Salt Creek Ln., Ste. 201 Arlington Heights, IL Backyards have long been a place for barbecuing with friends, getting dirty in the garden, playing roughand-tumble games and relaxing around the fire pit on a cool summer night. A recent trend in extending entertaining areas from inside the home out has transformed outdoor spaces like these into rooms of their own, making comfort and style more important than ever before. Now, furniture, accessories, appliances and lighting take on a whole new persona. Not requiring a huge monetary investment or any heavy construction, perhaps the easiest components of outdoor living to integrate are furniture and accessories. According to the American Home Furnishings Alliance s 2015 Outdoor Furniture Trend Report, more than 80 percent of American households planned a purchase in this sub-segment last year, up from 62 percent in Some trending concepts include: low-maintenance materials, like plank porcelain, lightweight aluminum and wood grain in fiberglass; crescent- or U-shaped sofas and loveseats; tables with expansion capabilities; fire pits; and vibrant colors. Then there s the kitchen, considered to be the heart of the home (and perhaps now the backyard?). In the National Kitchen & Bath Assn. (NKBA) 2016 Design Trends Survey, 45 percent of NKBA member respondents designed or built outdoor kitchens in 2015, and roughly the same amount expect to do more in Luxury grills, pizza ovens, openair structures and functional zones are the most-requested elements. Not surprisingly, lighting is also on top of the must-have list for an outdoor living space. In the 2016 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends Survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects, respondents were asked to rate the expected popularity of a variety of residential outdoor design elements in Lighting was the second most popular, with 67 percent saying it will be requested by consumers in the coming year. Are we prepared for this demand? New intros in landscape lighting, as well as outdoor lanterns and posts, will surely provide great options. And at January s Lightovation in Dallas, a truly new category outdoor decorative bolstered exterior lighting offerings even more. In our story Outdoor Living on page 46, you ll see big manufacturers like Hinkley and Kichler have introduced outdoor pendants and chandeliers, some as extensions of popular indoor collections, to bring big style to these areas and create a mood as inviting as a cozy living room. This, to me, really signifies that outdoor entertaining spaces have reached a pivotal level. Nothing completes a room like a good lighting fixture it takes thought and handiwork, and proclaims a sense of permanence. 5 NEW PRODUCTS INNOVATIVE INTERIORS Zanzibar Collection from Currey & Co. has been expanded to include Zanzibar pendant, which joins a wall sconce and two chandeliers. Made out of wrought iron, the pendant is finished in a Light Bronze Gold and Raj Mirror. MINIMALIST MOOD Structo floor lamp from Curio Design features advanced light guide technology, with 90 percent of the light directed downward and the remaining 10 percent pointed upward. Available in six colors, it also offers Bluetooth connectivity. WORLD TRAVELER Passport from Kichler is a Danish-inspired, Mid-Century Modern collection with a rounded wood frame.
