Description: This is an easy plant to care for. It s usually available in bulb or plant form. Common flower colors are bright red, pink and orange. Flowers can grow as much as 6 inches wide and usually begin to appear in March. Even though the flowers last a few weeks, the thick leaves that grow in clumps of glossy green makes for an attractive foliage plant. Light: Grows best in part sun to partial shade. Moisture: Water on a regular basis but don t overdo it. Allow plant to dry out between waterings.

Light: Full sun Moisture: Water on a regular basis & let dry between watering.

Fern (Stag Horn or Moosehead) Description: An air plant that gets most of its nutrients from the air, growing on but not feeding on tree trunks and branches. Needs bright indirect light.

Gold Mound Description: This shrub s brilliant golden color makes it one of the most valued colorful foliage plants. It beautifully complements other landscape colors (including green). Use it where you want to draw attention. Avoid planting as hedges or lining your foundation. Best used sparingly as a pop of color in the landscape. Light: Full to Part Sun to maintain its vivid color; Shade will turn it more green than gold. Landscape uses: Corner-of-the-house accent; flanking each side of the entry or a garden gate; accent in a mixed bed; space beside garage door. Northern Maidenhair Fern Description: This plant can make a graceful addition to shady gardens or bright indirect areas. Their light graygreen, feather-like foliage can add interest to any garden. Light: Part to Full Shade Moisture: Medium, well-drained soil.

Orchid Description: Attaching orchids to trees is very suited to the Fort Myers area. Choose a tree that admits adequate light. Oaks, Citrus, Bottlebrush(Callistemon Viminalis, C. Citrinus), Palms, Schefflera (Brassaia Actinophylla) and the less-common Calabash (Crescentia Alata) are prime candidates. Ficus often casts too much shade. Rough bark is an asset, though not essential for success. Does not feed on or harm the host tree. Philodendron Description: This is an ideal planting for homeowners who want little or no trimming. It forms a natural mound shape with a delightfully different texture. It spreads out & leaves become more deeply divided as it matures. It is excellent as

a single specimen or for hightlighting other colorful tropicals such as Crotons & Cordylines. Certain parts are known to be toxic if ingested and is considered deer-resistant. Light: Prefer Part Sun exposure. Landscape Suggestions: Foundation plant; surrounding palms & trees; lining a walkway or driveway; along edge of patio; container. Polka-Dot Plant Description: It is known for its colorful pink-spotted leaves. The plants, which grow quickly, are best kept more compact. Light: Prefers bright indirect exposure. Moisture: Water thoroughly & allow soild to dry slightly between watering. Water less frequently in Winter.

RECOMMENDED VARIETY: Emerald Goddess Peperomia Description: Sometimes called baby rubber plant, it has thick, waxy leaves & makes a beautiful low groundcover for shade. The Variegated variety is the showiest, with its creamy-white & green foliage. The solid green variety has dark emerald-green leaves almost too pretty to be real! This plant is used as a fairly slow-growing groundcover or as an accent in shaded areas. It doesn t send out runners like other groundcovers but instead grows in a spreading clump with stems that lean outward & stay low from the weight of its heavy leaves. Though it loves humidity, it doesn t like to be kept overly wet. In the landscape, it can provide a nice

repeat of variegation along with Arboricola, & Flax Lilly planted in a protected Shady area such as in front of garage walls on Suffield St. Caladium (Pictured: Large Leaf) They are easy to care for with adequate watering and are attention-grabbers when planted in groupings. Some varieties can take part or full sun. Height range is 1 to 2 feet. They are fast growers. Plant Guide: Add top soil or organic peat moss to the hole when planting. Plant 8 to 12 inches apart. Water on a regular basis as they need regular moisture. Suggested Landscape Use: around the base of a shade tree Impatiens (Pictured: Foreground flowers) They need moist, well-drained soil and part shade. The New Guinea variety thrive in Sun. They look great when planted en masse.

Petunias Description: A great Winter Annual in Southwest Florida and thrive in Full to Part Sun. Petunias are popular flowering Annuals that are easy to grow. They come in a wide range of colors and in different sizes of blooms. Grandifloras are petunias that produce large single or double flowers, while Multifloras have more single or double flowers. Petunias are often grown in hanging pots or containers. This flowering Annual needs lightly textured, well-drained soil and full sun. Excessive water and fertilizer can produce large plants, but fewer flowers. The flowers need regular deadheading.

Zinnia Description: Considered a Summer Annual. Zinnias grow to between 6 and 40 inches in height with single and double blossoms varying in diameter from less than an inch to 7 inches. The petals can be any of a wide range of colors or multicolored, except blue. Zinnias perform well massed in beds in Full Sun; used as an edging, in rock gardens, in pots and containers, or as background plants. They make excellent cut flowers. Scald the stems after picking and change vase water every couple of days. Zinnias attract butterflies. While some, known as Dwarf Zinnias, are only 6 inches tall, others can grow more than 3 feet, according to yardner.com. They re tolerant of most soils, other than wet ones, and need Full Sun exposure.. SOURCES: Greenscapes, University of Florida Florida Friendly Landscaping Guide, South Florida Plant Guide
