9 Foreword /"^* ^HE gathering of this remarkable collection of A '^ models has taken a quarter of a Century. For years, Architects and Decorators from all over the United States, who have had the opportunity of viewing them, have urged us to put them in such shape that the Public could have the use of them. The catalog itself is the result of three years of incessant labor, and we now feel a pardonable pride in its publication. It must not be understood, however, that our work ends with the selling of ornaments selected from this catalog. It shall be our pleasure to place our designing staff at your service, to be at all times helpful to the architect, to advise and assist with our knowledge and experience, gained from twenty-five years of daily contact with the foremost men in the architectural profession. The service we here offer, will, we confidently believe, be equally as valuable as the book. 10 Terms. Conditions and Notes The prices given are subject to Discount, depending upon quantities, and are F. O. B., N. Y. The prices are for reasonable (Room) quantities, not for single ornaments, except where single ornaments only can be used. For large quantities inquiries are invited. All prices herein are based upon the various objects being made in plaster in the customary ivay. For exterior add 20% for Cement Stucco apply for prices. Our terms are 30 days net or 2% discount Jor cash in ten days from date of bill. Firms unknown to us will please send New York, references or remit with order. All remittances should be made with draft on New York ; cost of collection should be added to checks. 12 Mouldings PLATE I JACOBSON & Co. ^ ^* " The art of producing Sgraffito has been highly developed It is made in any two colors. Colors guaranteed fast. Sgraffito or Scratched Ornament HE term is derived from the Italian '^ graffiato or sgraffiiato, used for ^ ^^"^ scratched work, hatching black and white work, or any other two colors. This system of plastic decoration was rediscovered at the time of the exhumations of the Baths of Titus by Pietro Luggo, and revived by him and Andrea Feltrini, who covered the fronts of buildings with an intonaco of black plaster, which, while in a fresh condition, was covered with a white stucco, to which cartoons were transferred, and then the outline was hatched over with a graving-iron so as to expose the coating of black underneath. The first facade done in this manner was that of the Palazzo Gondi, in Florence, by Di Cosimo. The next, a very elaborate one, in Lung 'Arno, near the bridge of the Trinita, etc., by us. It is made in cement slabs, in sizes required, of any design and shape. The Sgraffito slabs may be set in the same manner as stone or marble slabs and by the same artisans.
