2 FOREWORDS The recent Retail Week Interiors Awards Awards 2017 was a night to remember, entertainment and inspirational winners, making this the UK s preeminent store design and fit-out sector event. With entries from around the globe, this was a truly multinational affair that saw attendees travelling across the world to be part of a celebration of store design. Picking up a Retail Week Interiors awards, or even making it to the shortlist, is a remarkable achievement. It s something that all the retailers, agencies, designers involved in each category should be proud of. A simple question therefore: what have the last 12 months been about? Well, John Lewis, Debenhams, Topshop, Arket,Bunnings and Missguided, to name just a few familiar and some less familiar outfits, have all opened stores, among others. Meanwhile, Bershka, Shepherd Neame Brewery, and Magnum, the ice cream brand, have all entertained us with some pretty decent pop-ups and there have been more. I could go on and on, but instead I ll just say that while sales may not have been as some might wish, almost every retailer you could shake a stick at has been trying something new and working out what to do next. The big word, of course, has been experience. It s no longer enough to be a shop, you have to be an experience. The trouble is if you ask somebody to define what this actually means, you ll get as many views as there were shortlisted companies. Which doesn t really matter. What s important is that retail design and even the ability to design experience is something that is top of the agenda currently and with a tricky economy and online competition, there has rarely been a more pressing moment in which to get stores right.
