Identifying historic resources is the first step to protecting the unique cultural heritage that defines your community. We see those historic resources with a fresh eye. Often the interest and enthusiasm of an impartial observer helps a community rediscover places they have known but might not have seen as either significant or of interest to those living outside of the community. 5 understand Why spend the time getting to know these old places? The trustees of a site must know the events, people, structures and objects associated with that site. They must be able to convey its history and meaning to visitors. Research provides the information that makes good interpretation possible. It is difficult enough to interpret what you know; it is impossible to interpret what you don t know. The information in diaries, deeds, tax records, newspapers, and other documents have the power to bring historic places to life. Information makes it possible to interpret historic sites in a way that makes them meaningful. Helping the public - the community, elected officials and visitors - understand your historic site creates a powerful force for preservation. Mudpuppy & Waterdog has conducted research on such diverse topics as Civil War battlefields, entertainers, communities, World War II ammunition plants and Tennessee s United States Colored Troops during the Civil War.

9 Qualifications Joseph Brent has worked in the field of public history since He received a BA in history from the University of Alabama in 1979 and an MA in history from the University of South Alabama in He began his career in public history as an archivist with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History working on the Mississippi Newspaper Project. In 1990 he moved to the Kentucky Heritage Council, the state historic preservation office. While at the KHC, he created and managed the Civil War Sites Preservation Program, the first program of its kind in the nation. The challenge of assisting individuals and non-profits protect Kentucky s Civil War resources gave him an understanding of the power of community consensus building, experience in preservation planning, and the importance of effective interpretation and authenticity as tools for preservation and economic development. He understands the challenges faced by those laboring to preserve and interpret historic sites. His desire to be more directly involved in the preservation process led Mr. Brent to form the consulting firm Mudpuppy & Waterdog, Inc. in 1999.

10 Qualifications Maria Campbell Brent received her BS in 1975 from Central Michigan University where she studied cultural anthropology and archaeology. While at CMU she worked at the Center for Cultural and Natural History where she gained valuable experience in interpretation, exhibit design and preparation and collections management. Between 1971 and 1998 she worked on more than forty archaeological projects in sixteen different states. She frequently acted as staff illustrator, rendering artifact illustrations, maps and figures. In 1987 Ms. Brent served as illustrator for the SUNY Albany Southern Belize Archaeological Project, working on location. In 1990 Ms. Brent joined Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc. in Lexington, Kentucky as lab manager. In 1999 she joined her husband Joseph Brent in forming Mudpuppy & Waterdog, Inc. Her chief interests are research and developing interpretation that helps visitors achieve a personal understanding and connection to historic sites.
