4 PH NEW DESIGN AND TRADITIONAL SKILLS In ANNANSTANS, the contemporary concepts of designer Martin Bergström find new expression through the skilled hands of artisans in India, Romania and Thailand. Martin s second IKEA collaboration ranges from scarves and bags, to ceramic bowls, banana-fibre baskets and even beyond, to a pair of wooden mushrooms. Teams of skilled craftspeople developed and refined the product designs with Martin challenging each other to discover what would be distinctive, attractive and achievable. Handmade touches turn each piece into a one-off that is affordable to own. We wanted ANNANSTANS to feel urban and contemporary. I knew that Martin Bergström would stretch the artisans skills to design a truly creative collection. Karin Gustavsson, IKEA Creative Leader, ANNANSTANS The artisans work for one of four social enterprises that are long-term IKEA partners. Industree and Rangsutra in India, Doi Tung in Thailand and Mesteshukar Butiq in Romania all help to create social change for marginalised communities, as well as to support traditional handicrafts. 5 PH TOGETHER AND DIFFERENT ANNANSTANS explores diverse ideas, collaborations, skills, materials and locations. So the items was never intended to co-ordinate in a conventional way. As Martin Bergström, ANNANSTANS designer, says: It s more like a family than a collection. The items match and they don t match. Martin has applied his prints to three sizes of cushion cover, as well as two scarves, a kaftan and a tote-style, cotton bag. Two handmade boxes speak the same design language. ANNANSTANS also features three unique ceramics a bowl, a plate and a vase that are all handmade. There are two, handwoven baskets in banana fibre and, to round out this eclectic collection, a pair of decorative mushrooms that are hand-turned from wood. An artisanal approach, in partnership with social enterprises, gives IKEA customers the opportunity to own out-of-the-ordinary designer pieces that are both individual and meaningful. ANNANSTANS is handcrafted and limited edition which makes every item a bit different but also special. When the products are sold out, they re sold out. You can t just go out and buy a new one. I want people to think of their pieces like new friends in their home. Someone you want to take good care of for a long time. Artisans from Rangsutra social enterprise decorated the ANNANSTANS cushion covers with traditional Indian embroidery. Their handiwork adds a unique and personal contrast to Martin s striking prints. With a different print on each side of the covers, a new expression is as simple as flipping over a cushion. As well as an extra dimension of colour and texture, the handstitched Indian embroidery adds the individual touch of a skilled artisan to each cushion cover. These handmade details also celebrate the long-term partnership with Randsutra social enterprise, which nurtures traditional skills and the livelihoods of craftswomen in parts of rural India. A variety of specialists rose to the challenge set by Martin s ideas. They developed the unusual, rough -looking texture, paired with a special glaze and a carefully-controlled firing technique to achieve a distinctive effect that s subtly different from piece to piece. Doi Tung has been an IKEA partner since 2012 and the artisans agree that ANNANSTANS has allowed them to showcase a new dimension to their craftsmanship. ANNANSTANS invited Doi Tung to explore instead a handmade imperfection that would make each individual product unique. This means that the ANNANSTANS bowl, plate and vase all have their own individual identities, as well as sitting together as a family. With their highly distinctive forms, textures and colours, they can give an intriguing decorative effect almost anywhere in the home. These items are different to other products. It took a lot of effort to perfect the processes for glazing, colouring and firing the ceramics. These are the most challenging products that I ve made. This is part of Mesteshukar ButiQ (MBQ), a social enterprise and IKEA partner that promotes Roma craftsmanship and inclusivity through high-quality, handmade products. For ANNANSTANS items, Martin wanted to develop a hand-turned wood product together with the artisans at MBQ. An object that would feel individual, authentic, natural and, of course, pleasing to look at. Such careful handiwork takes extreme skill and focus. To find a material that suits the craftsperson, the designer as well as the strict IKEA sourcing policy was a time-consuming part of the mushroom production. The finishing touches rely on the handiwork and on the deep knowledge of the Roma artisans at MBQ. This IKEA collaboration brings their talents to a wider audience. MBQ is a well-established social enterprise that offers a more secure livelihood to Roma artisans through a network of communities and workshops across Romania. This renewable resource, a by-product of banana farming, is one of the strongest natural fibres. At Industree in India, handwoven natural fibres are a speciality. But rather than their usual neatness and precision, Martin wanted an organic and haphazard look that would showcase the beautiful, natural material. Mani, a master artisan, coined a term for the novel technique that she developed to achieve the desired imperfect yet durable effect. I called it what it is crazy weave! With ANNANSTANS, Martin welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with skilled artisans and to promote the work of social enterprises around the world. The big question for me around the collaboration has been How can we bring our differences together, making them work in a collection? So, we ve been pushing both our boundaries, mixing my ideas with their traditions and handicraft until we got just the right feeling to each and every item. INDUSTREE PRODUCER TRANSFORM Industree Producer Transform operates a number of artisan-owned self-help groups, mainly in the southern Indian states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In these rural locations, full-time employment is scarce. Industree PT production centres give artisans the opportunity to generate a regular income, close to home. These artisans eight out of 10 of whom are women specialise in handwoven natural fibres, such as the banana bark in ANNANSTANS. They all decide on financial and business matters through a democratic process. As well as IKEA collaborations, Industree PT also creates and markets its own distinctive products across India. RANGSUTRA Rangsutra is a handicraft company owned by a community of over two thousand artisans from across rural India, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Kashmir and Manipur. For over 10 years, it has empowered women (70% of the artisans are female), secured sustainable livelihoods and nurtured the local handicraft traditions. Artisans at Rangsutra specialise in traditional Indian embroidery, textile and grass weaving. Alongside the IKEA collaborations, Rangsutra markets own-brand products direct to customers through its online shop. ANNANSTANS / IKEA PRESS KIT / 8 MARCH 2019 / 23

