3 Purpose of the Project: Bristoe Station was one of those locations which the gods of war seem to favor. Like the nearby battles at Manassas (Bull Run) in 1861 and 1862, Bristoe figured prominently in the grand maneuvers of General Robert E. Lee s Army of Northern Virginia in both 1862 and Blue and Gray Magazine, Vol. XXXVI, #2 Recognize the state and national importance of the Civil War Battles of Bristoe Station and Kettle Run Develop a study through a community based planning eft to guide the preservation and protection of the battlefield landscape Discover, through historical research and analysis, significant tangible evidence of the events and lives of the people who occupied and shaped the battlefield landscape Maintain and protect the rural and historic character of the landscape so that battlefield events can be interpreted now and in the future
4 Preservation Study Process: (Input Stakeholder Meeting #1) Establish Study Area and Core Battlefield Area boundaries Develop a vision statement and goals the study and solicit public participation and input ( 3 stakeholder and public meetings) Collect Inmation: historical/existing conditions (in process) Use Cultural Landscape Approach including Military Terrain Analysis (KOCOA), field based condition assessments, and viewshed analysis to identify defining features (in process) Analyze and compare historical and existing landscape condition, evolution of the landscape over time (in process) Develop priority parcels (in process) Develop a comprehensive list of existing and additional planning tool options priority parcels (in process) Provide management and action guidelines implementation of study recommendations (to be developed)

7 Goals the Bristoe Station and Kettle Run Battlefield Preservation Study (See station 1) Develop preservation recommendations that overlap, support and enhance recommendations preservation of the Rural Area as identified in the Prince William County Rural Preservation Study Report, Develop battlefield preservation guidelines that support and enhance the current policies and action strategies cultural resources, open space/recreation, environmentally sensitive areas, and long range land use included in the PWC Comprehensive Plan. Engage local and state-wide government, preservations organizations, landowners and the local community in participating in preserving the battlefields Support and give additional guidance enhanced interpretation based on identification of the geographic locations of battlefield features in the landscape and the troop movements, actions, and tactics during the two battles.
