3 TYPES OF CULTURAL SPACES Purpose-built spaces are designed and constructed from the outset to perform a specific function or number of functions. Multipurpose spaces are designed and constructed for broad use by a number of different art forms and/or other uses. Adaptive reuse spaces are those designed and built for one purpose, but readapted for a new or different arts and culture use. Live/work spaces are generally defined as facilities that are inhabited by artists during work and non-work hours. Exhibition spaces are those facilities where access is permitted to an audience in order for them to experience the art or artifacts.

The goal is to use vocational training to renovate long time vacant homes, and then give away these homes to writers. For keeps. Forever. 32 DEVELOP A CULTURAL/CREATIVE LENS FOR ALL INITIATIVES A cultural perspective that broadens the scope of development and planning could address: the level of community participation in the development of an initiative a project s authenticity in relation to the values of those who will be impacted impacts on opportunities for and access to cultural expression and participation opportunities to enrich the quality of daily life

33 CREATIVE LIBRARIES: o Understand how knowledge/information move between communities and within neighbourhoods. o Build relationships with community members and understand how you fit into their wider cultural life. o Gain a better understanding of how residents engage with the space at a community level; explore barriers to library access; and identify ways to strengthen local engagement.

Recognize and plan for cultural infrastructure as an integral component of infrastructure for 21st-century cities and communities. Rethink our approach to cultural infrastructure, with greater attention to issues of lifecycle, the interaction of social and built infrastructure, and long-term sustainability Creative City Network of Canada

36 CREATIVE LIBRARIES Librarians have to think about our spaces differently. Before we managed book collections, and today we re doing much more management of community spaces.
