February, 2018 A Publication of the Albuquerque Rose Society An Affiliate of the American Rose Society 2018 Vol 2 Happy Valentines Day! Dear friends and fellow Albuquerque rose aficionado's, Sadly, one of our own faithful and stalwart Rose Society members, Charlene Bacchus, is grievously ill and recovering from intensive surgery. Let us reach out to her with cards and s to encourage her during this difficult time of recovery. Visits are not welcomed because of our currently vicious flu season. All my other news is pretty upbeat. We had a program meeting and you can look forward to learning about pruning climbers, buying and selecting roses, how roses are judged, and many other subjects during our monthly meetings. In October we will offer an entertaining evening on Roses for Dummies. Many programs will be led by a panel of speakers and take on a more dynamic format. On the social side of things, we always can count on good times while volunteering with the pruning and care of our public rose garden. The rewards are many. Tentatively our First Blooms Party is set for May 12 th. Start thinking about your rosy finger foods and head coverings. A contest is again in the making. And one certain handsome young man has already volunteered to join our judges again! Suzy & Tom Andrego have offered to host a lovely summer dinner in their garden on June 16. Thank you, Suzy & Tom. We are also looking at an Ice Cream Social in the rose garden on August 18. Please mark your calendars. On top of all that, I am most excited to announce to you our two lovely new chair persons for the 2018 Rose Show (May 19/20): Beth Baker and Janet Dooley. This is their first time in this capacity and I promised them all the support we could possibly give them. Please, please don t let them down as they pour their energy into this most beautiful and outstanding event of our season. In joyful anticipation of a great rose year, Katrine

2018 SPRING ROSE SHOW MAY 19 and May 20, 2018 At the Albuquerque Garden Center Beth Baker and Janet Dooley just accepted the challenge to chair this year s Rose Show. Being neophytes at this task, they will appreciate assistance from seasoned volunteers as well as those who ve never experienced the wonder of this event. Chairs for all the committees are currently being confirmed. Please consider helping the chairs if they ask - it s Fun! The following information was published last year in the Blue Ribbon and is still relevant to this year: There will be Horticulture, Arrangement and Photography divisions open to everyone. For Horticulture start thinking about which roses in your garden produce the most and best quality blooms. Make a plan for doing some special fertilizing for those plants, think about how long it takes the plant to produce a bloom from pruning, make sure the soil stays moist, and start cleaning your tools for pruning. For Photography, start looking at the photographs you took over the summer Remember photographs have to be mounted and matted. Outside dimensions of the mat are to be 11 x 14. This might be a good time to get those choice photos mounted and matted. For Arrangements start thinking about roses you would like to display. Do they need some special attention in the coming months to look spectacular in May? The Rose theme has not yet been determined. Once known it will be on the Albuquerque Rose website and sent in an to members. Don t be intimidated to enter as an exhibitor. There are categories for novices and plenty of experienced exhibitors who are willing to help you display your roses the morning of May 19. For questions or suggestions contact either: Beth Baker at abqbeth@hotmail.com or Janet Dooley at janetmdooley@yahoo.com.
NEW MEMBER PROFILES Please welcome our new members! Terri Sankovitz comes to us from Wisconsin where she grew 60 roses, 740 perennial species and 5000 bulbs! She was only able to bring 85 of her favorite plants with her, but looks forward to adding to these as she creates her garden here. Her love of roses came from her mother and grandfather, both of whom were rosarians, her mother grew test roses for Jackson Perkins. Terri s favorite rose is Tropicana and it will always have a place in her garden. Terri is a clinical audiologist who recently received her doctorate in audiology. She works with an ENT group. Dianne Rossbach retired a year ago from a position in financial management. Since then she has been involving herself in many activities. She took the Master Naturalist program through the county. From that she has become a volunteer at the Rio Grande Nature Center, with Hawks Aloft teaching elementary school children, and at the Corlito Springs Historical site. This site has an historical orchard and a heritage rose garden. She will be working with pruning and maintaining the heritage roses there. Dianne plans to begin planting a small rose garden on her own property. Her first rose there will be one given to her in remembrance of her mother. WE WANT TO GET TO KNOW OUR MEMBERS JUST ANSWER THE FOLLOWING 3 QUESTIONS and SEND YOUR ANSWERS & PHOTO to the EDITOR, Suzy Andrego at Sandrego@qwest.net! QUESTIONS: 1. Where did your love of roses begin? 2. What is an interesting fact you have learned about roses? 3. What part of the Rose Society do you enjoy the most?
