4 Lighting the living space The living space is the first area considered in most residential projects. Whilst the needs of individual spaces differ, there are common factors which impact on the lighting design of any living space. Bathroom spaces LDR LED 65 An 65 version of our LDR LED downlighter can be safely used in bathroom areas, combining excellent performance with the highest levels of safety. Living spaces Value Solutions Our LDR downlighter brings performance and economy to any living space. A variety of lumen packages allow it to be used in any size of living area. For areas where a more robust solution is required, Horizon provides an economical bulkhead solution. Compliance LDR 16 Horizon Evo There are two main guidelines that the building designer must consider when planning a new or refurbishment residential project, these are Part L2A of building regulations, and CIBSE LG9. Both give targets for overall energy consumption in either minimum efficacy or LENi, but LG9 also gives guidance on best practice in lighting, including light levels, use of controls, emergency lighting and consideration of the lit environment. Both narrow and wide beam angles can be combined to create different lighting effects and it is available with both cool and warm white light engines. If a wall light is preferred, Vallus T brings style and lighting quality to the living space. Portal is a feature packed bulkhead offering class leading efficiency in a stylish package. 5 Circulation areas Value Solutions Feature Solutions Reducing maintenance In circulation spaces maintenance is an ongoing cost borne by the building owner. We offer lighting solutions that are virtually maintenance free, with life expectancy of over 50,000 hours in many of our LED luminaires. Emergency testing and reporting is also an ongoing responsibility, and lighting controls can provide automated testing and reporting of emergency features, as well as monitoring battery replacement requirements. Compact R6 Horizon Evo The performance of Compact R6 downlighters maximises spacings and minimises energy usage to provide low maintenance, evenly lit circulation spaces. Bulkhead luminaires such as Horizon can provide an economical solution in both corridors and stairwells. Duo Line Convor Duo Line LED brings style and efficiency to corridor applications, and provides even illuminance to all room surfaces. Convor is ideal for stairwells and utility areas. Premium Solutions Improving safety In circulation spaces the responsibility for upkeep and energy bills is that of the building owner. This presents the lighting designer with a very different set of priorities to those used in determining the lighting in private living spaces. 7 In circulation spaces safety is of primary importance. Care should be given to provide good illumination of all room surfaces, avoiding cave like effects with shadowing to ceilings and upper walls. Good vertical illuminance will engender a feeling of safety amongst users, providing excellent facial recognition. As these areas must be lit 24/7, energy consumption can be high. This means that facial recognition is extremely important and cylindrical illuminance will aid interaction between users, creating more inviting spaces. In reception areas, attention should be paid to creating the desired first impression of a building. In all of these areas, the architect and lighting designer will have the opportunity to create exciting, vibrant spaces. A wide variety of lighting can be used to complement the building aesthetics, and these areas should provide a warm, welcoming environment and promote social interaction. 7 Outdoor areas Facades Lighting for safety The primary goal of exterior lighting is to provide safe transit for building users, whether pedestrian or vehicular. In pedestrian areas and car parks, high levels of uniformity are required and cylindrical illuminance should be considered, for improved facial recognition. On roadways careful selection of road classifications should be taken, as slower traffic flow may mean that lower levels of illuminance are required than in normal highway lighting. The lighting design must take into account these differing needs, and provide clear separation between pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
