This is not only economically beneficial, but allows owners to uncover hidden gems within their historic home. 4 Greg Steinberg and Alexandra Becket, a couple that operates the home renovation service ModOp Design, extended their talents to renovate their own home, a 1926 Spanish Bungalow. The beamed ceiling in the living room, the built in book cases and the front door were all stripped of the faux finish they had and were carefully stained. They restored all the original wood work and ripped up the deteriorating carpet to expose the oak wood floors. What began as a rundown shack has now been transformed into a beautiful home. Four and a half years ago, Emily Love and her husband purchased a foreclosed log home in Baltimore, Md., and have recently finished renovating the exterior. Love s blog, Cabin Fervor, shows how they transformed the 19th-century home, which when purchased was covered in crumbling vinyl siding. Beneath the faux layers, the house was a beautiful rustic cabin made of hand-hewn logs. Architecture firm SEPTEMBRE, based in Paris France, converted this old farmhouse into a summer home. The project concept was to keep as much as possible of the old structure while adapting it to a new use. Minimal design of the interior walls and use of rugged materials allows for a gentle preservation of the initial appearance of the building and its annex. In addition to restoring the original farmhouse as much as possible, designers used local carpenters and metal workers for all windows, hand rails, wardrobes, and doors. They design with sustainability in mind, salvaging and reusing as much of the original structure as possible, from woodwork to windows. Considering themselves historical detectives, they specialize in uncovering a house s nobler origins and recreating the original details of the home, while at the same time not incorporating upgrades, modernization, or change of use. 10 EXTERIOR ADDITION Many historic structures can be reworked into a livable, unique space that maintains its value over time, while adding character and modern amenities. Marià Castelló Martínez has designed a contemporary remodel and extension of a traditional stone-wall house located on the Spanish island of Formentera. This remodel is located on a plot of 19,060 square meters, with all pre-existing structures renovated and enhanced. The volume of the original house includes a simple pitched roof gable and original dry stone walls, while hosting the common areas (living, dining, kitchen and terraces). The contemporary expansion, which holds the bedrooms and service rooms, has been formalized with a limited palette of materials, contrasting elegantly with exposed original stone walls. Therefore updating historic structures for modern use allows for something unique: a journey between tradition and modernity. Agence Jouin Manku, a firm based in France, has transformed the famous Saint-Lazare priory into a modern hotel and restaurant. The designers were tasked with refurbishing the protected interior of the 17th century priory, while integrating modern aesthetics and technologies without altering the original structure of the building. Custom-designed freestanding furniture was introduced to divide spaces and alter the functionality of the chapel, while the hotel rooms are designed with a neutral palette to create tranquil resting places that reference the monastic history of the buildings.