Water, Soil and Roses, By Jack Ortega, Consulting Rosarian We all know that water is a necessary ingredient for all living things. Having said that, we know that all rosarians water their roses. Some will employ a deep watering device, automatic watering systems, and others, like me use a hose with a bubbler. As we begin to delve into watering roses let s begin with the topic of soil and the interaction between the soil type with water and the soil s ability to hold water. Clay soil is denser, allowing it to hold more water. Loam type soil will hold more water than sandy, but less water than clay. At bottom of the spectrum is sandy soil which holds the least amount of water. Suffice it to say that rosarians prefer loam type soil. Agricultural studies offer information on water retention for the three types of soil being described. A clay soil retains about 35% of the water provided, loam registers at 15-25% and sandy comes in at 7%. When we apply water directly on to the soil only one half of the water provided is available to the rose. It s important to address the subject of water penetration as applied to soil type. Penetration simply defined is how deep the water goes down into the soil. Another way to look at soil penetration is the more porous the soil the faster and deeper the water will penetrate without runoff. When it comes to soil penetration, sandy leads the pack with twelve inches, followed by loam with 6-10 and clay with 4-6. Now we have a general understanding of soil types, their relationship to water with regard to water retention and soil penetration. Well, then how much should we water? As with many things in life there is no simple answer, but access to good guidance is next best thing. Remember, we re working outdoors and are exposed to the forces and good graces of nature. So we, along with our roses must factor in such things as temperature, wind, rain, heat, cold, full sun, partial shade and reflective heat. To that, add in the size of your bush such a climber, hybrid tea or miniature. For the most part we have excellent weather in New Mexico. However, over the last ten years we have experienced a notable change with regard to prolonged periods of hot weather, over ninety degrees coupled with lengthy periods with no rain. This type of situation presents the most difficult environment for our roses. Now is good time to turn our attention to some guidance on watering. Setting a standard, a typical full size rose has a root zone diameter of about thirty inches. The general guidance is that one inch of water (with no runoff) delivers about three gallons of water. And one gallon of water equal to 231 cubic inches of water by volume. As an example I water my roses (hybrid teas/floribundas) giving each two gallons of water three times a week. I describe my soil as loam with a slight tilt towards the sandy. I m an advocate of watering your roses on a set schedule. Roses are living things and they like receiving their nutrition on a regular basis.
WATER SOIL & ROSES, Continued: In our high desert climate, the use of mulch is vital. I recommend a mulch that is soft, porous and absorbent. Apply a layer that is two to three inches deep for best results. Mulching greatly reduces the evaporation of you water. Keeping your feeder roots cool and adding organic matter to roses are additional benefits. Mulch will also complement the overall appearance of your rose garden and give a finishing touch. How do we determine if our roses need water? Some folks like to use a moisture meter. I never have used one, but I suppose they work so it s an option to consider. The most obvious method is walking the garden and observe and in most case we see wilting. I like to use the finger method. During the heat of the summer stick your finger into the mulch and determine the moisture level at the base of your rose. If the soil is moist and cool then they have enough water. If the soil seems dry then you need to add water and/or adjust your watering amounts and schedule. Let me close by addressing what seems to be an ever increasing problem in our growing season. We are now experiencing consecutive days of ninety degree plus weather that stresses our roses. When this occurs we may have to add an additional watering day to our schedule. Don t make the mistake of over-watering and giving your rose wet feet this will only compound the problem. Maybe add more mulch and by all means water in the early morning. If you water by an automatic system, go out and purchase a hose and deep water once a week. This really does help and so does the extra exercise. Roses lose moisture through their leaves. Spraying an anti-transparent helps reduce the stress due to the prolong heat. I use Wilt-Pruf and find it quite effective in reducing stress, stem and leaf damage. The product is pine resin, making it organic, non-toxic, bio-degradable and safe to use. Consider it natural mulch for your rose canes, stems and leaves. MEMBERSHIP HELP NEEDED Membership needs help on pruning weekends to sit at a membership table to talk to potential members and hand out/ collect forms and to sell our booklets on Growing Roses in Albuquerque. This is a good opportunity for people to help who may not be able to help with pruning or who want to take a break for awhile and sit. You will get to meet and talk to people and tell them about this great organization. We will have tables on the weekends of March 10-11; 17-18; and There will be three shifts on each of these days: 9:30-12:30 and 12:30-3:30. The morning shift will help set up the table and supplies and the ending shift will help take it down. There will be a sign up sheet at the February meeting or you can or call Donna Baremore to sign up: djbaremore@gmail.com or Thank you for your help. Donna Baremore, Membership Chairman
