3 FUN FACTS Radishes were used as money in ancient Egypt. Once a radish gets too old, it will crack and split. Radish comes from the Latin word radix- which means root. Radishes are a healthy and nutritious root vegetable. I m worth my weight in gold!

5 HAVE YOU TRIED A FLORIDA RADISH? Florida radishes are harvested in the winter and spring months. They are available from November through May. Look for this logo to find Florida-grown radishes!

11 3-5 Math Plotting Coordinates Math in Action Proper spacing of crops ensures proper growth! Farmers use mathematical concepts to plant crops. Crops need proper spacing to ensure they have enough room to grow. Farmers often divide their garden or farm into a grid so they can determine how far apart to plant each crop. For example, radishes should be planted 1-2 inches apart in rows.

13 3-5 SOCIAL STUDIES Supply and Demand What is supply and demand? Supply supply is how much of something is available. When there is a surplus of a product available, its price will drop. As the price drops, people will buy more of that product. For example, if many radishes are harvested this year, the price of radishes will go down. Demand the desire and willingness to buy a product; it is how much of something people want. The higher the demand, the greater the price. The smaller the demand the lower the price. If a lot of people want to buy radishes, the demand for radishes will rise, increasing the cost.

15 3-5 SCIENCE WHY IS SOIL SO IMPORTANT? Soil contains the minerals and nutrients that allow your plants to grow strong and healthy. Plants absorb these nutrients in the soil through their roots. Radishes are a type of root vegetable. Soil is made up of 5 layers: Humus, Topsoil, Subsoil, Substratum, and Bedrock Radishes grow in the topsoil layer
16 3-5 SCIENCE Soil Layers Humus Layer topmost layer of soil. It is dark brown in color and made up of decayed plant and animal matter. It contains nutrients that plants need to be healthy. Topsoil this is approximately the top 2-8 inches of soil. It has a very high concentration of organic matter and is dark in color. You might find beetles, dead leaves and worms in this layer. Subsoil this layer is made up of a mixture of small particles such as sand, silt and clay. It is light in color. You could find some roots and even snakes in this layer. Substratum this layer contains medium sized rocks and is very light in color. Bedrock this layer is made up of solid hard rock. It is the deepest layer within the soil.

21 NUTRITION NUGGET Radishes are a good source of vitamin C and contain other important nutrients such as potassium and magnesium. One cup of sliced radishes only has 19 calories. Eating plenty of vegetables, like radishes, may help reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers.
22 TASTY TIPS Squeeze radishes to be sure they are not mushy before they are purchased. Store radishes in a perforated plastic bag in the crisper area of the refrigerator.
