Waterside Shopping Centre, Lincoln Project: Shopping Centre Refurbishment Value: 9m Client: Capital & Region Sector: Retail Completed: 2014 Waldeck were hired by Capital and Regional as structural engineers in the refurbishment of the Waterside Shopping Centre in Lincoln. By Summer 2014, the shopping centre will have undergone transformation, with a new three-storey atrium being built which will feature all new escalators and an elevator. The existing atrium is set to be filled in and turned in to multiple flagship stores. There will also be change to the food court, which will move from the upper levels of the shopping centre to the ground floors. Waldeck Innovation In spite of the surgery complications that have arisen, such as restricted access due to the adjacent canal, Waldeck s work on the project has been lauded by main contractor Simons Group Director John Hallam, praising Waldeck s contributions to the project: Considering the complexities of the existing structure and its constraints, Waldeck worked effectively with the architect and ourselves providing innovative solutions to problems. Their can do attitude was evident throughout the course of the project and the team demonstrated excellent co-ordination and communication throughout.
Primark, Peterborough Project: New store in Queensgate shopping centre Value: 11m Client: Hammersons Sector: Retail / Commercial Completed: 2012 Hammersons Plc, one of Europe s leading real estate and development companies, appointed Waldeck to work on the 11million extension at Queensgate shopping centre in Peterborough to create room for retail giant Primark. The 60,000 ft² store, which is one of the largest units in the centre. Hammersons Senior Project Manager Neil Crawford said we are really excited to be bringing Primark to both the Queensgate Shopping Centre and Peterborough city centre. Waldeck have worked closely with Hammersons over several years with the re-development and restructuring of Queensgate to modify the retail space into a modern and contemporary environment. Several existing retail units were remodelled to form one large unit over two floors and Waldeck were appointed by Hammersons to undertake the civil and structural engineering work on the project from the feasibility through to the detailed design stage. Drawing on their inherent knowledge of the shopping centre, coupled with the first rate service they provide, Waldeck was the natural choice as engineers for this large and complex cut and carve project. Comment by Neil Crawford Senior Project Engineer for Hammersons. Waldeck Innovation The 60,000 sq ft store required the remodelling of several smaller stores. This then formed one unit over two floors; creating one of the largest stores in the Queensgate Shopping Centre.
John Lewis Partnership, New Street Station Project: New Street Station, Birmingham Value: Multimillion Client: John Lewis Partnership Sector: Retail & Rail Completed: Due September 2015 The refurbishment of New Street Station and The Pallasades Shopping Centre incorporates a signifificant retail element and provides for a 250,000 sq.ft John Lewis shop. Working closely with the landlords team and Network Rail, the team have developed the concept of the shop and now move into the fitout phase of the works encompassing many new selling concepts, which started on site January Project Innovation This scheme gives direct access from concourse level into the retail areas of the station and the John Lewis shop. This seamless intergration of two functions creates desireable mix of Retail and Transport.
T K Maxx, Birmingham Project: Refurbishment of Flagship Store Value: 2.5 million Client: T K Maxx Sector: Retail Completed: 2008 Our people were commissioned as consulting architects as part of this TK Maxx refurbishment project. The store was just one of 200 TK Maxx stores worked on by our people. The flagship store was completed in 2008 and forms part of the Bull Ring Shopping Centre, Birmingham, totalling an area of 45,000sqft retail space which is designed over two floors. Project Innovation The scheme involved the upgrade and refurbishment of the external envelope. Providing a new rainscreen cladding system with integrated branding, new wrapped facade shopfront and entrance from New Street. The internal fit out included the installation of a new escalator and customer lift access across the two floors.
Harvey Nichols, Leeds Project: Harvey Nichols, Leeds Value: 9.5 million Client: Harvey Nichols Sector: Retail Completed: 1997 Our people were commissioned by Harvey Nichols, following their successful involvement with numerous alteration and re-planning projects in their Knightsbridge store, to prepare initial concepts for developing some 1960 s listed buildings plus several adjoining Victorian shop units to provide two floors of high quality retail space in Leeds. The scheme grew, in conjunction with the Clients confidence, to 45,000sq.ft of sales floor spread over five floors devoted to fashion wear, accessories, home furnishings and food. A dramatic four storey high, planar glass frontage was created with internal atrium providing a modern design statement with enticing views into the store acting as a foil to the adjacent Victorian facades. Project Innovation Working closely with Leeds City Planners and English Heritage, it was essential to retain as much of the listed facades and interiors of the Victorian Grade 2 units as possible which, when complete, won the firm a Civic Architecture Award.
John Lewis, Milton Keynes Project: John Lewis, Milton Keynes Value: Mutlimillion Client: John Lewis Sector: Retail Completed: 2012 Our people were appointed by John Lewis for a complex refurbishment and extension of the existing listed department store that was originally designed in a Mies van de Rohe-inspired idiom. The works included an internal refurbishment together with a new high quality glazed facade and exciting new entrances to the mall. Project Innovation This project was successfully delivered using cutting-edge technology in the form of BIM (Building Information Modelling) which ensured that the scheme could be delivered on time, and with reduced risk. Using BIM software enables the creation and management of accurately detailed, highly constructible 3D models, regardless of material or structural complexity. Automatic referencing and clash-detection ensures an efficient, economic and effective high quality project.
Millstream Developments, Sleaford Project: Southgate regeneration Value: 6m Client: Millstream Developments Sector: Residential / Retail Completed: 2009 Millstream Square is a new development of shops and flats built on a former yard to the Victoria Inn, Sleaford. Waldeck were appointed to redevelop this town-centre Brownfield site. Due to the site conditions it was imperative that Waldeck found a suitable solution to the foundation issues relating to the build. Waldeck considered the use of deep trench footings verses piling and decided on the use of small mini piles which proved to be an economical route, rather than the traditional bored piled solution that had been recommended by others. The superstructure arrangement and specification were flexible in terms of loading; with the use of longer clear spans for upper floors which eliminated the need for internal walls to be load bearing meaning they can be moved or omitted all together. Waldeck also liaised between the church and two national retailers regarding the Party Walls, and were able to satisfy all concerns at an early stage. causing no disruption to the build. Waldeck Innovation Hybrid foundation solutions to suit challenging ground conditions. Some units were piled, others vibro improved and some built on raft foundations. This achieved maximum value for our client through working harder on tailored solutions for each element. One size doesn t fit all!
Peugeot, Cambridge Project: Car Showroom Value: 0.6m Client: Marshalls Peugeot / MARS Construction Sector: Commercial Waldeck was employed by Marshalls Peugeot to provide civil and structural design service to facilitate relocation of it s existing car sales showroom and facilities to a brown field site. The new, modern, bright, showroom comprises of a reception area, office, parts store and welfare facilities. The existing work shop was altered and extended to improve productivity. Externally Waldeck designed the highways work to improve access to the entrance and an area to be used as a new used car display area, customer parking and the associated facilities all completed three weeks ahead of schedule. Waldeck also liaised with Cambridgeshire County Council Highways to formulate Section 50 Agreement Geo-environmental engineering studies were also carried out because of the sites previous usage. Waldeck Innovation The external car display area was laid using sustainable urban drainage system incorporating free drainage block paving and a new access solution which were imperative to secure a planning consent.
