More and more of us are choosing to live environmentally friendly lifestyles, doing what we can to preserve and protect the environment for those we leave behind. Our Traditional Range Our Traditional collection of coffins and caskets is available in a choice of colours and materials to suit a range of religious beliefs, budgets and personal tastes. My sister cared a great deal about doing her bit for the environment. So it made sense for us to choose an environmentally friendly coffin and a woodland burial for her. It was the perfect way for us to say goodbye. Mr & Mrs T Protecting our Environment Many organisations these days claim to be socially responsible. For the Midcounties Co-operative, this goes much further. Forming one of the fundamental values of our business, acting in a socially responsible way is at the very heart of everything we do. As a Co-operative business, we are passionate about creating a better, fairer world through our environmental initiatives. Increased Recycling Levels to 91% (up from 21% In 2009) Reduced the total amount of waste we produce by 34% to 3,600 tonnes in 2016 (down from 5,500 tonnes in 2013) Our sustainability activity across all our business operations and funeral services has achieved considerable positive environmental impacts. With a strong focus on energy saving and recycling, we have: Diverted 3,000 tonnes of waste from landfill sites per year Reduced our energy usage by a further 4%, a total of over 15% since 2010 saving over 7000 Tonnes of CO2 Achieved re-accreditation for Business in the Community s Responsible Business awards for Sustainable Products and Services, in recognition of our year on year sustainability progress. 4 5

4 A better environment for everyone From giving over 11 million back to our local communities, donating over 70,000 food items to local food banks, to supporting renewable energy projects, fair trade and local suppliers, we are building a better environment for everyone. Carbon Trust Standard We achieved the nationally recognised Carbon Trust Standard in recognition for excellence in managing, reporting and reducing our carbon emissions. Queen s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development In 2015, the Midcounties Co-operative was awarded the Queen s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development. The Earth is all we have in common. The Queen s Award for Enterprise is an awards programme that recognises British businesses and other organisations that excel at international trade, innovation, or sustainable development. These are the highest official UK awards for British businesses and are awarded by the Queen and the Queen s representatives. A Sustainable Development Award is made to the Midcounties Co-operative for placing sustainability at the heart of its operations, whilst delivering tangible social and economic benefits. 6 7

5 Natural Earth Collection The materials used in our Natural Earth collection are all chosen for their sustainability, as well as low environmental impact during harvesting. All our Natural Earth products are 100% natural, biodegradable and suitable for cremation as well as traditional and natural burials (subject to local regulations). Pandanus Pandanus, or wild pineapple, is an eco-friendly alternative to seagrass. Seagrass is an aquatic plant which grows in shallow waters and provides shelter for many species of nursery fish. Harvesting seagrass results in the natural habitat being destroyed and fish being endangered. Unlike seagrass, pandanus is a prolific and rapidly growing weed which thrives anywhere on land, even in adverse conditions, meaning coastal water habitat is not disturbed. When coiled and woven, pandanus is almost indistinguishable from seagrass. Our Natural Earth range is made by a leading eco-friendly manufacturer in a number of different areas of the UK, as well as a diverse selection of handcrafting workshops around the world. Our partner has Fair Trade Status with the World Fair Trade Organisation, which means their products use raw materials from sustainably managed sources and buy locally wherever possible. Bamboo Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet, growing up to one metre per day. Pandas do not eat the species of bamboo that is used to make our products, so our production does not in any way effect this endangered species. The production techniques used in our Natural Earth coffins and caskets use technologies that reduce energy consumption, and use renewable energy techniques to minimise greenhouse gases. For example, energy consumption is reduced by fully using all the bamboo leaves and offcuts used in our bamboo products to run the kiln drying room. Pine Pine is native to much of the northern hemisphere. The pine we use is a rapidly growing, FSC certified variety from Poland and is an excellent material for use in our products. Pine grows up to 25 metres in height and is amongst the most commercially important of all tree species - valued for its timber and wood pulp throughout. Willow Willow is a deciduous shrub found primarily on moist soil in cold and temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. Almost all willows take root very readily from cuttings taken from the original crown, or where broken branches are left lying on the ground. Banana Banana cord is made using the dried woven leaves of the banana plant, which is an annual plant that dies back each year after it has produced its fruit. The plant stem is not formed of wood, but from tightly coiling the surplus leaves together. English Willow English willow has been grown in England on the Somerset levels for many centuries and has the ability to re-generate repeatedly from the same crown of the plant for up to 40 years. The colour variations are achieved naturally by drying, boiling or stripping the bark. Please note that certain Natural Earth coffins are only available subject to local crematoria regulations. At first I felt confused by the range of options available to me when I was arranging my Mother s funeral. Especially as I d never discussed with my Mother what type of funeral she wanted. But with the help of the brilliant staff at the Walsall funeral home, the decision was much easier than I expected and I chose a coffin printed with yellow roses.
