1 PRESS INFORMATION OCTOBER 2011 RESULTS OF THE VMZINC ARCHIZINC CAMPUS COMPETITION: A MARK OF RECOGNITION FOR UP AND COMING ARCHITECTS! The ARCHIZINC CAMPUS competition was launched in September 2010 and is aimed at students in schools of architecture working with VMZINC. The moment has come to unveil the results of the competition. This first edition had participants from different European countries and its theme was: Building with Water. The challenge consisted in demonstrating the ecoefficiency of zinc by regenerating an existing Parisian site of 8000 m². This waste land situated in an enclave on the outskirts of the city is part of the major urban renewal project for North-East Paris. Candidates were instructed to highlight the reflexive nature of water with an original conceptual infrastructure * respecting the environment. To help them design their projects, VMZINC provided students with an intelligent environmental performance measurement chart. In all, thirty-eight projects submitted by 56 students were examined in detail by a Jury of experts presided by the architect Françoise-Hélène JOURDA **. Five schools of architecture participated in the ARCHIZINC CAMPUS COMPETITION: École Spéciale d Architecture (ESA), Paris France École d Architecture de Paris La Villette (EAPLV) - France Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura Bioclimática de Madrid (ETSAM) Spain Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura del Vallés (ETSAV), Barcelona - Spain Provinciaal Hogeschool Limburg (PHL), Hasselt - Belgium The jury s deliberations led to praise for several determining characteristics among the candidates: coherency of proposals and ideas, consideration of ecological, social and economic problems and a high degree of architectural maturity. Four prizes were awarded The 1 st Prize of 3,000 euros. The two joint 2 nd Prizes shared the sum of 2,000 euros. The Jury s Special Mention. All the winning projects will be exhibited in a gallery dedicated to the ARCHIZINC CAMPUS competition on the VMZINC stand in Batimat (Hall 1 - Stand G50). They and the schools in which they study will receive 100 copies of the brochure dedicated to the ARCHIZINC CAMPUS competition in English, French, German and Spanish. * Excluding public swimming pools, bathing establishments, scientific and technical centres or cultural centres. ** Jourda Architects Paris. Entresitio, Spain Cécile LEPOT Journalist ECOLOGIK, France Philippe LOYER Architect Atelier LOYER & BROSSET Architectes, France Patrice TURPIN Urbanist In charge of Sustainable Building department, Cabinet INDDIGO, France STRINGENT EVALUATION CRITERIA Evaluation of the different projects was based on specific criteria: architectural quality, including urban articulation and integration, the way the building relates to the site, design of public spaces and presentation, levels of architectural or technical innovation, especially in the use of rolled zinc, environmental quality, including urban articulation and integration, management of rainwater, bioclimatics, thermal performance of the building and analysis of the pertinence of building products, quality of expression and presentation of elements in the submission. 2

4 1 st PRIZE School Louis HENRY and Boris LEFEVRE ECOLE SPÉCIALE D ARCHITECTURE - ESA - Paris, France M. Carl Fredrik SVENSDEDT EMERGENCY EXIT Waterside resort and aquarium This project presents an interesting approach to the regeneration of this urban environment. The candidates opted for silence with gardens and openings concealed in several excavated spaces. Taking advantage of the plot s slope, the students placed the programme below a mound created with the earth that was dug out and deposited along the ring road. Opening out onto the canal, this discreet layout with a low footprint frees up a large park protected from noise by the mound. The candidates cleverly used the unearthed soil to buttress the volumes and protect their envelopes, creating the impression of a Troglodyte building, while at the same time maintaining visual continuity with the canal. The result is a compact building with very little of its surface in contact with the outside world, with the exception of the zinc-covered volumes protruding from the slope. The jury highlighted the quality of spaces, sources of natural light and variety of volumes. It considered the project to be committed, controlled, wilful and detailed, demonstrating the maturity of the candidates who made a pertinent choice corresponding to the theme of the competition. The design and general organization of this project were dictated by sunshine and prevailing winds.

5 JOINT 2 ND PRIZE Fernando DIEZ VILLANUEVA, Raúl PEREDA AHEDO, Javier BAUCELLS ANTOÑANZAS and Vicente ZETOLA VARGAS School ESCUELA TÉCNICA SUPERIOR DE ARQUITECTURA BIOCLIMÁTICA - ETSAM - Madrid, Spain M. NEILA SPORTS AND LEISURE CENTRE For this sports and leisure complex, the candidates decided on an architectural style combining ecological rationalism and the realities of the programme. The design and general organization of this project were dictated by sunshine and prevailing winds. The project is made up of several buildings based on the same model, arranged in parallel lines perpendicular to the canal. Cross-flow traffic is facilitated by walkways and external corridors covered by a sun-shield in perforated rolled zinc. The zinc roofing is both functional and creative: it re-uses rainwater for sanitation. The Jury was impressed with the simplicity of the infrastructure, the lack of ostentation demonstrated by these candidates and their capacity to define a realistic programme with a discreet layout and a minimalist expression. 6 JOINT 2 nd PRIZE Irène CUERDA School ESCUELA TÉCNICA SUPERIOR DE ARQUITECTURA BIOCLIMÁTICA - ETSAM - Madrid, Spain M. NEILA CULTURE ARTS CENTRE Cultural centre, artists residences and studios This sustainable project is a perfect example of bioclimatics. The buildings are arranged in staggered rows and highlight large plots with water features and gardens ensuring rainwater management and natural ventilation of the site. In summer time, the layout in small buildings facilitates energy management. In winter time, glasshouses enable heat to be stored and ensure thermal comfort in the interiors. In this project, the deliberate simplicity of the architectural style is at work for a highly effective environmental balance sheet! This subtle yet radical approach particularly impressed the jury. 7 JURY S SPECIAL MENTION School Olivier CAUDAL and Laurent TAELMAN ECOLE SPÉCIALE D ARCHITECTURE - ESA - Paris, France M. Carl Fredrik SVENSDEDT BAMBOOST Bamboo grove and hydroponic glasshouses. The candidates developed an original project using bamboo as their main material. This enabled them to design a bamboo grove and a hydroponic glasshouse. The space they created also features a complex housing a restaurant, a market, a creative studio and an exhibition space. The Jury was impressed with the rational the use of bamboo, which is a cost-effective sustainable material. The candidates demonstrated a capacity to invent a unique place. The lightweight, streamlined structure turns into a creative platform as part of the regeneration of this waterside waste land.
