Because, when you take pride and pleasure in your work and truly enjoy what you do, every day is like being on holiday. And that s who we are at Holliday Architects. CELEBRATING OUR NEW ADDRESS PRESIDENT S MESSAGE VERSATILITY THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN CHALLENGING TIMES For many people in the South Jersey marketplace, Holliday Architects may be known primarily as a designer of upscale residential homes. Certainly that is our forte and an area of professional practice that we much enjoy. But these days it is important to be versatile in responding to market needs. Our talented staff demonstrates well our ability to create innovative designs for residential projects of all types and sizes, commercial projects ranging from restaurant renovations to hotel structures, solutions to expand existing manufacturing facilities, and historic preservation, rehabilitation, restoration and reconstruction. In this first issue of On Holliday we re proud to give you an overview of some of the projects currently on our drawing boards or recently completed. There is another distinction for which we are recognized...our ability to listen closely and to involve our clients totally in every project, large or small. Our staff works as a team and our clients become part of that team as well. We welcome the opportunity to put our team to work for you! Jim Holliday TO LEARN MORE PLEASE VISIT US AT In early 2007, with our expanding staff, it quickly became obvious that we had outgrown our offices on Skeet Road. In late October, 2007 we were happy to take occupancy of our new suite of offices in Jackson Commons at 30 Jackson Road, Medford, NJ. In addition to plenty of comfortable office space for everyone, we now have a beautiful conference room, spacious storage and work rooms, and a welcoming reception area to greet clients and other visitors. MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF HOTEL DESIGN It has been our pleasure to work with representatives of the Marriott Hotel group in creating unique designs that meet special needs.

With metal framing too expensive for the project s budget, an all wood framed design that would meet local codes and maintain the Marriott prototype was created.

3 MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF HOTEL DESIGN It has been our pleasure to work with representatives of the Marriott Hotel group in creating unique designs that meet special needs. The Marriott Fairfield Inn and Suites, a four-story hotel facility designed for a New Jersey location, posed a certain challenge. With metal framing too expensive for the project s budget, an all wood framed design that would meet local codes and maintain the Marriott prototype was created. A second Marriott facility, the Marriott Springhill Suites in Harrisburg, PA is also designed with all wood framing, and presented the additional challenge of tailoring the hotel s prototype exterior design to better blend in with the existing office park environment in which it is located. We re proud of the results. Four more hotel plans for Marriott are now on our drawing boards. TRENDS IN RESIDENTIAL DESIGN By John DiNisio, Residenital Division Director Bigger isn t always better often it s the small elements that produce the most memorable results. Today, more and more, the trend in residential design is more detail. Our residential clients are expressing more interest in the intimate feeling evoked by lower line roofs, the Old World flavor of French Country styling, less use of stucco and more use of varied textures in exterior design. Inside the home it s all about how families live today. The once obligatory formal living room is giving way to a more useful space such as a cozy den, efficiently designed home office, or first floor playroom for the whole family. Volume ceilings are being replaced by ten-foot ceiling heights that still allow for dramatic window design. Kitchens are larger than ever, validating their position as the family-center of the home. Bonus rooms call them morning rooms, sunrooms or estate rooms, take their place as a second gathering spot that is more casual and more comfortable than the formal parlor. At Holliday Architects we listen closely to our clients, explore carefully the way they want to live, and get them intimately involved in planning those elements that add personality and detail to their homes.

DESIGNING A DREAM Working with Medford home builder Bob Meyer, we are in the process of designing the home of their dreams for Michael and Donna Woloshin.

Every aspect of the home is special to us, Donna says, noting that she presented John DiNisio with a very specific wish list three pages long.

The house is charming and warm with a lovely European flair. John listened carefully to us and has been able to interpret exactly what we had in mind.

We re pleased to be working on this project with builder Fred Kozlowski who says, of his experience with John DiNisio... John is very creative and very detailed. The buyers fall in love with his warm and understanding personality. When he comes back with his first design presentation it s just what they want! Every aspect of the home is special to us, Donna says, noting that she presented John DiNisio with a very specific wish list three pages long. The home has to have character, but also be functional for our family and, of course, we had a budget we had to work within. We were delighted with the presentation John made. The house is charming and warm with a lovely European flair. John listened carefully to us and has been able to interpret exactly what we had in mind. He truly cares about his work and the people he designs for. We are convinced that John and the staff at Holliday Architects are the right team to make our dream home a reality. BRINGING AN EVOLVING STRUCTURE UP-TO-DATE By Craig Masterson In 1908, the plant now owned by the German-based Ensinger-Hyde Manufacturing Company opened in Grenloch, NJ for the manufacture of cast and extruded nylon component products. Over the ensuing years, the plant evolved through five separate additions to the 60K square foot plant that now stands. The challenge presented to us was to upgrade the office and production facilities of the plant and somehow, make these five different evolutions consistent with today s commercial styling and more pleasing to the eye of the residential community that surrounds the plant. This is a fast-track project that requires not only the design elements but also the coordination of a design/build team. The oldest portion of the building will remain, while some 10K square feet will be razed to make way for a new 24K square foot addition. A variety of materials and textures will be integrated in refacing the exterior of the finished structure, literally for a design facelift to give the entire structure a more contemporary look. Construction is scheduled to begin in October, 2008.

For a closer look at this spectacular community, visit Travarelli s website at TAKING HONORS AT THE MAME & SAM AWARDS We were proud to receive five awards in the 2007 MAME (Major Achievements in Marketing Excellence) awards program presented by the Builders League of South Jersey last November. In addition to awards for our corporate brochure, print advertising and website, we received awards for the Best Residential Renovation of a Custom Home for a private residence in Stone Harbor and Best Commercial Renovation for Ott s Tavern in Medford, NJ. In April, we were awarded a SAM (Sales and Marketing) Award from the New Jersey Builders Association for our corporate brochure. THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING Bruce Paparone doesn t believe in giving too much credit to the naysayers in today s housing markets. Certainly there have been market forces that have impacted the housing industry both locally and nationwide, he says, but for many potential home buyers the opportunity to own a new home has seldom been better. Interest rates, inventories, stable but affordable financing programs and some of the most appealing pricing the market has seen in a long time all point to the positive possibilities buyers can find today. The objective should be to explore what is out there for you. Bruce reports an increase in traffic and sales at his communities. We have enjoyed a long-time relationship with Paparone Corporation, originally founded by Bruce s father Sam and now trading under the name Bruce Paparone, Inc. One of the perennial favorites among the homes we have designed for Bruce is the Stoneleigh model, a stately home that is all about angles...offering dramatic vistas throughout the house, but with an intimate feel. For a closer look at this home and Paparone s fine communities, visit A UNIQUE DESIGN CHALLENGE FOR A BAY FRONT PROPERTY Working with custom home builder Gary Gardner, we faced an unusual challenge in designing a 7,000 foot home with 200 feet of bay frontage on a site where building space was restricted by wetlands regulations. The solution was a magnificent, angled home with great southwest exposure. Gary, a long-time client of Holliday Architects and John DiNisio, says of John s skills... he is an excellent designer; he hits all points and keeps in mind details such as lumber sizes to avoid waste. He knows how a house goes together.
