Irish originated dark foliage and contrasting flowers. At IPM Essen 2013 the New Plant judging committee were so impressed that the Kennedy Irish Primrose Claddagh was awarded best perennial for The Kennedy Irish Primrose Drumcliff in 2011 and the Irish Primrose Moneygall in 2013 have been presented to President and Mrs Obama at the White House in Washington. The stories of our Irish Primrose range are too many to mention here, but you can catch up on them on our nursery blog. We market the Irish Primrose range as 4cm plugs or retail ready in 0.5L pots. Full marketing package for retail sales including labels, posters, bench tape and other POS materials are available. Our image library is an important part of the Irish Primrose information pack and pictures have been published worldwide in many important garden magazine, trade journals, perennial publications and online media sites. We would be deligthed to discuss this truly unique plant program with you. Check out Irish Primrose on 18

23 Vegetables/Beotanics TM The idea to produce sweet potato like many good ideas came from a question and a challenge: Is it possible to grow sweet potato in Ireland and Northern Europe? The general consensus was No, but the question deserved a proper answer. This thought combined with general awareness of the importance of healty food crops all had impact on the thoughts leading into the sweet potato project. From there on it was only a small step to add other food crops into this range and we will continue to look out for more. 23

24 Spotlight Beotanics TM Beo in Gaelic means live or life. Our nursery shares our farm with an ancient Celtic farm settlement known in Gaelic as Rath. Therefore we have a constant reminder of the importance of agricultural human endeavour, centuries of progress and the linked heritage. Living with this history and reminded of the constant need for adaptation of the human diet to work and lifestyle circumstances we have developed this concept name for our food plants program. The Celts were descendant from the first European farmers their forefathers from the east and south marking a progression from a society of hunter gatherer to a society based on farming. Beotanics focuses on novel and nutritious vegetables for modern dietary & lifestyle needs. Our aim through the utilisation of our horticultural knowlege is to develop production of novel vegetables or fruits to be grown sustainably in our Northern European climate using the modern methods available to us. Some of these vegetables are those European Explorers of the 16th Century undervalued and left in the Americas. Work began on the first crop, Sweet Potato, during We now use elite virus free in-vitro stock material and we continue only to work with cleanest possible plants in our crop development. This exotic form of potato has entered our farm environment. This is not a new crop to Europe but in today s European agriculture it is not common. Sweet potato had been cultivated in Portugal possibly even before the now commonly known potato. Our endeavours in sweet potato and other roots was treated by some as even more bemusing than the then exotic Solanum potato in 18th and 19th Century in Europe, which according to historians was sometimes treated with the mistrust of its relative the Deadly Nightshade. 24

25 Ipomoea batatas Bellevue ( LA ) PBR EU 2014/2364 Ipomoea batatas Bellevue PBR was bred to provide an orange fleshed, copper skinned variety with superior storage root shape, skin smoothness and disease resistance. And on top of that Bellevue is a most attractive variety due to its predominantely purple foliage. Bellevue is not sweet when freshly harvested and when baked the sugar content is slightly less than in Beauregard. The roots of Bellevue however have excellent storage qualities. Ipomoea batatas Burgundy ( LA ) PBR EU 2014/2362 Ipomoea batatas Burgundy is a new and astoundingly flavoursome variety. It has deep orange flesh, a red skin and is very consistent in shape. But the moss amazing thing is the sugar content in baked Burgundy roots - it is nearly twice as high as in Beauregard. In the words of some who have tasted it its simply AWESOME. Chefs are loving it and growers will be glad to hear that it s a variety that is easy to grow, has attractive foliage and high flavour straight out of the ground. Beotanics TM Ipomoea batatas Bonita PBR Ipomoea batatas Bonita is a culinary delight. It was developed for the burgeoning white flesh sweet potato market. Bonita has the flaky texture of a baking potato given a 28% dry matter content and something unique a delicate nutty flavor. The shape is surprisingly consistent whether grown in sand or a heavier soil. Plants also set a high number of consistently shaped roots. Disease resistance is excellent and it is also tolerant of excessive soil moisture. EU 2011/1012 EU 2011/0209 Ipomoea batatas Evangeline PBR Ipomoea batatas Evangeline is a premium orange flesh sweet potato variety. It has deep orange flesh and a beta carotene content 40% greater than the standard variety Beauregard. The skin is slightly red at harvest but fades to rose in storage. The flavor is unique. The sugar profiles are very different. Sucrose is the dominent sugar in Evangeline which is perceived as a sweeter sugar than Maltose which is normally found in sweet potatoes. Ipomoea batatas Murasaki 29 PBR Ipomoea batatas Murasaki-29 is a specialty-type white flesh dark purple skin variety. The name means purple in Japanese and similar to in look and culinary properties associated with premium Asian varieties which are often steamed instead of baked. Murasaki-29 has a bright white flesh and a high dry matter content of 30-32%. It has a more potato like flavor and is less sweet. This variety has little or no beta carotene. Ipomoea batatas Orleans PBR Ipomoea batatas Orleans is in many ways a twin to Beauregard - and at the same time an improvement. The smooth light rose skin and deep orange flesh is indistinguishable from Beauregard so retail customers are still drawn as before. Even the sugar content is the same (11% total sugars in a baked product) as in Beauregard, but what makes Orleans so outstanding for the growers is the regularity of the shape of the roots. EU 2011/0210 EU 2014/2363 Oxalis tuberosa Crimson Oxalis tuberosa Crimson produces dark purple tubers in late autumn. The tasty tubers start to form when days are getting shorter and they can be dug up from November onwards. The plants need to be protected from early frosts. Hardy to 0 C. Oxalis tuberosa Crimson & Gold Oxalis tuberosa Crimson & Gold produces bicoloured tubers in late autumn. The tasty tubers start to form when days are getting shorter and they can be dug up from November onwards. The plants need to be protected from early frosts. Hardy to 0 C. Oxalis tuberosa Gold Oxalis tuberosa Gold produces yellow tubers in late autumn. The tasty tubers start to form when days are getting shorter and they can be dug up from November onwards. The plants need to be protected from early frosts. Hardy to 0 C. Smallanthus sonchifolius Smallanthus sonchifolius also known as Yacon produces sweet tasting tuberous roots with white or red skin which have a very low caloric value and are beneficial for the human health. The plant itself is also tropical in appearrance with very large bold foliage. It produces yellow flowers which come just before its roots are ready to harvest late in season similar to tiny sunflowers and grows up to 1,5m tall in our climate. Hardy to 0 C. 25
