4 GOLD AWARD WINNER INTERNATIONAL BUILDERS SHOW IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE TURNING THE HOME DESIGN UPSIDE DOWN by Mark Foster A spectacular custom home in Houston s Woodland Heights neighborhood earned top honors for Allegro Builders in The Nationals, a prestigious competition at the recent International Builders Show. The distinguished award casts the global spotlight on Allegro Builders three-story custom home in the historic, 100-year-old Woodland Heights community just outside downtown Houston.

5 Competition judges were captivated by the home s heavenly zen interior and its innovative outdoor living spaces, including a rooftop terrace with a knockout skyline view. For home building and architectural design, The Nationals are as prestigious as the Academy Awards for the movie industry, says Lambert Arceneaux, president of Allegro Builders, an 13-year-old Houston construction company. We take great pride in collaborating with elite architects and home owners to create very special homes. The award winning, one-of-a kind home by Allegro was designed to create a livable modern home that blends with its historic neighborhood. Situated on a smaller lot with irregular dimensions, the design of the home required innovative thinking to capture the site s dramatic downtown views. The conventional thinking of public space down and private space up was turned upside down, Arceneaux said. The master suite, library, and secondary bedroom are on the second floor. The family room, kitchen, dining are on the third, with outdoor living on the roof.

6 A MOMENT WITH LAMBERT ARCENEAUX of Allegro Builders Allegro Builders has garnered recognition nationally and in its hometown of Houston, Texas. So we caught up with Allegro s founder and president Lambert Arceneaux to find out more about the inner workings of the upward trending company. Metropolitan Builder: Allegro Builders is known for building some spectacular million-dollar homes in the Heights. How did you earn that reputation? Lambert Arceneaux: Thank you. But let me tweak that perception a bit. We also build moderately priced homes, as well as upscale custom homes. And it s true that Allegro has done a lot of work in the Heights, but we build homes all over Houston. Actually, a lot of our homes are for the mid-level market. Metropolitan Builder: The mid-level market? Lambert Arceneaux: Yes, Allegro builds some homes in the mid $300s. We import some design features and luxury-level materials into our mid-market homes, wherever it seems reasonable. Metropolitan Builder: So Allegro has migrated down the price bands, taking your mastery of million-dollar homes to more affordable houses? Lambert Arceneaux: Yes, we re excited about innovating to reach other markets. Later this year, we will unveil a series of zero energy affordable homes targeting first-time home buyers, empty nesters and veterans. The homes are so energy efficient and well-built that they produce more energy than they use. So, when you figure in energy costs, these houses will be very affordable places to live. Metropolitan Builder: Metropolitan Builder: Tell us about how Allegro Builders got started. Lambert Arceneaux: Allegro was founded in 1997 right here in Houston. Before starting the company, we had been specializing in remodeling and building foundations for commercial buildings and we wanted to get involved in bringing fine craftsmanship to the market with new houses with great design.
