INTRODUCTION Photographs of county courthouses for the state of Missouri, taken in the mid-twentieth century by Richard L. Lee. DONOR INFORMATION The photographs were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Richard L. Lee on August 19, 1988 (Accession No ). RIGHTS This collection has no known copyright restrictions. BIOGRAPHICALSKETCH Dr. Richard Leslie Lee was born on November 18, 1925 in Purdin, MO. A WWII veteran, he completed a BS in Agriculture and a MS in Journalism at the University of Missouri following his return from the war. He continued his studies at the University of Iowa, completing a PhD in Mass Communications. Dr. Lee spent his career as an Agricultural Editor. He worked for the University of Missouri College of Agriculture as an assistant editor from 1954 until 1959, when he became editor for University of Missouri Extension. Although they are undated, Lee s county courthouse photographs likely were taken during his work and travels as assistant editor for the College of Agriculture. In addition to writing and publishing information about agriculture in Missouri, Lee s work included advising and mentorship for many agricultural journalism students. From , he served as president of the Agricultural College Editors (ACE). Lee retired in 1988 but continued part time work for the Commercial Agriculture program through He died in Columbia on March 3, SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collections consists of 209 images of Missouri s county courthouse exteriors. Some images are represented by both print and negative copies. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by county name. Use copies are available through the Society s digital collections. 1