PH158303 DOI TUNG DEVELOPMENT PROJECT Formed in 1988, Doi Tung Development Project is one of the oldest and most established social enterprises.

24 PH DOI TUNG DEVELOPMENT PROJECT Formed in 1988, Doi Tung Development Project is one of the oldest and most established social enterprises. Its founding mission was to help the local hill tribe people in northern Thailand to manage the forest and to generate a sustainable livelihood. IKEA partnerships with Doi Tung began in 2012, working with almost all of their nearly 300 artisans on hand formed pottery, hand woven textiles and handmade mulberry paper products for limited IKEA collections. As well as their handicrafts business, Doi Tung also grows crops such as coffee and macadamia nuts. The nutshells even become biofuel. In all, the Doi Tung region is home to around 11,000 people across 29 villages, over an area of 150 square km. ANNANSTANS / IKEA PRESS KIT / 8 MARCH 2019 / 24

25 PH MBQ (MESTESHUKAR BUTIQ) MBQ is a Bucharest-based social enterprise that works towards integration, education and sustainable livelihoods for Roma artisans throughout Romania. The business combines centuries-old techniques with modern design, to create high-quality home-décor and fashion products. Every object that MBQ sells provides income for Roma artisans. ANNANSTANS is the second IKEA product collaboration to which MBQ has contributed, with a further two in development for As a result of this partnership, MBQ can provide regular work for more artisans and develop its production for a broader market. PH158234 IKEA + SOCIAL ENTREPENEURS ANNANSTANS is the latest IKEA limited edition news designed and handmade in partnership with social enterprise businesses.

Some of these social enterprise partners contribute to international product ranges, such as ANNANSTANS. Others may develop products or provide services for just a few IKEA stores.

In the five years since the first small-scale collaboration, more than 15,000 people have found stable employment through a social enterprise partner.

26 PH IKEA + SOCIAL ENTREPENEURS ANNANSTANS is the latest IKEA limited edition news designed and handmade in partnership with social enterprise businesses. As of October 2018, a total of 26 such IKEA partners in 15 countries provide a secure livelihood for marginalised women and other groups. Some of these social enterprise partners contribute to international product ranges, such as ANNANSTANS. Others may develop products or provide services for just a few IKEA stores. An increasing amount of IKEA coffee now comes from a social enterprise partner in Uganda.
